  • That shit's garbage, yo.

The Democrat vs Republican divide will NEVER rise to a civil war. That's the whole point - limit people's understanding of "politics" to the spectrum of rainbow capitalism to fascism.

There may be a civil war in the coming decades, but it will be between capitalism and socialism.

Now is not the time in the movement to even talk about civil war - it is unnecessarily inflammatory to the existing system that has the power to crush any leftist organization.

For now, our strategy is the same as cockroaches: multiply and don't attract attention. Some of us will be caught in the light and smashed under boots, and they will find our deaths inconvenient, though mostly because they have to clean up our guts. When the light comes on we must scatter, because we don't have the strength to stop the boot from falling.

    Yet.

With every contradiction, we get stronger. With every crisis, every late paycheck, increased rent, asshole boss, price gouge, planned obsolescence, enshittified service, every FUCKING unskippable ad, our numbers grow. And one day, perhaps in our lifetimes, they will try to crush one of us, and the walls will explode in roaches. We will stand together by the millions and the boot will stop. And on that day, we will finally be free.

We have a long and perilous journey ahead of us, and we need everyone we can get. Take care of yourself, look out for each other, and continue to multiply.

    Our day will come.

  • Lmao who's the one person saying "I can excuse genocide, but I draw the line at pollution"

  • BECAUSE I SAID SO!!!

Now no more questions or I swear to GOD I will turn this post around

  • Oooohhh yes! I think any action that starts from "we can't do anything until tons of people get on board" is doomed, and getting fewer people with a critical function to near 100% buy-in still has significant leverage to get concessions.

  • Those absolutely make sense to me, thanks for sharing!

The first two kinda dovetail with something I've heard elsewhere - that unions are becoming a service that a worker subscribes to, and not something that they're actively participating in.

I think a militant minority would definitely get workers more leverage with corporations, but I understand why unions as a legal entity need to do things by the book. I think there's a balance to strike between the weak "we will follow all laws, regulations, and norms" and the mob-boss "it'd be a shame if something were to happen to production timelines," and I agree that things currently seem to skew too far towards the former.

  • Please share your untested ideas!

I think the fact that most folks aren't unionized is evidence enough that the old strategies aren't working.

Personally, I think the internet seems underutilized in getting folks organized (though I might just be ignorant). Shouldn't there be an app for that?

  • PLEASE STAY EAGER!!!!

More than anything, we are all cheering for you. I'm SO hyped up about this, and I think asking here is a brilliant way to get feedback.

Know that just by talking about it here, you're helping tons of people (myself included) learn the details of how to run a union campaign. We are collectively scheming, and it's awesome that we have folks with union experience to give advice on what has and hasn't worked in the past.

Making a pamphlet to hand out is a super reasonable idea, and you're saying correct things in it. I think lots of folks would have had the idea, made the pamphlet, passed it out, and possibly ran into the problems that folks are talking about.

I LOVE that you posted about it for feedback instead - I think THAT is the decision that makes us inevitable. You can leverage the collective knowledge of the hivemind, and at the same time are teaching us.

  • If capitalism wasn't so myopic and capable of thinking long term

I think the two are inseparable? i.e. short-sightedness is an emergent property of a society where individuals are motivated by capitalism.

Neoliberalism is an attempt to control the emergent properties of capitalism without changing individual's underlying motivators, and we see that it fails to do so.

The properties of a society emerge from the incentives, motivators, and beliefs that individuals in that society hold.

Changing motivators at the individual level is how a society can start thinking long term, and I don't think there's a way keep the extractive greed that capitalism promotes AND have a society that is run for the benefit of all people in the long term.

I really like Diallo's thoughts on a cultural revolution

  • First, I think there's some risk if she's telling people you two are dating. Definitely tell your wife, but you should also probably talk to her parents about it.

    1. If they start hearing stories about their daughter and you, they already have context for it
    2. You can work with them to decide how to proceed

This is an opportunity to teach her about boundaries, appropriate behavior, and unrequited love in a relatively controlled environment. She will listen to you in ways that she won't listen to parents.

You could have a direct conversation with her about how it's not ok to tell other people that you're dating. Tell her that it makes you uncomfortable that she knows you have a wife but still told you she has feeling for you. Tell her that you are happily married and not interested in dating a fourteen year old. Model clear communication.

And empathize with her that it's hard to have feelings for someone that doesn't like you back. Talk about how you've handled it in the past. Tell her that it'll pass. Tell her what she should know as she grows up.

She's a teenager, so her feelings for you will go away regardless, but I think you can make the rest of her life tangibly better by having a real conversation with her.

  • Yes! Knees over toes guy is great

I look like an absolute goober walking backwards up hills, but my knees are in decent shape so it's worth it.

  • This might be the bit already, but I unironically think the body is a great metaphor for how society should run!

E.g. different cells have different specializations, but every cell gets the nutrients it needs.

  • l don't think porn is categorically problematic. I think the content of the porn and the worldview that it espouses can absolutely be harmful, though.

I'd compare it to saying stand-up comedy is good or bad. It's neither. Stand-up comedy is a genre, and within it are smart folks doing great work AND chuds spewing hate.

My problem with porn is that it often objectifies women and primes men to view women as sex objects.

I think many men don't have actual friends that are women, and primarily engage with women romantically or sexually (and tbh, I don't think most men are self-aware enough to distinguish between the two).

The media we consume (porn included) influences our worldview. If men watch porn (or stand-up) that has misogynist undertones and don't have friends that are women as a counterbalance, I think they will trend towards a misogynist worldview.

  • Right!? You can't pour from an empty cup, and capitalism is systemically emptying everyone's cups.

I think the short answer is "join a local leftist org," typically DSA and PSL are mentioned.

I think the type of projects those orgs should prioritize are ones that give folks incrementally more freedom from capitalism.

I think the best example is forming a union & demanding higher pay, but at a community level you could also look into:

    • Community gardens
    • Tool libraries
    • Getting folks together to buy in bulk
  • Karoshi

  • 110 hours in a week is just under 16 hours per day. Get to work at 8 am, leave at midnight. Every day.

And as others pointed out, it's not even like they're doing anything important. This is cosplay of having a meaningful job.

  • HELL YEAH!!!! This is so inspiring, thank you for sharing!

About how long were y'all on strike before getting the goods?

  • Control through guilt.

Nobody wants an event to be ruined, and the narcissist knows this and uses it as a weapon to get what they want.

  • I could see it being a "softer" way of a community enforcing good behavior, especially for things that don't rise to the level of mod action.

I'm not on an instance with (visible?) downvotes though, and I do think that makes me more comfortable voicing opinions.

The hexbear mods/admins will probably have gotten community feedback and done a poll, so might be worth checking with them?
