Seriously, looking critically at the Road and Belt initiative is perfectly warranted but this article focuses too much on the benefits for china as if that in itself were a bad thing.The potential downsides or risks for Serbia are barely mentioned without going into any detail, why those things are supposed to be bad.
They keep pointing out that Serbia is paying for this as if paying for your own infrastructure were somehow an utterly alien concept. It's called an investment, you pay in advance to reap the benefits later.If they want us to thinks it's a bad investment they should focus more on why they think it doesn't profit Serbia enough to justify the spending instead of pointing out how that helps China.
The half sentence "without broader national interest or benefit to its own economy." could have been at least two entire paragraphs pointing out downsides for Serbia, instead the article rambles on about how China builds a trade infrastructure, as if countries with such infrastructure wouldn't profit off trade as well.

I agree that IF you have to spend money on defense, you might as well do it domestically but that should be an added bonus, not a major point.Economically speaking, the defense industry is a terrible investment. At best the goods it produces just sit there and are never needed, at worst they are used up. The US military industrial complex is not a healthy, useful or productive industry. Jobs in just about any other industry are more useful for society and/or the economy.
Defense spending should be purely driven by security requirements. Potential jobs created are a nice bonus but should not be part of why you're doing it.

The total tax and social security contribution would have to be at 100% for that to be true.
If you want people to be able to afford more with their money, then I'd advocate for lower VAT and/or dropping the VAT for basic foods and products to 0%. That wold also help the poor more, serve as a better social redistribution measure and could contribute to more domestic demand.
