  • Conspiracy theory: It's a ploy to make the Ai image piss filter seem more normal and validate it as an aesthetic choice instead of being the signifier for the lowest of low, the ultimate slop garbage devoid of any humanity or anything interesting.

  • The size of the US national debt does not matter. The US will always* be able to pay its debt as long as its the central economical/political/military force on this planet. It can always make more dollars if it deems that necessary and always has done so in the past. And as long as you build functional and necessary state things, every economist and every journalist that points at the debt needs to be bullied and stuffed in a locker. Debt matters to nations depending on IMF/US loans and that's an entirely different issue.

However if all your burger nation pays for is bombs, genocide, brown shirts, fat cops with tanks, wall street losses, ai bubbles, real estate bubbles, jeffrey epstein flights and failsons crack adventures abroad... You might not get a good "return of investment" as they say and you devalue your own currency for very little long term benefits.

But these things in itself are already dissolving the societal connections much more than an additional 0.5% inflation due to debt. The real "inflation" is the direct result of ever increasing rent seeking, quasi monopolies, disfunctional social systems and the short term demands of share holders. I.e. captialisms core mechanisms. And the real damage is not to your financial health, but is literally just large scale physical and mental violence to an ever increasing amount of people.

  • ...Hex Bear? Like the animal?

Yes Snake. Your contact in Pakistan. Named after a radical communist resistance group in Karachi. It got destroyed after repeated ideological struggle sessions involving cats, but it's exceptional meme skills still inspire the common people to this day

  • Those satellite images and it's descriptions invoke a lovecraftian horror of scale and vertigo in me. We have the phrase "a perfect storm" and that's the one.

"Unimaginable violence is hiding in the eyewall" is just straight up a Cthulhu description. And the exhausted hopeless scientists just ever and ever repeating, that yes, it's our fault, we made it, we called it and if we keep burning the planet, more and bigger ones will come.

  • Basically the two modes of my ADHD

  • They look the inverse animal of each other.

  • It looks like one of those animals where the popular rumor is "They actually should not be able to fly! We still don't know how they do it". That is, of course, wrong... It's clearly thrown like a snowball for fun by larger animals such as bears and apes to get enough lift under it's tiny wings.

  • The likelihood of aliens existing somewhere in the unierse is 1, unless you believe earth is the divine special place and not just a lucky rock. If you think we're one in a billion, then there is at least a hundred other ones in the Galaxy.

The likelihood of anyone showing up anywhere near us ever is pretty much zero. Space is too big and the speed of light is too low . Unless they are the divine species, and that's just too terrifying to think about.

  • I had almost forgotten about this. Thank you, hexbear account of rachel jake, CEO.

  • Warhammer40k-ass name. And like 40k it looks like someone made an obvious satirical exaggeration that is meant to make you recoil and then some asshole came and said "that's actually good and cool and represents my personality".

And then they park at 3 parking spots simultaneously in front of an McDonald's in an desolate American suburb to get the new BaconChokerSupreme and they feel absolutely nothing. An empty void where the human soul should be.

  • I think that's a good sign of taste though. Games are so incredibly diverse, even the ones that reach the peak of their genre can be just eh for others.

I'll never finish Witcher 3 because that's just too much stuff for my little adhd brain. Ghost of Tsushima was a wonderful 2 hours of ogling at the most beautiful wind-swept grass fields I've ever seen and I'll never touch it again.

There is probably fantastic shmups or fighting games that I will never touch. But I gladly bang my head for 5 hours against the next Gulgagram, Darkblood Impaler From Soft throws at me and defend the 15 ms reaction window I have to dodge his instant kill grab.

  • Because I like to live on a habitable planet more than I like your ability to prompt a defective and stylisticly pathetic essay for your college class.

Scientists have estimated that the power requirements of data centers in North America increased from 2,688 megawatts at the end of 2022 to 5,341 megawatts at the end of 2023, partly driven by the demands of generative AI. Globally, the electricity consumption of data centers rose to 460 terawatt-hours in 2022. This would have made data centers the 11th largest electricity consumer in the world, between the nations of Saudi Arabia (371 terawatt-hours) and France (463 terawatt-hours), according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

By 2026, the electricity consumption of data centers is expected to approach 1,050 terawatt-hours (which would bump data centers up to fifth place on the global list, between Japan and Russia).

If your phone could do the ai trash, it would still be morally bankrupt and devoid of any humanity. But it's done on 5 gpus that eat as much energy as your entire household.

The real usefulness of ai technology is probably limited to 1% of what it is now. Signal processing, protein folding, translation and transcription are all fine and well. But it is 99% spam and so I'll judge the technology on that.

  • $1 is worth BRL 10.

You buy $ 100 with BRL 1000. You tell your broker, you'll pay him back later the BRL, for a fee. That's a "short".

You package it in a bet that says "whatever the difference is in BRL when I pay you back, we will do it 10x". That's "leverage", alternatively also "insane stock market gambling nonsense".

The tariffs get announced. You can now get BRL 10.2 for $1, because that's how the stock market thinks it's should be. You pay back your debt in BRL with $98. The difference of $2 gets increased 10x because of that bet. Congratulations, You made $20 with insider trading.

Usually you try to hide these things among the general stock market noise and not trade so much money, that it makes a visible dent in the evaluation of an entire fucking currency. It's common place, but as usual with Trump, just more on the nose, more blatant and just more fuck you.

  • For children it was perhaps the last time where at least a bit of your innocence could last beyond age 12 or 13. Less control, more "well, the sun is shining, let's hope they will be back by dinner". I've probably never have known a neighborhood in more detail than when i was 8. You could do something stupid and it wouldn't be filmed or photographed, with date and location tag, immediately uploaded into the cloud and available at a buttons press. You could get BORED, and then you'd do something that you hadn't tried before, because you couldn't just grab your phone and bombard yourself with tiny dopamine hits.

My nieces/nephews are struggling with this so hard. They are good kids and their parents are doing a commendable job, but they are lucky to have enough time and enough awareness to strictly limit their kids access to media.
