  • I don't think simply forwarding the port actually works with free Plex anymore. I think if the server has a different public IP from the client it asks you to pay, even if you're connecting to the server over LAN.

Edit: That doesn't appear to be true. I'm not entirely sure how Plex is checking whether you're trying to stream remotely. In my case at least it works if I connect to my server using the LAN IP, but not if I use DNS (even though it resolves to the same IP). Maybe I'm missing something to allow it to work using the hostname.

  • Working "watched" labels on the Apple TV client would be nice. Not having those is a deal breaker for me considering 99% of my use case is streaming media to my Apple TV over LAN.

I have Jellyfin running along side Plex in case I want to do remote streaming, but I never use it and generally just copy the files for what I want to watch to my laptop if I'm going to be watching something away from home. Or I can just VPN in to my home network.

  • I have the most important numbers stored in a note on my smartwatch (and my bike's head unit) so I can still call people in an emergency even if my phone is dead. I should probably put them on a note in my wallet too.

  • you get it by stealing wages and time from the workers below you

That and turning kids into gambling addicts.

  • I agree. I live in a city and cycling for sport in the city sucks, regardless of whether there are bike lanes or not. There are too many traffic lights and traffic gets in the way. The good cycling spots are outside the city like you said and bike lanes are great to get out of the city and to those spots. Plus, I'd wager most people who cycle for sport also do a lot of other trips by bike too.

I also just want my loved ones to be able to get from point A to point B safely. That's way more important than my sport.

  • As a middle aged man in lycra who enjoys riding road bikes fast for sport and is comfortable riding in traffic: That Forester guy sounds like a dick. One of the things that makes bikes so cool is that they come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, optimised for different use cases. Road bikes are cool, but so are mountain bikes, cargo bikes, fixed gear bikes, dutch style upright bikes, etc. And even if countless near death experiences while cycling around cars have made me feel comfortable (or complacent?) riding in traffic, I still appreciate good cycling infrastructure. People deserve to be safe and every trip taken by bike instead of by car is a win.

  • If you can share the cost of a VPN with one or more other people (most allow multiple devices to connect at the same time), it'll be much cheaper. Or if you can't afford that either, try to find someone who will let you use theirs for free. Maybe you can even find someone who isn't tech savvy who will pay you a few bucks a month to cover the VPN in exchange for you downloading Linux ISOs for them.

  • Gamers think they hate video game companies, when they really just hate capitalism.

  • A well fitting road bike saddle is designed to have you sitting on your seat bones, rather than your soft tissue, often with a cutout in the middle to relieve pressure from the genital area. This is much more comfortable on long rides. The padding is minimal, since you are expected to wear padded shorts to minimise friction. Some people also use chamois cream to further reduce chafing, although I personally don't find this to be all that necessary and only really use it on longer rides, if at all. This setup is much more comfortable if you're going to spend long hours in the saddle, especially if you do it regularly and your butt is used to it.

Like with most bike parts, saddles come in all different shapes and sizes and different types make sense for different types of riding.

  • The reason for not wearing underwear is that it can cause chafing or pressure points where it shifts or creases. Cycling shorts are designed to minimise that by not doing either. There is nothing nasty about cycling shorts if you wash them after each ride. If anything they handle sweat better than cotton underwear would.

That being said, if you feel better wearing underwear, then you should feel free to do so. But there are practical reasons why most people don't and they don't have anything to do with trying to be a "real cyclist".
