  • if the "one other thing" is beans, and you are a small person with modest caloric needs, you could actually do this in my area. but you need to be able to cook and refrigerate the fresh foods. (plus as the OP says, nearly $300/mo/person on food isn't actually that small of a budget)

    6.18 3lbs chicken thighs (1lb per day = 800 kcal) 2.79 30x corn tortillas (10 per day = 500 kcal) 3.00 1lb broccoli (entire lb per day = 150 kcal) 1.50 can of black beans (1.5 can per day = 630 kcal)

    2.06+0.97+3.00+2.25 = TOTAL $8.28, 2080 kcal

leaves enough room to maybe involve some oil or seasoning occasionally, or dial up the beans or tortillas for more calories. Still a joke of a proposal I just enjoyed doing the math.

  • Yeah. My thing is: if your event's security or proceedings can be disrupted by a flipper, which at least in default form has relatively limited capabilities, you should probably focus on fixing those low hanging fruit issues over banning it, which is unlikely to be 100% successful

  • it's a nitpick but they're right, that's a stupid way to make that sort of list, and there is little practical purpose to banning those specific items, especially the raspberry pi.

The little dig (I have to hope it was intended as a dig) about bringing on harris campaign staff also was funny

  • Sorry this hasn't gotten more engagement. My life got busy as fuck but I'll be back on the audio version grind soon hopefully

  • Story that I don't think was covered here: the sinking of russian cargo ship Ursa Major, which is now a year later being alleged by a spanish newspaper to have been carrying nuclear reactors to DPRK for their nuclear submarine program (which I didn't know was a thing tbh), and report from inspecting the wreckage indicating it was sunk by "external explosions" (they are claiming the holes in the ship were consistent with supercavitating torpedos)

  • contains dairy, typically? so I guess the cw is for animal products

  • cursed

  • down an engine doesn't usually mean "engine ripped off the airframe" it just means it's damaged or not running

  • yeah its a known viewing area for spacex launches. I mean the article isn't 100% clear but contextually it seems like its the bit of beach right there where the rio grande meets the gulf. I bet someone got annoyed with people going to mexico to watch DoD spacex launches or something

  • they do this thing where even if the car was stolen, or other circumstances where the owner bears no fault, it often just gets taken to the same impound lot with all other towed vehicles, where it starts accumulating storage fees for every day it sits there.

  • again, you shouldn't just dehumanize people because you've projected americanism onto all annoying or antisocial behaviors. I mean fine, it feels good to rant on the internet, you do you, but I think it sucks.

  • And an SRA one!

    The combo is really something.

Burger americans: get to know your comrades, know your orgs, do not fucking organize with fascists like this. They are out there

  • famously americans are the only ones who ever exhibit annoying behaviors like playing music out loud on the bus/train.

  • there were a few comments in there about not masking or relaxing their masking practices majorly, which when I read them last night were sitting there undisputed. But yeah, there's a tendency to only see the bad, not the overall positive community consensus that's been cultivated on this site.

  • hot take but people who are annoying are still people

  • I think the assurance only feels needed for that exact reason, many people do not have any IRL community that is covid-aware.

I feel very lucky to have almost half my IRL sphere be on their shit about masking. I don't know if I would still be masking if they weren't, just to be frank.

I think we should do more to combat the relaxed liberal attitudes slipping in around masking in that thread like "I'll only do it when I'm sick/in flu season". I can understand the fatalism that produces those desires, but they probably shouldn't be allowed here, or at least should be strongly disputed.
