Russia is likely assisting China in training its military personnel, as well as providing Beijing with intelligence and advanced military technology, which could give China an advantage in the event of a potential conflict over Taiwan, according to a report by the Economist (archived).

since 2024, Chinese military personnel have been undergoing training in the use of drones and urban warfare at a Russian military training ground near Volgograd. This facility is regularly used by the Russian Federation’s 8th Army, which is one of Moscow’s key forces in the war against Ukraine on the eastern front.
For China, such cooperation helps compensate for its lack of modern combat experience. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has not participated in major armed conflicts since the brief border war with Vietnam in 1979, so Beijing is seeking to gain practical knowledge of modern methods of warfare.

China has also gained broader access to Russian military technologies that the Kremlin had previously been reluctant to share. U.S. and European officials speculate that this involves, in particular, the development of Chinese air defense and missile defense systems, as well as assistance in building low-noise nuclear submarines.

China is particularly interested in Russia’s experience in the Black Sea, where Moscow is countering Ukrainian maritime drones.
The West is also closely monitoring the two countries’ cooperation in the field of underwater technology. The head of U.S. Naval Intelligence, Rear Admiral Michael Brooks, stated that by 2035, China could have about 80 submarines, half of which will be nuclear-powered. According to him, new models may feature improvements in reactor design, sensor performance, weapons integration, and noise-reduction technologies.

Russia knows a lot of things that don’t work. They also are learning how to use drones.

Since when does Russia have ‘advanced military technology’?
Jokes aside, it makes perfect sense for Russia to aid China in preparation for war. First of all, a global conflict is coming, whether we like it or not, and the ones best equipped and prepared will come out on top. Second, Russia vs Ukraine is quite a similar case to a potential China vs Taiwan.
However, China is very unlikely to attack Taiwan anytime soon. With every year, China’s advantage over Taiwan grows tremendously. Whereas Taiwan’s major protector - the US - is sinking lower and lower at the same time. Why attack now and risk retaliation from the US, even if China could likely destroy it with moderate effort, when you can wait for the US to destroy itself, and then take Taiwan without a fight?
Other than the US, only Japan and South Korea could potentially support Taiwan. Even those three combined have absolutely no chance of winning whatsoever. For South Korea it could end catastrophically if North Korea joined on China’s side.
Then there’s also growing sympathy for China among Taiwanese youth. There are pro-China political parties in Taiwan, and it’s quite likely they’ll score some big wins in the coming years. Perhaps no armed operations will be needed at all for China to effectively control Taiwan.
That is not going to happen. I wish people would stop spreading this propaganda. Taiwan and China military threats go back to the 18th century. It got more real since 1949 when Chiang lost the civil war and he and his government fled to Taiwan.
Anyone who understands Chinese politics, knows there is no appetite to go war in either faction. There is no support from the people as the local economy is going through a transition and unemployment is increasing.
Xi and his predecessors needed to sound tough on Taiwan because this is part of Maoist heritage.
Furthermore militarily, China is far ahead of Russia in regards to weapons, infrastructure and equipment like aircraft carriers. The Chinese army is also much better trained than the Russians, so what could they possibly learn?
