You’ve made a good point. Sometimes, too much automation takes the fun away.

Continuing from last week, I dropped the following series:
The ones most at risk of being dropped are now Zenshu and I Left My A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths!. Let’s see how it goes.
One last thing: Sakamoto Day is slowly failing to live up to the hype for me. I think I’ve been spoilt by the top-tier action comedy of One Punch Man and slice-of-life comedy of Spy x Family.
Captain Corinth: The Galactic Navy Officer Becomes an Adventurer
The foreshadowing is pretty good.
My irl workload continued to be crazy this week. So, that is a contributing factor to the late posting of this thread.
Since these weekly discussion threads tend to follow a standard format, how about scheduling it to be posted at a certain time every week? It can be done for free (and easily in my experience) with cron-job.org.
The only problem I foresee with this approach is when the post body got to be different from usual. In that case, one just has to edit the post body manually like what has been done so far.
Really appreciate this community
not sure too many of my comments would be constructive
Same thing here; I’d rather lurk back on Reddit. The thing is, Lemmy needs more content / participation to attract more users, so until it has reached a critical mass of users, my policy is to keep spewing bullshit. Though I’ve noticed that the more I posts, the easier it gets.
I can’t remember: have Anya and Donovan Desmond interacted before? If they did, were they not able to read each others’ minds?
Why the heck is Yuke, a mage, using a sword instead of a staff / wand? Are Red Mages different from regular mages?
Never mind, apparently they use swords.
Also, we don’t see Rain’s contribution to the fight at all…

This episode’s antagonist is the dumbest and most unrealistic. What’s his exit strategy? Like, you go on a rampage in town - with your identity exposed - and you’re pretty much at least going to jail. The only people who do so are the likes of mass shooters with a death wish and suicide bombers because they don’t expect to live.
Also, Alina doesn’t seem to learn. You’d think she would start wearing a mask after the last episode, but no. Plus, masks are so cool.
Last thoughts: that phrasing😏
All of this happening from the old guy’s perspective before the accident should’ve been in the premiere episode, but they did it at the start of this one instead.
I prefer this format actually, just like in Saga of Tanya the Evil
I noticed that when it’s the conventional way, the anime tend to show how the protagonist’s life sucked (read: protagonist is a loser) before getting isekaied, which is a huge turn-off.
Has there been a superhero who’s successful at keeping their identity a secret? I can’t think of any.
It’s one reason why I liked Tony Stark from The Iron Man movie. If you can’t keep it hidden, you might as well embrace it.
I guess you just want personal recommendations then?
In that case here’s my top 10:
Here are more of my top-rated anime that I can’t fit in my top 10:
Note that I’m partial to:
I agree with both @Unboxious@ani.social and @falidorn@lemmy.world regarding the definition of a must-watch anime. There’s nothing that can please everyone, and yet there are some things everyone should have at least heard of. Hearing of something may be a low bar, but it is the precursor to attempt watching it.
To put it another way, this question is asking for the greatest (read: most popular) of all time for anime.
Wikipedia has lists of GOATs for various media:
Some examples to save you some clicks:
Interestingly, even though we’ve got a list of best-selling manga, we don’t have a list of top anime.
However, there are heuristics - we can reference the list of highest-grossing Japanese films and most popular anime on AniList (or myanimelist, etc)
Some picks are:
I suspect Frieren may join the ranks at some point.
Personally, I have not watch Bleach / Naruto / One Piece and dropped Demon Slayer.
Interesting premise, let’s see if it delivers.
Here are my thoughts after watching it 5 months ago.
Copy-paste:
It’s a change of pace from the usual series, by having the child protagonist not pilot a Gundam. Doing so gave us the perspective of someone who is essentially a civilian / side character. Feels bad for Bernard, but I guess that’s the point: war results in so many needless deaths.
Nothing else much to say. The old art style, animation and music simply can’t compare their modern counterparts, so all it has going for it is its story and characters. Short and interesting enough to get me watching to the end. 7 / 10
Am I being overly harsh (granted it was just my first watch, and some things are a lot better during a 2nd or 3rd watch)?
Not at all.
This is basically a combination of Bofuri, Dungeon Meshi (sans cooking) and World’s Strongest Witch.
a sort of Wizard of Oz vibe, which is how I realized the Wizard of Oz was an isekai
Continuing my status update on currently airing anime from last week:
Even Given the Worthless “Appraiser” Class, I’m Actually the Strongest - There’s nothing setting it apart from the numerous fantasy anime, so there’s no point watching it.
Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective - I gave it one more episode. It annoyed me when other characters are dumb in order to make the protagonist look smart. It also has a few other flaws reminiscent of Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions. In a nutshell, it’s not a very good show, so I’m out.
I’m Getting Married to a Girl I Hate in My Class - I got tired of the main duo’s bakaple (bacouple?) antics halfway through the second episode.
The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World - This is the weakest adaption out of those that I’m familiar with this season. I’m giving it one more episode, but I don’t have high hopes for it.
I Left My A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths! - I have forgotten how much of a power fantasy this one was (and yes, harem and revenge are power fantasies too). I’m going to turn my brain off to this one until I am bored of it, or until it ends.
From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated! - This has the funniest first episode out of all the seasonal isekai anime I am watching. If the comedy keeps up, I will likely be completing it.
I’m Living With a Otaku NEET Kunoichi?! - I’m surprised that I’m still entertained by this show. I will still be watching it till I get bored of it.
I May Be a Guild Receptionist, but I’ll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out on Time - It’s been a decent adaptation so far (of the manga at least; I have not read the novel).
Zenshu - The action scenes are very flashy, which is nice.
SAKAMOTO DAYS - It is looking good and on track to be among my top anime of the season. Having said that, it’s a bit too shounen-y for my taste at the moment. If it remains this way, it would end up being a 9 / 10 for me by the end of the season.
The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 - It’s been a nice first episode, laying the groundwork for the rest of the show. The only disappointing thing for me is the opening song, which doesn’t sound as good as I thought it would. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’d likely binge it towards the end of the season because I dislike being kept in suspense (even though I have already read ahead of the manga).
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You Season 2 - This first episode has been a perfect adaptation. The soundtracks, especially the spoof of Zenzenzense, fit the mood and adds to the humour. I’d like to think that the voice actresses had fun doing their takes on other characters for this episode. IMO the best part is how well the anime adapted the humour to this medium. My only complaint is that the opening and ending songs sound kinda lackluster compared to the ones from the first season, but that’s probably because my expectation was too high. I hope it maintains this level of quality for the rest of the season.
I picked up two cute manga over the past week
Ichigo-chan on Sundays - This is yet another story featuring a gay couple of which one is a crossdressing boy. It’s nothing special, but cute femboys are always a win in my book.
Stepmother’s Guide - This manga features a sweet mother-and-(very young) son relationship.
I’ve just picked up The Main Heroines Are Trying to Kill Me.
It’s alright. It reminds me of Webtoon Character Na Kang Lim, but is more serious instead of comedic.
