  • yeah I've run into that with vpn, tor, etc for years. They definitely use some uh, novel anti-abuse techniques

  • they don't want to lose their cushy do-nothing pig job? idk. Its not crazy cushy but compared to ridehail apps or retail it is. These are just absences but I'm surprised people quitting isn't higher, especially considering they don't get any sort of bonus that I know of for staying through the shutdown, just regular back pay

  • the younger zoomers are still in high school but the middle section of them are prime military recruiting age which I think is the point of the meme

  • The headline writer took some liberties with the numbers lmao sounds like they tripled

Statistics obtained from Transportation Security Administration officials show the nationwide callout rate — unscheduled absences by frontline officers — has risen to an average of 6% during the shutdown, compared with about 2% before government funding lapsed.

Several days saw significantly higher national absence rates. The highest nationwide rate reached 9% on Feb. 23, followed by 8% on March 6 and 7% on March 9, according to the internal data.

  • COMRADE! GREAT NEWS! the zine-arranger tool you already linked has this capability already tucked away in the advanced options

I was looking at the code to see if I could hack it in there and realized it was already an option. Set "custom signature size" to however many sheets of paper per section you want. I'm using it locally rn! (as described in this comment)

I'm totally going to use this in the future for amateur bookbinding, so thank you for bringing this tool to my attention! Shit I might even give the author money, this is an EXCELLENT tool!

  • I should add, the tool you linked in your other comment is, for all intents and purposes, an offline tool! It is all running in your browser to begin with, so if you want permanent access to it, just go to the author's codeberg and download/extract the zip: https://codeberg.org/nashhigh/zine-arranger/archive/main.zip and then just open index.html in your browser to use it 100% offline

Edit: also, splitting the pdf into multiple sections can be done with a variety of CLI tools (or presumably other gui tools more manually). the only one that seems to have it out of the box is paid software (cpdf) but with extra steps it could be done with pdfjam or pdftk or others I think.

  • splitting the PDFs and then using the tool you linked in your other comment may be the easiest.

I've done this sort of thing before but I just used libreoffice (which was a headache sometimes but did work out eventually, and supports printing multiple pages on each sheet ootb) and something like this: https://gist.github.com/UnrulyJuli3/0881f7b5ac0cba5329de580692ce1d69 to generate the order of the pages to print (which I could then paste into libreoffice's print dialog)

  • There might be multiple levels of login-wall but every time I try, the login wall is just a little popup and the video/image actually loads in the background, so it's no problem for yt-dlp. They have rate limiting and stuff that makes downloading a whole profile harder/slower but its not a hard block

  • I've heard good things about AstroVials, and it's EU based so shouldn't be any shipping woes

  • I mean there are a million situations that would call for a specific, non-individual bedtime for practical reasons, and having someone informed to make that call and help everyone actually get well rested for the morning's action is useful.

But its only used as a knee jerk reaction because it infantilizes our anarchist comrades so... That sucks

  • That loses quality, and to my knowledge social media platforms do not embed telemetry into the video streams downloaded by tools like yt-dlp (would be expensive for the platforms, easy to detect if they did, and for most sites yt-dlp doesn't require a login to work)

  • YTDLnis works great on android. Its not on google play but its on F-droid (app store for open source apps( and others

  • The US built 150 Aircraft Carriers in 3 years of WW2

I was a bit confused by this so I did a little research and it turns out there was a smaller class of carrier, escort carriers, which constituted the vast majority of this number. Some were made from adapted commercial ship hulls, and they carried in the low dozens of aircraft.

This isn't to take anything away from America's deindustrialization however. Its pretty hard to repurpose commercial or merchant marine ships if you don't have domestic production capacity for those either...

  • Its unfortunate they resorted to DDoS, it just Streisand-effect'ed the whole affair which few would have otherwise seen or cared about.

I can get wanting to protect your identity, the blog post was just like, almost publicly stalking them for no reason, kinda snitch behavior considering the context and many legal threats, but clearly their response backfired.

  • Good way to bypass the Sremovedhorpe problem is to make a post instead of a comment. Slur filter isn't applied to the URL field on posts. Then you could just link the post here. Or use an archive site or smth I guess

  • Sailfish OS seemed to be the most promising on this front in terms of "it just works" android integration but I have no idea what phone would be the best to use with it these days. I also don't think its 100% open source?

Also obviously there is an extent to which running an android VM is just bringing a lot of the same privacy issues with you

  • is it out or just the substack thingies? It looks good but I kinda would rather read it on paper

  • Hellworld? or something else?
