  • I thought this was an anti-joke until I read your comment. :D

  • Damn, this looks good! This is a huge coincidence: just a few days ago, I was hoping that something like this existed when another thread reminded me of Unreal 2's long-dead multiplayer mode.

  • Crazy how Microsoft spent the GDP of a decent sized country on acquiring game developers to bolster Xbox, then gave that strategy about 25 months to actually work before deciding "nevermind, pivot to AI then sell it for parts."

  • ^ yes, that. It's just the character animations, I'm not saying the entire game is running at a low framerate. That would not look good.

  • This is the first I'm hearing of it, looks interesting. Also I love how a lot of developers have suddenly realized that a lower framerate in 2D games makes them look amazing. Especially when it gives some old fashioned animation principles to a very modern looking game.

  • #6 looks like the first known use of the AWOOOOGAAAA eyes.

  • If there is one, I worry that it won't possibly be able to keep up. Youtube is actively encouraging AI generated content now.

Unfortunately, I think a whitelist is the only option here. Subscribe to specific accounts that you know are legitimate, and use some kind of desktop app for Youtube instead of browsing the site, so you don't get AI generated recommendations after the video.

I ended up subscribing to Nebula.tv last week, hoping to avoid youtube altogether. It's definitely missing a few categories of content (in fact it's mainly video essays and LegalEagle), but that'll be my starting place for videos from now on.

  • Nice! This is also the first I've heard about this game. Looks cool. I love the idea of playing games made for Linux on these handhelds, instead of just emulated games.

  • Ideas are then further refined when you try to articulate them. [...] It’s the work that matters.

Yes! This post hits the nail on the head.

There's a certain conversation that I'm sure you've had if you knew how to code between 2008 and 2015, right in the middle of the smartphone app "gold rush." It's when a person would approach you and say, "Oh, you can code? Sick! I've got this million dollar idea for an app. Bro, if you write the code for it, I'll split the profits with you, 50/50.* You in?"

This person was wrong about a couple of things:

    1. Their million dollar idea is not nearly as well thought out as they believed it to be.
    2. A million dollar idea is not actually worth a million dollars. It's not even worth $500,000 (y'know, with their generous 50/50 split).

This type of person tends to think in incredibly abstract terms. They're always talking about things at a very high level, likely because they don't actually know how to do things at the implementation level. So they don't understand (or are willfully ignorant) of the fact that the real value of an idea is in it's implementation. The costs, and the payoff, come when you have people actually building something.

But it's not just the monetary value that lies there; that's also where real discoveries happen. The growth in that field of knowledge, and your growth as a person, happen when you actually do the damn thing. The benefit of actually building something yourself is not just in the thing you built, but that you learned and grew while doing it.

And now, with AI, that mentally undercooked "idea man" will get to go through life believing that his abstract, vague ideas really are a gift to the world by themself; no other skills necessary. Even if some of them do end up being valuable in a dollar amount, the personal growth just will not happen.

Also they would usually try to offer you more like 10%.

  • The thing that works for me is allowing the pan to heat up quite a bit before pouring the eggs in. I mean, not searing hot, but you want it to make a little "tssssh" noise when you pour in the eggs. Allowing them to sit and cook a little bit before you stir seems to help, too.

That's also why I don't really scramble them very aggressively. The bottom layer needs to sit on the pan and cook, becoming a little solid, before I move them. When I do it that way, they don't stick. It ends up being kind of like an omelette that I frequently ruffled up and then flipped at the end, rather than really scrambled.

  • Scrambled if you're making a lot of them, or Spanish fried if you're just making a couple. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jQD6S6v4TyU

Please remember that I gave you this helpful advice when you commence your invasion of our planet.

  • Yes, qwerty and Dvorak, although I have to guess and check with some special characters on Dvorak. I have an unlabeled Dvorak keyboard at work (this guy right here), but I only physically go in to the office once every few weeks nowadays, and I'm starting to forget where some of the symbols are.

  • I forgot that song was in it. Ok, now I have to watch it again.

  • I remember wanting to watch this at some point, but I think I got it confused with The Orville. I should check it out again.

    1. Big Fan, a movie about an obsessive football fan, starring Patton Oswalt. I only saw it once, when it first came out (2009), but remember thinking that it was really good. A very prescient, dark comedy about a certain type of guy that is very relevant today. It made $230,000 in theaters according to Wikipedia.
    2. Unreal 2, and specifically just the multiplayer. Unreal 2 was a pretty disappointing sequel, and it didn't even have multiplayer when it came out. A year after its launch, they released a multiplayer addon and it was amazing. Completely overshadowed by Unreal Tournament 2004, never really had a chance of becoming popular, but it had a dedicated fan base for a while. You can get it for free now; I want to get a group together at some point.
  • I don't think it's as good as it used to be. It got acquired by Gamespot, then Gamespot was acquired by a few different private equity firms, so of course there were layoffs across all of their sites, and Gerstmann was one of them.

  • The MS-DOS version of Rayman was the best one. All of the console versions had to cut various things from it. Lower resolution sprites, removing layers from the soundtrack, etc. The Sega Saturn was probably the closest to the MS-DOS version, and that one isn't included in this edition.

I'm not really sure if this new $20 edition is worth it. You can get the MS-DOS version, plus the bonus levels mentioned in the blog post, for $1.50 right now. https://www.gog.com/en/game/rayman_forever
