  • I read that as Viking Owl, and I felt it made sense.

  • Like others have mentioned, those of us in the know probably don't need much help picking alternatives here, as we're likely to know what the options are and how they differ. For the regular Jane and Joe to even stand a chance in a pretty confusing landscape it needs to be as simple as possible to get going with an alternative, or else I fear most people will just fall back on the well known, well marketed options.

I suggested to a non-techy coworker (a Reddit user) he'd give Lemmy a shot, and when I asked him how it went a couple of days later he said he got confused during the sign up process, "what the heck is an instance, which one should I pick?".

  • Nice work! Gohug, is that short for something, or does it mean what it reads, i.e. go hug the EU?

  • Ah, I forgot to mention that I live in Norway, and over here debit cards started taking over from check use in the 80s.

  • I last remember seeing my mom write one in the mid 80s. Personally I've never used one, and I'm pushing 50.

  • Add to that how most poor people in the US are in that situation because they live in a every-man-for-himself society, created and maintained by the rich because infighting among the populace keeps them from looking higher and wider to solve their problems.

  • I'm so sorry, I meant to say except Bernie - the man is a legend.

  • Seems all the doers over there are busy sending the country, and indeed the world, down the crapper.

It may well be just the picture painted by the publications I tend to read, but it's easy to get the impression that the democrats have fallen more or less silent (Bernie excluded), while the republicans are spewing shit from mountain tops all day long. Is that how you American folks feel, too, or is it just my news sources that are failing me?

Edit: I meant to say Bernie not included!

  • Hehe, probably. It's just something I like to say, with the implication being that if the speed of light is fast, then the speed of darkness must be slow. It stands to reason, right?

  • I like how they both appear to have faces of pure bliss, and folding their front paws together in prayer. We must fight but let's pray it'll be a civil fight.

  • Alright, we'll give you really cool claws, but the trade-off is that you'll move with the speed of darkness.

  • Same in Norwegian, dovendyr.

Doven = lazy, or more accurately, "action less". Dyr = animal.

  • How the heck do you clean your old carburators? /j

  • I never considered how devastating the collapse of the Berlin wall must've been to some Americans. /s

  • love America because it doesn’t have kings

I'm not convinced a president who can act with greater impunity than a king in any modern monarchy is better.

I read that a lot, "we don't have a king, thank cod". Is it because you've seen what a hell hole e.g. the Scandinavian countries are? /s

A king in a modern monarchy is nothing more than a representative of the country. He cuts ribbons and holds encouraging speeches on New Year's. That's pretty much it.

  • Unless you unfold it (duh), the 9 fold has a smaller screen than the 9 pro.

Fwiw, I've had folding phones for a few years now and never had one break or begin to feel worn, but I'm sure millage will vary a lot depending on use.

Personally I love having the option to quickly get some more screen real estate. Perfect for spreadsheets, presentations, and video. Running things like remote desktop is also nicer. Having two apps side-by-side definitely has its' uses, e.g. I can look at that screenshot/thing someone sent me on slack while I'm typing up my reply (or browse Lemmy while "following" a dull work all hands).

I bought my first folding phone on a bit of a whim, pretty just because I wanted to check it out, but now I think I'd miss it a lot if I didn't have one.

  • A bit off topic; a friend of mine purchased a play mat for his kid, one of those you put on the floor with a birdseye view of roads, buildings etc., from wish (yeah, expectations weren't high to begin with). When it arrived he realized it was roughly 30 by 30 centimeters.

We went back and looked at the listing on wish, and while no dimensions were listed, the one image it had was of a kid sitting on the mat playing. That kid must've been less than 5 centimeters tall.

  • Happy birthday, you gorgeous girl!

  • Same in Norwegian.

Looks like this one is a popular candidate for the longest official word:

    Minoritetsladningsbærerdiffusjonskoeffisientmålingsapparatur.

It's an instrument for measuring the distance between particles in crystalline materials.
