This has always been an issue. There is a specific IP address range you can exclude on your VPN though.I think its 192.168.49.0/24.

Thats happened for ages for me, and its because the headunit needs to connect directly to your phone, which many VPN apps break intentionally.

Always been an issue on wireless AA for most VPNs. Just exclude the Android Auto app or put an exclusion for the IP range mentioned in this thread.

I added an exclusion for android auto in wireguard. This also only happens if you use wireless android auto.
Works for me with Mullvad on GrapheneOS.

I was also taught in elementary school how streets and addresses work. I look at comaps and just remember how to get to the street, then I use my eyes and find the address. I even know which side of the street it will be on because the number tells you that.
As a cyclist and motorcyclist, I will never use my phone in a car that I’m driving. And I despise vehicle that force the drivers to use an iPad to use their vehicle. Maybe take a minute to evaluate what you desire for comfort against what would be best for everyone.
When I’m in an unfamiliar area, Android Auto is super useful. Even in areas I’m familiar with, having some sort of navigation is useful because one way streets and streets that don’t allow turns exist. A paper map is definitely more dangerous in traffic than the one that flashes your directions on your instrument cluster.

Y’all can down vote me all you want but seems a little hypocritical. We’re talking about using Android auto in your car, on a privacy group. It’s not a privacy conscious practice is my point.
Automotive companies love all that data, and collect it, monetize it to data brokers, insurance “risk data brokers” etc. KIA/Hyundai and Nissan are there worst for it!

Anyone that downvotes awareness of the horrors of android auto because they dont understand the risks involved would also probably fail a phishing test or plug in a random usb from the street into their personal PC because “its just a storage device”. It’s sad watching people not understand what theyre willingly doing to themselves and then trying to defend the thing they themselves don’t understand.
Android Auto is only a display for your phone. How is it a privacy risk?
Would you give a stranger your phone so it can read you directions or tell you that you have a text from your mom? What if the stranger read it aloud for you? What if that stranger was hundreds of thousands of people called a company and they were selling that data to their other friends who charge you money for car insurance?
Yes, modern cars are a privacy nightmare. Yes, modern smartphones are a privacy nightmare. But what does Android Auto have to do with any of this? All it does is run a second screen for your phone.

Depends on the client, but wireguard has application exceptions.
Have you tried to split tunnel android auto to bypass the vpn?
I’ll give it a try. I’m a bit surprised it’s needed since the VPN excludes local network connections anyway
Try enabling local/LAN access in the VPN app
plug it in via us when u need to use it. that works even if u have vpn
Yeah, I found this out the other day, it doesn’t matter if you allow just Android Auto through VPN either, seems to be another Google service blocking it.
I’ve had no trouble with setting it up in the exceptions list in the Rethink DNS filtering and VPN app.
