Hey hi, I’m supervising a 10yo kid in their manga addiction. Cool stuff. I’m looking for references of mangas that could be gateways to other litteratures. For example, Sebastiane Grandelice is a novel with short strips of manga-like exerpts, it influenced them into reading novels. Magus of the library sparked an interest in old books and got us into an old edition of Jules Vernes for a while. Terrarium had them look at other post-apo work all around. Thanks in advance.
Here is what I recommend, keep in mind some of them are for adults, so you will need to check if they are appropriate:
- Junji Ito Frankenstein
- Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo)
- Legend of the Galactic Heroes
- Junji Ito No Longer Human (18+)
- Lovecraft’s Manga Adaptations (Start with At The Mountains of Madness)
- Pride and Prejudice | Jane Austen Manga
- Les Misérables Manga
- The Tale of Genji Manga
- Anne of Green Gables Manga
There is more, just look for novels adapted into manga. If they like the manga they might want to read the original.
Also note that some are for adults, so you would need to check them.

Why not just recommend books directly?
I already do this, thanks, but parental (or identified as such) recommendations are sometimes met with strong opposing forces (that’s an euphemism). And I think that the subtle idea that mangas are connected with everything else, and lead to other medias, is something positive.
