  • Yep. Cowboy coffee is Turkish brew. The only difference is a lack of any extra implements and it's usually done in a big camp kettle or pot. The grind isn't that fine either. But for all intents and purposes, the method is the same. Greek coffee is also very similar.

I'm also a big fan of boiling more tea than normal to get a strong flavour lol. But usually out camping, I'll have my coffee grind and just tea bags because they're much easier Always double bag it 😁 Big peppermint fan, but also like a lot of smooth and flowery blends. Like the opposite of the coffee, I guess—cover all bases.

  • Bloom is the period that the coffee floats and foams out bubbles, because the heat is expelling the CO2 (and other gases) from the grind. Once it's out, bloom is over, the foam/bubbles settle, and the coffee sinks down to the bottom having no gases to float with anymore. During bloom, most of the flavour is being released from the grind. Think of it like the coffee is "opened up" or blooming.

Because there's no way to pull out the grind in cowboy coffee, bloom just goes until msx, making strong flavour. But, that's where pulling it off heat early or adding cold water can control bloom time to weaken the hit. Personally, I just max it out and dilute it in the cup if it's too strong, but I like strong flavour coffee.

  • Cowboy coffee is delicious if you do it right.

    1. Fine grind
    2. Get the water boiling so it's rolling
    3. Add grind. The rolling helps keep the foam and spillage down as CO2 escapes, but feel free to agitate with a spoon to help.
    4. Bring off heat after a minute and let bloom finish. All CO2 out, grind sinks and settles.
    5. Leave it resting for another 3-5 mins after bloom is done.

Some people like to add cold water, I don't. Really depends what you like and there's a few ways to go about it, but basic concept stays the same. Boil, bloom, rest.

I make coffee in the middle of Bumfuck Nowhere a lot lol. A fire, tin, and water is the only coffee machine you need when done right 👍

  • What's with authoritarian world leaders having the tackiest taste in decor?

Like, they manage to make expensive things look cheap and nasty. I know the things in this picture are not, but the whole vibe is falling so far short of what it's going for, it actually goes in the opposite direction. It's nasty.

  • Yeah. But if they did, they'd best surprise us with a 7 day countdown appearing or something, so everyone has time to replay Episode 2 to remember wtf was going on.

It wouldn't really be something you could enjoy by watching a recap video. And everyone under the age of like 25 wouldn't know wtf is going on without a recap video of ar HL1/Opposing Force/Blueshift/Decay mashup into HL2 and episodes recap. "Ooooooh, so that's what Half-Life is and where we're at."

A new title would be most likely, for new generations to start with.

Then they too can get hooked and wait two decades for more.

  • I'd do my job for free for a few days just to help people out (which I like doing) and there's parts of it I enjoy.

But I like paddling down the river much more.

For most people, a paycheck is a business financially compensating them for the time lost and the effort done. The business is of no value to the employee otherwise. The compensation must be fair and worth their while, else the business will have to find someone worth what they're willing to offer in compensation.

  • Yep. Being able to cycle into and around town is something you look forward to and enjoy. Driving into and around town is something you dread and plan.

I've lived inner city in two large cities and cycling or train is an absolute pleasure, as is longboarding. Needing to go a few blocks down or across city is a treat.

My favourite parts are either just having a cruise and still being way faster than a car. Or going for PBs on all the Strava challenges people set up around the cities bike lanes.

Get a light MTB off Marketplace or something, throw on commuter tyres, chuck on panniers, 😙👌

Edit: Oh, and seeing something you like and just deciding to stop lol.

"I think I wanna go over here."

"I might go check this out."

"I think I'll stop in here for a beer."

No parking, no walking blocks, no crawling. Just cruising freely.

  • "Why should I pay for their burning down house?! Privatise the fire department!"

  • There's just a lot of thought put in for the user. Excellent UI and productivity features, so much customisability. It's super fast and light. Then there's built in blockers, VPN, all the usual. To top it all off, it's made by a small group of Norwegians that hate corporate control and love an open and free internet. They even have their own fediverse instances.

After I had spent an hour going down the rabbit hole of tweaking every UI element so the browser was now my browser, I was hooked. I still have to use Firefox at work, but I now find it intrusive, sluggish, and crude. I also hate having to restart it for updates lol.

  • I prefer Edge over Chrome, and if I had to choose one, Edge is definitely better. But gladly I don't have to choose one and never will. Been with Vivaldi for years after switching off FF.

  • The only thing unexpected is the numbers are smaller than anticipated. But these things tend to accelerate as they grow, not remain linear or plateau.

  • That's a thing and people.do, especially apartment dwellers. Dogs learn it quick too.

It's just no one would have an animal shit in a box in the house unless they absolutely had to.

    Oh...

  • In case anyone's wondering, scytale's ad blocker.

  • Yeah but they don't have the money to introduce quality governance into this. So the brain trust of Reddit it is. Which explains why LLMs have gotten all weirdly socially combative too; like two neckbeards having at it—Google skill vs Google skill—is a rich source of A+++ knowledge and social behaviour.

  • Yep. Did this recently actually lol.

But also commonly known as a war thing, done to render the enemy's land infertile. Can't grow food for a while and stuff.

Neither of these things really make much sense in context, though.

  • All I can guess is our farmers haven't been given any initiative to sell to a middle man (store) that marks up. In essence, a farmer's market is supposed to be like going directly to the manufacturer and telling the retailer to fuck off. The farmer is happy, I'm happy, it works.

If your farmer's markets are expensive, I'm guessing it may be novelty or hobbiest produce out to make a quick buck of a trend.

  • Yeah. I don't have large space, but grow my winter and my summer vegetables, then obviously herbs. Plenty for two people. All I need to do is get meat.

Literally about to have a meal now and it'll be eggs benedict on toast with spinach and mushrooms. Only thing not from the yard or friends is the bread.

Or I could go down the road and get the same meal, shittier, for $20.

Edit: Didn't even use the bread. Decided to go omlette. But I did slot some sliced ham in there which was also store bought.

  • Yeah I know. It's the same with beers too. But you gotta find the places and directly order them or ask a distributor in the country to grab them. It's not something you can just grab from the shelf at the local store like other whisky countries.

  • I feel like you're kind of proving my point here. Looking at the dollars and sales.

So what percentage of that was the really good whiskey distilleries most people haven't even heard of vs the big ones that supply the world with the novelty of American whiskey?
