  • I'm honestly not sure if there's much of a difference at this point. Trump's approval has been below 50% since a few weeks after he took office. His net approval has been negative since March. Even the net approval on his most favorable substantive issue (immigration) has been negative since June (Source). If there really was a difference between Trump's approval and that of his administration, I don't understand what that would even mean.

  • Totally. I'm an introvert, and when my phone rings, I pick it up with no problem. I also immediately put it down again with no problem. Works really well, except when people decide to let it ring for what feels like eternity.

  • Having fun/fucking around with something is often a great way to learn about it. Follow your curiosity and see where it leads you.

  • No IGNISU

  • Thanks, man, that's kind of you to say.

  • I'm reading this in Ralph Wiggum's voice, like the car version of "my cats breath smells like cat food!".

  • Also relative to (not around) the sun. The full rotation the earth does in a day is relative to the position of the sun. The absolute amount of rotation is different.

  • In one of my classes, when ChatGPT was still new, I once handed out homework assignments related to programming. Multiple students handed in code that obviously came from ChatGPT (too clean a style, too general for the simple tasks that they were required to do).

Decided to bring one of the most egregious cases to class to discuss, because several people handed in something similar, so at least someone should be able to explain how the code works, right? Nobody could, so we went through it and made sense of it together. The code was also nonfunctional, so we looked at why it failed, too. I then gave them the talk about how their time in university is likely the only time in their lives when they can fully commit themselves to learning, and where each class is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn something in a way that they will never be able to experience again after they graduate (plus some stuff about fairness) and how they are depriving themselves of these opportunities by using AI in this way.

This seemed to get through, and we then established some ground rules that all students seemed to stick with throughout the rest of the class. I now have an AI policy that explains what kind of AI use I consider acceptable and unacceptable. Doesn't solve the problem completely, but I haven't had any really egregious cases since then. Most students listen once they understand it's really about them and their own "becoming" professional and a more fully developed person.

  • Or maybe a stew that induces visual deprivation for a time period of 1 full rotation of the earth relative to the sun?

  • Would be funny if the AI was also burning computational resources while doing this so as to make the lie more convincing.

  • In terms of pure, artificial language generation, this is actually impressive. In terms of the actual utility of AI as a supposed problem-solving tool? Not so much.

  • Based on the overall frequency of people from Southeast Asia vs. the US on Lemmy, my guess is still going to be "US" when people tell me about 3+ lanes on municipal roads, even though I am of course aware that such roads exist in other countries (including my own).

  • I think this is also a psychological effect. Back in gym class, our teachers used to tell us that slower runners should pair up with fast runners for the 100m dash, because running behind someone pushes you to run faster. The same happens in traffic, where simply driving behind another car makes some drivers want to overtake it, even if they're not actually going faster. I also observe this effect when I cycle to work and feel the same urge when I'm behind someone else, until I remind myself that, sure I can push myself briefly to go faster, but do I actually want to maintain that speed afterwards? My usual answer is "no".
