  • Not everyone's thing, but there are pre-90s shmups that are ok...

Here are some games I've played

    • Scramble
    • Xevious
    • Stinger
    • Liquid Kids (excellent)
    • NewZealand Story (excellent)
    • Rastan
    • Omega Fighter
    • Growl
    • Darius I / II
    • Gradius
    • X-Multiply
    • Contra
    • TwinBee
  • After seeing comments here on patientgamers I was reminded that I wanted to play Yoku's Island Express. So I did. 97% complete. Not sure what's left to do but I'll figure it out.

Also around half-way through Pepper Grinder so I'll be working on that for a couple evenings.

  • At one point I had an FTP server, a website, a gemini capsule, home cinema and torrent running on a cluster.

Not I just have my home cinema and a torrent server.

  • Didn't even need to click to know which network agreed...

  • Same, only played local but I got the game for something like $13 CAD.

I did have the internet connection module, but not for playing online.

I picked up both items in order to use Phoenix to play pirated game but ended up liking PSO.

  • Back in the Nintendo era we picked up a copy of Final Fantasy I when the local rental shop went out of business... The battery in it was 100% dead. So my brother would just leave the Nintendo on.

I don't think I've had a console affected by this though.

Recently I had an Evercade cart die. It was the flash memory that gave up, though. Not the battery.

  • Hi. I too have found myself asking questions like this when I had phones that had custom ROMs.

tell me what Graphene has stronger?

When I looked into this, I found that Graphene is hardened and is more secure while other ROMs spec into the privacy aspect only.

I still keep my list even though my current device/chipset is not supported by these ROMs.

    Alternative/Custom ROMS

In no particular order, these ROMs usually change the UX/UI and maybe add some security enhancements.

    Privacy|Hardened ROMS

Security-wise, LineageOS is a start but (correct me if I am wrong) you need to unlock the bootloader, which is not great. These ROMs purport heightened privacy or "hardened" security.

    • iodéOS: "deGoogled" LineageOS fork, uses lots of blacklists for ad- and tracker-blocking. Sells pre-installed devices.
    • /e/OS: A "deGoogled" Android experience. Uses microG, no telemetry sent to Google, modified NTP and DNS servers, modified GPS service. Uses the "App Lounge" which combines the Aurora Store with F-Droid and PWAs. Has a tracker blocker. Requires you to have an @murena.io account for some functionalities.
    • GrapheneOS: Private, secure, hardened... has a long list of features. Updates are fast, exploitations are quickly mitigated, non-profit. But, Pixel-only.
    • CalyxOS: PAUSED
    • DivestOS
  • Anything under 3 is the swimsuit ending :)

  • Probably winter 91 or spring 92. Not sure when, but I saw the ads on TV and I needed to get Metroid II: Return of Samus.

    I was 7.

I asked. I begged. And for Christmas or a birthday it came.

Every day when I came home from school, I played. Sometimes I took it with me and played at lunch.

Nobody else played that game. Nobody knew what I was talking about. I took the booklet with me and tried to draw the creatures.

I was stuck at one point. It lasted weeks. Maybe longer. One night before dinner I made some progress. My mother actually let me keep playing until I got to a save point.

Whatever feeling I had at that moment, I'm not sure I'll find it again, but my expression must have been enough. I made it to the save point.

Eventually I beat the game but I'd look forward to getting home to try and speedrun it 100% And eventually I could consistantly beat it under 3 hours with 100% items. I haven't had a game since that I've enjoyed as much except maybe a few shmups.

  • I felt the same way, then I was asked to set one up for someone because we bought it as a group gift. It was so comfortable to use and not at all what I expected. It wasn't even a great one, just a basic Kobo model. I ended up buying the same model and used it for years. My partner got me a new one and she has my original that still works like day one 14 years ago.

  • Beautiful!

  • I don't know. I use mpv because I switched to Linux in 2006 and I'm used to it now.

  • I did! I see it on my students' screens in December. There is some other software that does little things like that. Pale Moon does something for Halloween I believe. I hardly ever watch videos on my computer though.

  • I was team mpc until about 2006, now I'm team mpv.

I still can't remember why I disliked VLC, I think the first time I used it the video would not work but it played with mplayer.

Still good to have VLC around though, glad to see them stickin' around all these years.

  • Cool !

  • Most any criticism of the show is true. I will say that it is a good series to watch with people who haven't watched Star Trek before because it is a little un-Trek-ish and there is less to stop and explain. Also, since the mission is top secret it has little overlap with anything except SNW.

As a Star Trek fan, I was happy to get more Trek, the same as I was happy to get more Picard (that S2 was a pain though!), Lower Decks, Prodigy, and even the Short Treks.

My wife was pulled into the world of Star Trek by Discovery (a full 36 years after I'd started watching the franchise) and now she loves it and wants to watch all of the other series. So, Discovery gets a point for that.

(I haven't seen Section 31 yet. It is supposed to be very bad.)

  • True. I guess the tone wilm depend on my mood that day haha.
