There’s a culture out there of people that love a piece of media so much that they will defend an unfeeling child murdering automaton called a corporation till their dying breath. In a perfect world, these people would be hanged. Thank you New York City good night!!
Some communities are just full of fanboys and it sucks. Deltarune and Korra are some of the worst. Deltarune is just annoying, Korra is just full of fanboys who can’t take any criticism of the show. There’s a lot of shitty criticism of Korra, but the even the correct shit like it being super libbed out, is seeing as completely invalid.
Valve fanboys confuse me the most, and I say this as someone who quite likes my Steam Deck.
But man the way they talk about Valve as if they’re benevolent is so weird. They’re just as greedy as any other company. They get so mad at me when I say that they didn’t have to raise their hardware prices
valve is a parasitic corporation syphoning money from game developers and only hires contractors to keep headcount low. there are cool people there (or they sometimes pay cool people as contractors) who are allowed to do cool stuff but almost on anything else they spectacularly fail because they insist on their garbage corporate governance and no communications.
that being said in order for their hardware division to stay profitable they had to raise prices. valve has absolutely no control on their supply price, i think that’s why people get angry when you say they could go lower. and they can’t make their hardware loss leaders because the platform is open.
i could never afford a steam deck or steam machine either way so the pricing really doesn’t matter to me, but they look cool especially with linux on them. it’s a shame valve is making them.
They intentionally get kids addicted to gambling through lootboxes and by not implementing changes that would stop the 3rd party skins gambling sites(the coffezilla series is quite good for people with any residual good feelings for steam and gabeMcYachtFace)
Valve could absolutely ruin people the same way Sony is ruining people right now with their digital media. I don’t see your point about raising the hardware prices though as pretty much every piece of a PC has pretty much tripled over the last few months.
Valve could absolutely be worse, yes, but that doesn’t make them «good». They could have taken the loss on hardware like console makers used to do, betting they’d more than make up the difference in software sales to those hardware owners.
I didn’t say they were good and I actively think they are deceptive as they are not very forthcoming on a lot of issues that the wider gaming industry is having.
As for your second point, they quite possibly are still taking a loss on the hardware or the markup is extremely thin as at home builds in the equivalent space are pretty close in price. One thing you don’t get is the compact size. I see what you are saying but they also mentioned making the entire box extremely open for tinkering so that doesn’t always come with a guarantee of software sales unlike normal consoles.
Also the way they act like a video game company using a different distribution platform than Steam is unethical and underhanded.
tim sweeny is unethical and underhanded.
or are you seeing people complain about gog and itch.io?
Mostly it’s centered on the Epic Games store. Yeah, Sweeney is scummy, but it’s not like Valve is squeaky clean either. And generally they’re not complaining about it because of Sweeney’s ethics, they’re complaining because a game they want isn’t available in their preferred treat dispenser.
why shouldn’t they complain? it’s another account to make, more security risk, less convenient, worse service, and the exclusivity was usually because of bribery rather than EGS being the publisher. nobody cares that fortnite isn’t on steam, but there’s no discernable reason for borderlands or whatever slop to be exclusive, that’s console shit and everybody who isn’t a fanboy hates it.
it’s perfectly capitalist to pay somebody not to sell their product at other stores, but that’s the kind of shit that makes normal people start hating the business, and that’s what we see with the response to EGS.
Yeah, Valve guys are wild and get so bent out of shape when Valve is called out for its monopolistic business strategy.
Nationalize Steam and turn it into a public utility

GabeN’s 50+ megayachts will be expropriated and repurposed to serve the people as the People’s Yachts.
the thing that is keeping valve a monopoly is all of the competing platforms sucking complete ass. none of the publisher stores, or epic games, or games for windows live are interested in making a good service.
A “fanboy” isn’t a thing you are, it’s a thing you do. People get extremely defensive about their treats, even from the most benign criticism. I think it might have something to do with how empty much of our lives are under capitalism, and how the “tone” has been set by larger corporations to turn enjoyment of a piece of media into cult behavior, that the tendency is universal.
People get entirely too hung up on trying to defend the parent company of the parent company of their treats. I’m allowed to enjoy a video game produced by a studio that has a contract with Microsoft. I don’t need to defend Microsoft and donate my salary to the Bill and Melinda gates foundation just because I want to play Forza…
“you’re complaining about dlc cars costing 5 dollars more in afull priced game? what are you? poor?” actual arguments I’ve seen, boot so god damn deep and they spent 0 seconds chewing on it
Normalize shaming people for not pirating games.
Shaming people for not being able to afford DLC is kind of the culture shift that steered me away from games where i need to interact with other g*mers.
