  • That's where Australia's right is at right now. In Opposition, not Government, but "full of infighting and unable to do anything whatsoever". Our right has been made up of two separate parties in a permanent coalition for most of Australia's history, but over the past 12 months they've split up and gotten back together twice over infighting. And one of the two parties of the Coalition is ripping itself apart at the seems over the conflict between wanting to present a more moderate front and wanting to embrace the far-right. They recently turfed their leader, a woman (the first time they've had one leading!) from the more moderate faction, and put in a far-righter.

Then there's One Nation, our UKIP/Reform equivalent (replete with toxic, famously racist, controlling leader), which is surging in the polls recently.

The ex-leader of the Liberal Party (the main right-wing party) did the most amazing thing by resigning from Parliament after her party spilled her, forcing the Coalition to fight a by-election where the two Coalition parties will be competing against each other, and against One Nation, and against at least one prominent local independent. It's going to be splendid to watch. I'm desperately hoping Labor doesn't even run a candidate, so we can all just watch the right fight itself.

  • We've had state-based similar systems before, though they have sometimes been unreliable, which is why this system is being rolled out at the federal level.

But I don't think we'll be getting something similar to your amber alerts. The article only describes two levels of alert, one for serious safety threats, and one for a warning that safety threats might be along soon.

  • I really like the idea of donating to a broader consortium, like the NLNet that's suggested already, specifically because they give donations to less consumer-facing elements that might be less likely to attract direct funding.

Other than that though, I'd say donate to the things that (a) you already use a lot, and which (b) seem most in need of funding. If it's big and famous and fairly stable without significant ongoing costs, it's probably not as important to donate to. If it's niche, needs a lot of development to add useful features or polish, or has significant ongoing costs (e.g. servers), that would be a higher priority. Evaluate based on whatever balance of those factors you choose.

  • Exactly. Conservatism is not really very strongly correlated with age, controlled for other factors. But it is correlated with various things that are themselves correlated with age. Like wealth. And family status.

  • voted as tactically as I could

I hope that Reform fizzles out before the next General, but if it doesn't I hope one good thing comes of it, and he sticks to his promise of pushing to move away from FPTP.

  • Don't forget the tan suit!

  • There are a few different things you need to know to get this, so it's hard to blame you.

The first is that there is a prominent and very loud transphobic community of people who cry about "women's sports", where what they really mean is "trans women aren't women and shouldn't be allowed to be in women's spaces", but they couch it in notions of fairness in sport. You know it's not legitimate concern because of how often they've gone after cis women who just happen to look a little too masculine for their misogynistic tastes.

You also need to know that Donald Trump, the US president, has been closely tied to these loud transphobes.

The third thing is that at this year's Winter Olympics, the US teams won both the men's and women's ice hockey competition.

Following that win, Donald Trump called the men's team and invited them to meet him at the White House, after the State of the Union. He derisively joked with them:

And we have to, I must tell you, we're going to have to bring the women's team, you do know that. I do believe I probably would be impeached [if the women's team was not invited].

We know this because one of the men recorded the call and posted the video online. Many of the men were heard laughing in response to Trump's sexist joke. One or two of the men posted after-the-fact that the men should not have reacted like that. Whether it's sincere or face-saving, I'll leave up to the reader.

So we've got Trump, a member of the "protect women's sports" movement, caught vocally deriding successful women athletes. Almost like the "protect women's sports" movement is actually just an "exclude trans women from society" movement.

  • Read the article ffs

they are required to provide a statutory declaration naming the person they believe was driving, or alternatively giving as much information as possible about the location of the vehicle and who had access.

Police told Ngakyunkwokka: “If you don’t do the stat dec [statutory declaration] and name a person, you can be charged”. He was not told that he had to complete the statement even if he could not nominate the driver.

The police lied to him about what he needed to do. He acted on the advice they gave him.

Your hypothetical is both irrelevant and not correct, based on the information in the article that you refuse to actually read.

You are not smarter or more knowledgeable in the law than a district court judge.

  • Yeah, his direction was already obvious by then if you were paying attention, with his abuse of Twitter to defraud investors, or his Hyperloop bullshit to stall public transport investment. But sticking his arse where it wasn't wanted, reacting like a complete manbaby when called out for his attention-seeking, projecting hard onto the actual hero, hiring someone to stalk said hero and try to dig up dirt, and finally perjuring himself in court to avoid losing a defamation lawsuit…that's an absolute final straw. Supporting him after that is inexcusable.

  • Relevant passages:

There are two levels of alert. The “critical” warning for imminent threat to life, like when a cyclone is about to hit, sounds an alarm and triggers a message on a phone’s home screen. These warnings are compulsory and cannot be turned off.

“Priority” alerts are issued when there is not an immediate threat to life but when people are advised to follow instructions before an approaching emergency, like a bushfire designated at the “watch and act” level. Phones can be set to opt out of priority alerts.

Prior to the national test on July 27, an alert will be sent to nine locations in June, including Majura in the ACT, Launceston in Tasmania, Port Douglas in Queensland, Liverpool in NSW, Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, Geelong in Victoria, Goomalling in Western Australia, Port Lincoln in South Australia and Queanbeyan in NSW.

The test message will read: “This is a TEST alert of AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system. NO ACTION IS REQUIRED. In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe. Visit www.ausalert.gov.au for more information. This message is authorised by the Australian Government.”

  • The police should themselves be charged over this. If they aren't, they can continue stifling free expression and create a chilling effect. It doesn't matter if their victim ends up criminally charged, even the threat and the disruption to their business or daily life is enough.

  • So you just ignored this part?

he usually left the keys on the wall of his home and that the car was accessible to more than 20 extended family members.

And the fact that the magistrate was displaying very obvious bias and behaving illegally by preventing the justice process from playing out properly? And that the police failed to adequately explain his rights, and charged him on the basis that he had not exercised them correctly?

The evidence was exceptionally weak, and justice clearly was not done in the first instance.

  • Yeah, those stickers only work if it's older than the Thai caving incident, IMO.

  • Relevant username, I guess.

  • Hells yeah!

  • You both got a prefect score, which is better than me.
