Thanks for the whole bit, he wrote it much better than I ever could and in a way that makes it simple to understand. The mark of a good writer, which from what I understand he was. Okay I need to check out more of his stuff.

News@lemmy.world•Trump fires all commissioners of federal election agency
1·11 hours agoUnfortunately but least you have a good mindset while things are pearshaped in their current way. It feels like that lately even in Canada (for world situation). Like who the hell lets a leader stay in after starting a war and losing it? Seriously, that’s balls. Let alone losing all soft power the country had. You’d almost think he was working for a select few…
I hope things improve one day, but world order is definitely not the same now. Perhaps for the better but things were calmer before is all.
Heh like a bit from Dune, people got too soft, ended up the fremen were enough to let Paul be emperor and change everything by becoming ruler. The philosophy from that story really shows for it anyways. Power doesn’t necessarily corrupt, it attracts those who are corruptable to do what they want. Huh, I just typed it differently and understood what the author meant. Neat cause it’s way more accurate. Also hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, no one that wants to be president should ever be given the position. Same idea, different stories but works still.
Maybe one of the things he comes back in x years going, I loved those books! (After not reading for years) Mean one can hope but you least tried give a good gift. All things I’ve heard is he’s an amusing author though don’t know much beyond what I’ve seen comments on, oh plus Good Omens but only saw season 1 which was based on some of his work, listened to the audiobook too that was a good one. But I enjoy the premise of angels and such.
Okay maybe I missed the Terry Prachett quote, but he wrote (paraphrasing) basically buying an awesome pair of boots that last takes decent coin, the people who need boots to last that long can never afford them so pay more for multiple cheap ones. Again paraphrased, but maybe it’ll encourage more people to read him, think I read a few years ago but anytime anyone quotes him sounds worthwhile.
If this was said, I apologize, sort of quickly scrolled to check so may have missed. But seriously why do we make things so expensive to be less well off? Sounds downright stupid, unless you’re making the dough I imagine. We should be making sure people can live comfortably especially with multiple jobs (though again not my preferred outcome, why should anyone need to work more than one full time job anyway?)
I just wish people could be comfortable with a single job even as a single parent if they need or would like to raise a kid. Though also think we’re a tad overpopulated but that’s not this discussion and still think if we allow it as a society then it should be possible as a single parent.
I am no kids person for the record, dated some mothers over the years but currently a dink (dual income no kids) more an 80s term.
I wouldn’t let out that weight if I thought of it but for sure (not that it’s much but gotta conserve that mass). Besides must be a way if there’s no remote right? Hopefully. Maybe the sign was for hope so they could laugh more.
But I don’t know much about hot air balloons except hearing them fire up for hot air close to one place I lived was kinda neat to see them around though. And obviously what makes them go up…I’d end up in a power line I assume.
For anything else yes I’d do my best to show my best to show my displeasure of the situation for sure.

12·2 days agoYeah that’s for countries that don’t respect democracy, not… Oh nevermind.
I’m not sure the last time I saw the phrase international observers offhand (I am sure it’s happened but just missed it) but they are definitely needed in that country. They seem to be degrading themselves to third world, in function if not by cold war meaning.

1·2 days agoBeing Canadian in what is one of our larger (not major to be clear like 150k people) cities, when I went to the office it took 10ish mins. I moved a bit so had varying times. I work from home now so doesn’t really matter.
That said I love listening to audiobooks in the car. My android phone has been odd for connecting but working lately so I just continue on whichever book I’m listening to, for about 3mins to the store. I don’t go far heh. Bit longer if I drive closer to the office for a car wash every few weeks.

4·2 days agoHell with billionaires and tax cuts to increase something the average person won’t enjoy, I bet it’s even more than thrice.
Property tax increase cause property is used but not taxed due to being a ‘big project’, if another company built there (besides say wal mart it’d be taxed)
Power bill increase, which we see happens to OPs post.
Using land that could benefit the area, it’s probably a large complex that could help the locals and not make their power bill larger.
Having a complex that heats up local area for things not beneficial to locals. Global warming but thankfully some ai model will grow?
Using water that makes drinking water worse for locals. Read stories of people near data centers, losing all water pressure so the data center can have water. Cause that’s more important than people.
Only helping the person who built it vs the locals. I really have no idea who data centers help. I assume some are for the crappy bit we see when we Google but so many must be private. Also who hasn’t learned to go through search results? Seriously that’s a skill needed, if you don’t have it you need to learn. I may have accepted the new paradigm but I would prefer a bit of work going back to searching.
There no good reason for this crap. They get built but don’t benefit anyone but the rich. They just want serfs anyways, is that the real future?
There’s an argument about the pandemic team he disbanded could have recognized COVID early enough so it’d barely be a blip or known in our memories. So perhaps still, even if he didn’t try. He just wanted more money for his personal things, plus recind anything Obama did. Like the Iran agreement. Not to mention all the soft power US used to have and acting like the US can still do everything, and not cause a worldwide fuel issue. Slightly different metrics but I think he ranks up there myself.
Okay maybe he didn’t set out to get people killed but even worse he doesn’t care he did, that’s gotta be close in being awful. Let alone with any decision he makes is to benefit himself, never the people. I’m not sure how often a powerful empire has had a dude in charge to break everything but I don’t know much history. Least hell be known as one of the crazy leaders, but we know he just wants all the money and whatever it takes.
I believe that perspective works still.

TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•Best Star Trek Captain (wrong answers only)
3·3 days agoheh just started watching this again for whatever streaming it’s on for Canada now. And since the garage it crashed into wasn’t obliterated must be a single person craft. So yes, Alf is technically a captain, like invader Zim is a conquerer I imagine.
Okay maybe not a king but Faramir seems like a good catch (who she marries for those that are less familiar with the novel story). Mean one of the few who understood the ring enough to let Frodo go onwards. Been awhile since I’ve listened to the book to recall specifics (current listen through they just got to Rivendell) but pretty sure he understood what he was doing at the time due to him being more educated and from gandalf at some points in his education. Heh possibly why Gandalf took the time to do that even.
Not uncommon for a picnic type meal (or meal eaten at a picnic table anyways) and it’s summer and all. My parents did similar growing up in the 80s but can’t say I’ve done it myself since I save the crisps for later. Basically a choice of sandwich and some side chips to go with it. Yes I know I changed terms of chips I just enjoy using various words, always fun when French fries are involved. Being Canadian I used a bit of both sides of English, thong was the flip flops on the feet in my house, though also no sisters which may have impacted how that word was used. If anyone else enjoys Danny Bhoy comedian I always loved his bit on thongs.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I am someone who works out daily and sweats a lot. Just doing laundry doesn't seem to adequately clean the underarms of my shirts. What are some ways to clean these areas of my clothing better?
3·9 days agoThey make non aluminum antiperspirants (least according to the package, I’m using Dove ones currently) that boast all day protection. Since I switched my shirts don’t get stained in the arm pits anymore.
Also found trimming armpit hair helped too.

3·10 days agoWait he’s in a newer one with Harry Potter? Fuck yes. I actually haven’t seen Radcliffe in much else except Extras which he was hilarious in (probably mid Harry Potter movies), actually one of my favourite bits from that show.
I appreciate you telling me, I’ll have to check it out. Being old I miss a lot of random things now but would never want to miss a good laugh which Weird Al never disappointed with.

2·12 days agoReminds me of a line from Schnidlers List (movie) where he says he had so many failed businesses, what was missing? War. Though I think Japan is supplying the wrong side for sure.
Got my brain on first read, I bet he’d be amused how it looks at a quick glance.
Funny it doesn’t smell druish.

Do they get to the crescendo? I don’t know much about music but trying my hand and took some course and there was a comment ‘listen to this one it sounds like it’s building the entire song’ but the song never gets there. Bit melancholy/sad type tones chord progression but seems like it’s epic in its sound. Course the epic part may be due to the composer knowing his stuff but the idea was a chord progression that kept building to nowhere.
So curious of that sounds about right for your description. I forget the name but when the instructor put a link I was like oh yeah that song, like lots of movies or probably commercials used similar for the emotion. À
Just be cool to know another name if that sounds right is all. Enjoy finding more examples to compare and notice what makes the sound (even if I can’t reproduce it)
