orbitz@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•We don’t memorize phone numbers anymore, we rely on GPS to tell us where to go and Facebook reminds us of birthdays. What else will we stop remembering once AI remembers everything for us?2·7 小时前Been a bit guess it’s time for that series again.
The Dark Tower by Stephen King for those that aren’t familiar with it. It’s a lot more ‘weird’ than say what you’d expect from his horror novels. I think it’s probably closer to the old strange stories from magazines way back in the day. I think that’s a major reason I like it. Oh not to spoil much (it’s like 7 books this comes out in the 2nd or so so by page count the intro) Evidently I f’ed up the tags so didn’t work as a spoiler I’ll add spaces just in case.
::: small spoiler here
It’s a multiverse story which is way better than you may think, if you like that thing, I do and wish I realized a decade or two sooner

According to Wikipedia it was because a pub owner was trying to evict him due to non-payment of his room and he wouldn’t move out. He was also a SA commander in charge of a several squads.
Edit guess I was a bit late confirming the wiki article but I will leave it here so people can read the only source I checked.
Took a minute to understand what the paradox is, least I think I got it, you can’t assume everything with a singular characteristic of the opposite statement is not the same type? Or did I miss something? But I can see how this would be used in ‘debates’ by those not wanting a true discussion and trying to make their point through less than logical process. It sounds right at first but then you think about it and realize no that’s not exactly correct but by then they start a new line of attack to keep you thinking of anything but the real substance of the debate…
I do wish I understood abstraction better with logic, probably should take some philosophy classes.
orbitz@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•Peter Thiel Antichrist lecture: We asked guests what the hell it isEnglish5·7 天前Isn’t the first part what’s going on in the US? I assume the AI part isn’t part of the government here.
Also isn’t Vance funded by Theil?
Now comic books are kinda out of date, they used to assume you couldn’t be that evil and say you are while no one stops you from your plan while you talk about it non stop.
One time I managed to roll 1 to hit, 20 for dex check (had to roll under I forget current rules, over two decades ago), okay I’m dual wielding could be worse, rolled 1 to hit then 20 for dex check on second attack…huh…I don’t buy lottery tickets and barely have interest in scratch tickets at Xmas. That’s my usual luck though those rolls were a once in a lifetime.
Yes probably some house rules going on was 2nd edition just how we played then.
Even without much education, I was a geek in a rural location, one time a friend’s dad put a cigarette (half 3/4 done or so) on a fence cause we were having a competition and we hit them all. Mean the cigarette was only say 15 - 20 feet away but I I split it in half with a BB gun (yes no kick of course), probably luck but I was hitting the targets too and the dad figured no one would hit that one. It wasn’t a long range but I figure someone with access to a rifle should shoot fine enough if they practice even a bit if I can without access. I only shot a gun maybe a dozen times in total.
orbitz@lemmy.cato News@lemmy.world•Charlie Kirk dies after shooting at Utah Valley University121·14 天前Didn’t he help organize buses to Jan 6? Least I’m pretty sure I read that back then. Not that murder has any excuse of course so I’d never condone it in the least. I do mean that but wondering if his rhetoric had any influence on the action or was a personal issue.
Flags lowered by Trump’s orders? Well take that as you like. Like he cares about anyone that doesn’t bend the knee. Probably a good excuse for the military to deploy there now for him.
When I was a kid I saw some model train stuff in boxes in our house storage and asked about it, my dad said we needed a transformer, unfortunately not the many Transformers I had in my toybox…we never got the power one but I always remember thinking we needed one to power trains for years. No idea what ever happened to them, now that I think of it I assume my Mom made sure we didn’t have storage after a move, I always wanted to see those trains move.
There are and it’s so mystifying. I have no idea how someone could experience that in real time and not get it. Mean I sort of get it but it’s one of those things that make my brain want spring out of my head when I do try., like a divide by 0 or segmentation fault.
Oh well not like we are trying to make our planet liveable for the future. Mean I got no kids but I sure want the human race to continue comfortably. If not well maybe it’ll be time for Super Mario Bros the movie timeline, reptiles will take over against b. Oh hey it works, we burned up the oil anyways so that’s why they’re electric (in the movie)
When covid started and seeing news reports of many people dying I was so scared. They had no idea what it was then or any infection vectors. I recall seeing something from Italy and it was horrific. This was maybe early spring late or winter 2020 (maybe I got the country wrong but I don’t think so). Anyone who could have seen that and not understood what that means has no right to an opinion on the impact of viruses or on how a society needs to be run. Mean didn’t NYC have freezer trucks at one point?
Man we have degenerated as a society to let that happen in the world’s strongest military power (mean we can’t all have the propaganda might Russia does). But sure let’s give the person who did the worst a welcome mat to the Presidential position again. Ugh I thought we could have learned better.
I am not American but understand the impacts the orange dictator does in his name (only say it that way cause his brain is no better than potato salad, fuck project 2025 and Miller).
But long but this whole world situation is very frustrating. Like it’s right there for everyone to see but let’s blame neighbors not the people who’ve been in charge.
Edit forgot to add, as scared as I was I made a decision to do the best for my household, when reccomdations came through I followed them as best I could. I wanted to make sure the people I cared about were safe. It’s a shame that many of the people who figured that out are shunned these days.
orbitz@lemmy.cato Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•Russia hits seat of Ukraine government in war's biggest air attack5·17 天前Mon fransais est mal mais je parles en l’anglais…I hope that’s okay.
That’s horrible and the only shining light may be that Putin embarrassed Trump enough with his recent meeting with India and China he may actually do something in retaliation. Hopefully spend more to assist Ukraine though I don’t think Trump likes Ukraine after impeachment number 1. Also I hope we as Canada do more too but we don’t have as much money. It is a terrible act that needs a noticeable action.
Course we know who Trump admires and unfortunately the US has the largest purse to make the biggest difference.
orbitz@lemmy.cato Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Tucker Carlson says Pete Buttigieg is 'fake gay,' should answer questions about gay sexEnglish4·19 天前I think serious replies if the question was serious are not applicable here. This is a millionaire funded by billionaires. He’s not serious, even Jon Stewart got him to remove his usual bow tie after a verbal spanking that would make nuns proud. He has no grounds to be serious, he’s fanning flames for the olichary or whomever pays him to have more power.
I don’t have references for any of this except the crossfire but where Stewart put him in his place. Dude’s confused look seems like he’s surprised at his own farts.
orbitz@lemmy.catoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•The world if christian lived by christian valuesEnglish1·19 天前Misquote or not, it’s a worthwhile one. I’m not religious in the least, but always thought the ideal of love your neighbor was a pretty good one. Even if they make noise after late hours and annoy you for reasons not just cause they are from a different culture.
Also yes I’m sure there are many quotes in the Bible that say otherwise but I think the idea of Christianity and new testament sort of surpassed many of those quotes. Not that many consider that, and I’m sure there’s new testament quotes that go against it but I’ll be honest I only was taught it in elementary and a bit middle school.
We need to get along if we have so many people around, is the idea I imagine. Not that they could imagine the cities of today.
Also Buddha’s teachings are quite nice too. They have their issues, don’t let their issues cause you distress but be helpful if you’re able to. Least that’s what I took of his teachings, also a good philosophy, least I think so. I did listen to a lot of Buddhist sermons and perhaps took some of them wrong but he appeared to be more live and let live, help others if they would like it, if not then no worries. If only all religions were similar to that.
I’ve rewritten much of my code as needs changed, I call myself an idiot a lot since I’ve worked on this program nearly a decade and was my first professional software so often change old code I wrote. Though it was more additional at first since I used a lot of code the lead programmer did. Though he duplicated everything as needed for a tiny change ugh. Least I know how not to do it.
I highly recommend everyone to read up on Feynman, he is absolutely one of the genius that you can read about for modern times (well probably Hawking too). He gave me the urge to understand calculus and even if I never got there (I will probably try till I die because I wish I understood the world in a similar way), I so wish I could understand it 1/10 of he did. Also the biographies and other stories show how much he loves what he did, if we only could have many more with such interest in science. Mean maybe we do I don’t read science journals but his drive I think shows a lot.
orbitz@lemmy.cato Hardware@lemmy.world•Prisoner laments reliance on floppy disks for appeals documents, limiting file sizes to 1.44 MB — prisoners allowed 20 floppy disks in cell, but USB flash sticks are banned in New Jersey systemEnglish1·1 个月前Is that not all old ‘hard drives’ like before SSD ones or did I misrecall something? Like anything with a platter. Anything newer would be solid state right? Maybe I was more commercial drives, did have that in my background but it’s been a decade now heh.
Mean I get the idea, but when you can filter crap for facts then it still helps and gives you lots of info, like how to set up a new router, change a filter (take your pick of what).Just don’t go down the opinion stuff.
I assume I’m too old and just don’t see half the crap others see cause they realize I’m old and ornary like an alligator, imagine that gives people an idea of age heh.
