  • Yeah, once my isp had me verify that the power light on my ont was on, then asked me to plug in a lamp to confirm the outlet was working...

Another time they had me do all kinds of troubleshooting, insisting there was no outage in the area... It turned out a truck had taken out the wires over the road.

On a related note to the last one, if we have a power outage, I get an email from them right away - before the ceiling fans stop spinning - warning me the internet might not work without power. But, somehow, they can't detect outages in their own network.

  • Too bad. They used to be a coveted brand.

  • Thanks, I'll try that next time I see one.

  • This one is fine for me, but I've had others with the same issue. I assumed it was a quirk in the app I use (Boost).

  • Nice. I might have to get that. Thanks!

  • For some reason, if I were doing the physical media route, I'd want to ship the drives via FedEx or something similar. Presumably this isn't the only copy of the data. Even if you still need to go, just dragging these drives around seems risky.

  • My gaming PC has a power button on the top of the case. It makes a lot of sense to put it there...

...except when you have cats. And I have 3. I have had it "helpfully" shut off at least twice mid-game. Now I have something that I keep over the button in case the cat is wandering around again.

  • Many aftermarket radios still support that detachable face feature!

The stock radio in my 1999 model year car had a couple buttons that were removable (instead of the entire face, but it disabled the radio just the same). But no one was stealing stock Ford radios, as far as I know.

  • I remember seeing an SUV that had this in vinyl on their back window (paraphrased, I don't remember the exact wording): "RIP so-and-so - God cured his suffering and took him to Heaven."

So, God either gets credit for killing the guy, or he gets credit for saving the guy. No matter what, God comes out as the good guy!

I have no idea how people live in this mindset.

  • Our tabby played fetch when she was young, but grew out of it after a year or two. It was so much fun!

Now we have a dog that doesn't play fetch either. He's a keep-away dog.

  • In fairness the disease might be taking away her ability to connect those dots.

It's tough though. I dread dealing with these issues with my own parents.

  • So we know Vulcans have that 7-year mating cycle thing. Doesn't that imply the Romulans have the same?

  • I agree on Enterprise. I gave up following the fandom of Star Trek when Enterprise was airing because I was tired of hearing that I was stupid for liking it or whatever. Better to just enjoy it and not care what others think.

  • The Wii? We've come up with much more bizarre things than that!

  • We have one that loves water. He's gotten into running showers several times.

  • You can turn the encryption off if you are comfortable with the network you're storing your backups on. The encryption is a good idea for people using cloud backups, but I'm not sure it's necessary for backups on, say, my internal server.

  • Yeah, I get it, but my friend wasn't even driving a constant speed - sometimes he was over the speed limit; other times he was 5 or 10 under. In the middle lane of 3. Basically being one of those drivers that is inconsistent. I hate when people are inconsistent with their speed and we keep passing back and forth. Just pick a speed and stick to it.

  • Yeah this was a feature they enabled by default for everyone a while back. When people complained, the True Believers told everyone they should have read the release notes. I think the developers undid the encryption by default option, but there are a lot of people out there with encrypted backups as a result of the change, and some of them have no idea.
