  • I love that I know exactly where this frame is from.

  • I've inadvertently ridden my bicycle through a couple school zones during drop-off times - and I'm sure pick-up times would be even worse.

Cycling around cars has an element of risk that we all know and accept. But that risk goes WAY UP in school zones at drop-off time. You'd think drivers would be looking for kids, people, etc. as they drop their precious off IN A SCHOOL ZONE. But, no.

For example: One started to pull out in front of me - I was in the lane, riding past, and she was pulling out of the school's driveway. I avoided her with some vigorous braking, then she had the gall to pull up at a light and tell me I should be careful.

  • When I worked for the federal government, it meant outreach to minority communities, trying to get more to apply. Once they applied, they were on the same playing field as everyone else.

On a related note: Every time I see a video on Facebook of a crash caused by a tractor trailer, I see racist comments, guessing who the driver was, as though no white guy has ever wrecked a truck. It's insane. It's so deep in their heads that rational thought is gone.

  • ...the stability makes them much better for winter riding.

I'm curious what you mean by this. I ride (a regular bike) outdoors year round, and other than the clothing and the sense of "Why am I doing this?", there's not really much different. But I'm not riding in snow or other weather, so maybe that's what you are referring to.

  • Somehow, it's even more disturbing in color.

  • I was rocking in the car before we could say it was a cell phone call!

  • And you assumed everyone else does the same?!

I think you owe me an apology.

  • Huh this brings back a memory of installing an aftermarket firmware on some ipod-like device. I don't remember the device or the firmware... I probably still have it lying around somewhere though.

It was a good movie, but I haven't watched it since.

  • Cycling shorts have padding in them already; adding underwear is counterproductive.

  • Getting blasted on socials from a parent that refuses to believe their kid is anything but an angel.

  • Saw her on Colbert the other night. She seemed rather... devoted to her belief that Biden was great and never had a misstep. It was kind of disturbing actually.

  • I used VirtualBox on Linux to host my Home Assistant server for a while. I kept having odd issues with usb devices. I'd have to disconnect and reconnect them to get them working again.

Many people in the HA help groups say not to use VirtualBox, and at first I thought they were basing that on old info. But then I started having issues, too. On the other hand, kvm has been rock solid for a long time.

So I'm glad to see they continue to develop it, but I wouldn't recommend it for heavy duty use. It's useful to dipping toes into virtualization, or maybe for running systems for the short term (a few hours here and there, or something), but for long term use, I'd go another route. It's certainly easier to set up the network in VirtualBox, I'll grant that - it took me a while to get it right for HA on kvm. (Of course, that's a one-time setup thing, too - I shouldn't have to touch it again. And don't ask me what I did, because I don't remember!)

  • Not sure why it's mechanical in the comic though. Must be referencing something else too?

Few live elephants can keep up highway speeds!

  • I thought everyone had forgotten about Master and Commander.

Much like the first X-Files movie.

Saw both of those in the theater!

  • You get used to it!

Signed, cat servant who has one that sleeps at his feet.

But it could be worse: We also have a 60 lb (27 kg) dog that likes to cuddle with my wife. So I definitely have the better end of the deal.

  • Yeah I used to compile my own kernels, selecting only the drivers I needed.

I'm sure I wasted far more time doing all that than I saved with a (theoretically) faster day to day system. Now I use stock kernels, and they work great!

  • I did the handlebar tape on a bike recently and discovered the bar end caps were corks. The owner had put his initials on them.

I bagged them up and left them with the bike in case the owner wanted them. :)

  • This from the guy that wants the Nobel peace prize.
