  • would it be alright for a certain price point to be stuck in the level of tech circa 2020

I'm not worried about consumers being stuck with 16gb DDR4 RAM or GPUs with 6 or 8 gigs of VRAM. I'm worried about companies simply deciding they're done with the PC market altogether and no longer manufacturing new parts at all

  • Introducing TPM version 69, you will now need to verify your identity online before the machine will boot. Your CPU and ID will be permanently linked and all activity will be logged by an AI somewhere

  • I could see the EU getting pissy about Linux if they ever introduce a version of Chat Control for PCs, threatening distros that don't comply with whatever draconian horseshit they're cooking with ridiculous fines. France already thinks you're a drug-dealing terrorist pedophile if you use GrapheneOS on your phone

  • The thing with the current shortage is that it's way more profitable to sell the chips used for RAM and SSDs to giant corporations building AI data centers than to bother with the consumer market at all. It's not a co-ordinated push to ban personal computing per se, just a side effect that happens to align with the push for cloud/subscription bullshit Microsoft and others have a huge hard-on for and will probably dovetail nicely also the West's even bigger hard-on for doing every single fucking authoritarian thing they have been accusing China of doing for the past 20 years

  • It's mostly just going to be giant data centers

  • Uh oh, looks like you're not renewing your cloud storage subscription. The photos of your dead grandma have been deleted

  • So my impression was right, Japanese people don't really say "nerd." I have to say, the backstory ended up being even more stupid than I could have imagined. The name-drop doesn't even make sense in context, Raiden might have as well asked if the Colonel meant the Noid

  • Do Japanese people use the word nerd (ナード) that much? The only place I've ever seen it was in fan translated AVGN videos

  • I love that this was written by some Russian dad for his daughter because the game had no Russian localisation

  • Sometimes it's really obvious Rockstar is originally from Scotland. Same thing with the "fudge packed" donuts

  • I don't really care either, as Rockstar is most likely going to arbitrarily delay a PC port to entice people to pay for the game twice. Even when it comes out it probably won't run on my PC anyway

  • There's a huge amount of websites to browse in both 4 and 5. I never really noticed or cared when I was younger but there are three news websites you can visit, reporting on the same news stories from conservative, centrist and liberal angles, respectively. I don't always like the writing in GTA but it's a pretty good bit.

Here's the conservative and liberal articles about the Jingoism Act

Also in 5 you can go to the MySpace parody's website to find that it has been sold and shut down, which just goes to show how quickly the moment of time depicted in 4 passed. (In 5 the Facebook equivalent is the main form of social media which itself has become pretty dated by now.)

I assume there are going to be Reddit, Discord and TikTok parodies in GTA 6. A Twitter parody has existed since The Ballad of Gay Tony but it's never played a huge part

  • I've looked at a bunch of these listings and the reviews for most of these glues on AliExpress are all over the place with almost no one bothering to come back to report if the glue actually works and an alarming number saying the tubes arrived already dried or exploded all over the packaging. I suppose I might bite the bullet though

  • Add one analog stick and you've got the perfect controller for FF13

  • Assuming this thing would be a wallhack or something is vastly overestimating how useful it likely is

  • Yes, it's the Windows Game Bar UI

  • Later in the game, you can come across this news article about a girl that installed Eunux being targeted by an online hate campaign

The group of young, white, middle-class male virgins who make up the broad spectrum of the Eunux community has launched a hate campaign against a young woman in Alderney City who was discovered to have installed the open source operating system. The girl, who has asked not to be named for fear of an attempt on her life, is being relentlessly flamed in chatrooms by Eunux zealots across the country for having dared to step foot in the male-only world of open source software.

One disgruntled fanboy, blogging from his parents' basement in Broker, told the Liberty Tree, "Girls aren't allowed to touch Eunux. Just like I don't want to get on a plane with a female pilot. I don't want some chick messing around with my source code. We deliberately create ugly interfaces and make it as hard as possible to install programs in order to discourage women. First they start drinking beer and now this. Is nothing sacred any more? What next, a female president? I've tried speaking to girls in real life but all they do is laugh at me. I hope her kernel explodes." Many are already drawing parallels between this story and the female plumber who was run out of a San Andreas town last year.

  • The coolness of that initial concept is why I still occasionally log in every now and then. I wish someone made a toned down and realistic big city criminal simulator

  • 2008 was so long ago that concept of transgender computer geeks had not yet entered public consciousness. Hell, it was so long ago that autism was not associated with being a nerd

    Very cool fact Mr. Owl

  • Games @hexbear.net

    Does ACAB include Max Payne???
