  • there were a few comments in there about not masking or relaxing their masking practices majorly, which when I read them last night were sitting there undisputed. But yeah, there's a tendency to only see the bad, not the overall positive community consensus that's been cultivated on this site.

  • hot take but people who are annoying are still people

  • I think the assurance only feels needed for that exact reason, many people do not have any IRL community that is covid-aware.

I feel very lucky to have almost half my IRL sphere be on their shit about masking. I don't know if I would still be masking if they weren't, just to be frank.

I think we should do more to combat the relaxed liberal attitudes slipping in around masking in that thread like "I'll only do it when I'm sick/in flu season". I can understand the fatalism that produces those desires, but they probably shouldn't be allowed here, or at least should be strongly disputed.

  • Worth the read, thank you!

Its easy to be hopeless in the US and want to aim low, for "achievable" goals, but ultimately I think this is the correct take.

  • but is the state not also to some extent at the mercy of the bond market? obviously they have more options though.

  • Very true. That would help. Maybe Mamdani will be better, though honestly I'm not confident in that.

  • Yet another layer of structures to enforce capitalist realism and push austerity. Genuinely not sure how you push through all this besides just like, gaining absolute power and doing Socialism in One City which obviously isn't super viable.

  • This chapter underlined for me something that I first started thinking while reading the jakarta method: Do not under any circumstances try to effect positive incremental change from the inside of the imperial government.

At best your efforts will be wasted, but in many cases, you will actually strengthen the imperial machine in unpredictable ways, and enable it to commit even greater atrocities, as happens with the FDR admin's reformers here, and the more sympathetic ambassador in Indonesia in the jakarta method.

  • honestly, browsing libgen and/or annas archive, then getting the actual file from the source torrent is workable and reliable, but it takes probably an extra 60 seconds (or more if you don't have a torrent client already)

  • It is specifically not supposed to be for opsec, there was a whole struggle session about this years ago where people were arguing we shouldn't mandate pronoun tags and I think at the time the account creator made you pick, but when we federated it went back to just having a default value.

I think we should have none/use name, but change the default to they/them to piss off transphobes, make people explicitly go in and change it to none/use name if they want that.

  • yeah for sure. Audiobooks are weird there isn't really a standard format besides just a bunch of audio files in a zip file. So maybe mega link for that plus a combined upload somewhere

  • ah

the right size masonry bit, screws, and plastic sleeve anchors to grip the hole in the brick might do it, but the metal style anchors are much stronger if you're worried about it coming loose. either beefy masonry screw anchors or the expanding metal sleeve kind

  • ah fuck

  • if you don't do it right it can be hard to solidly screw into masonry.

If your new place has solid wood to screw into I wouldn't worry about it much.

  • I'm wondering what USU's angle is tbh. Some of their writing seems good but other articles are pretty bad.

  • I more meant whether "any chapter discussed so far" included the current one, which people are ostensibly just starting on today? But I understand contextually that your comments are regarding chapter 3 so its clearer to me now.

  • depends what the object is really. If its just a clog of the usual suspects (hair and other small/soft debris) then a drain snake is probably the best option. it can't be too big if it made it down the drain in the first place (assuming your drain has a grate or some way of preventing large objects from falling into the pipe. I'd be shocked if it didn't.) Maybe post on local groups and try to find a kind handy person to help you out? you don't have to be a plumber to unclog a drain generally.

If you have a plunger you could try that too
