It's hilarious because he has a point. A really good point. That Nobel's will has some stuff about using the prize and foundation to promote peace, this choice and her rhetoric and what is happening in the world clearly and undeniably are at odds with that goal except through tortured (peace is war) type neo-con reasoning of needing war and violence and suffering to bring about some sort of envisioned better state that leads to peace and there isn't a war in history that didn't have dishonest people justifying it that way so it's pretty bad. Thus they are in violation of some sort of contractual establishing stuff and should be forced to disband or take the award back or something. Of course nothing will happen because words, laws, contracts only serve the interests of the ruling class.

Say it with me now:
Hunger strikes only work when the government cares about you or is at risk of being held account and suffering grave geopolitical consequences by not pretending to care about you.
There is no one to hold them to grave geopolitical consequences by successfully painting the UK as a human rights infringing, oppressive shit-hole and hammering it home to an audience that is receptive and would matter to UK interests. And obviously they don't care about the suffering of these people. Hence the only merit this has is if it drums up more support domestically among people who get their news through non-sanctioned means and even then who knows. They can definitely get away with force-feeding these people and it'll be shrugged off by the same people shrugging off the genocide in Palestine. Of course the people in question are quite brave to have even gotten into this position but I want to point out how because these people aren't in China or Russia hunger striking against "bad thing government" it doesn't matter.
It's a fake-out most likely.
Venezuela had to put everything on highest alert in case Trump announced "as I speak 15 minutes ago our forces entered into a war with Venezuela" or whatever. Now that the moment has passed they relax a bit. US waits a while, does some more bombing then suddenly with minimal telegraphing begins huge strikes just after Christmas or on New Years or what have you.
It's clear they want to take out Maduro. That's a matter of getting the right intel and a sprinkling of luck. So IMO they wait until they have good intel on his location for a period of say "next hour", then move out and strike. Either to kill him or to quickly bring down Venezuela's air defenses, create a diversion, and drop special forces to capture him, extract and bring him to the US where they have a show trial and then sentence him to death (or life in prison). That or they kill him during the raid and bring his body back as a trophy. Once that happens, once the decapitating strike occurs, whether it succeeds or fails the US will roll out the rest of what it wants to do. That may be nothing. That may be expeditionary force to capture parts of the capitol and create a green zone, install an "international community recognized" government with the recent nobel winner at its head and bring in some Latin American pawns as occupation, sorry "peacekeeping" forces to help stabilize things, have their pawn declare the oil or some huge amount of proceeds thereof goes to the US and/or its corporations, then just beat on the Venezuelan military, destroy anything mechanized, anything too organized, etc.
I don't think they're foolish enough anymore to get drawn into trying to do jungle warfare and Vietnam 2.0 to pacify the whole country and they'll likely do the Iraq/Afghanistan thing with an internationally recognized green-zone they defend where their puppet government that rubber stamps things is which they viciously defend and fortify and then the rest of the country (minus oil fields) which they allow to be ruled by remaining elements of the Bolivarian revolution as unimportant. Meanwhile they strangle those parts of the country by not allowing significant imports or exports except through their puppet government, declare anything else to be illegal narcotic trafficking, terrorist financing, sanctions evasion, etc. This continues on for a decade until they get pushed out but by then they've made their moves on China and denied them a toe-hold in this hemisphere and by controlling Venezuelan oil they have near total control of global oil and can squeeze China economically.

citizenshiploot and treatsWhich means that those models now exist, and if they're being used, they will be cracked, and they will be used by people who crack them.
Eh I find this implausible and kind of a weak objection. People can't even crack Denuvo and I'm sure there are lot more poor gamers than there are pedophiles who aren't happy with existing models and methods and a burning desire for something like this. Fact is anyone close enough to this to "leak" it would almost certainly have the skills to just refine and train an open model to do the same thing with no risk of b being caught.
Fact is existing open source models can generate simulated images of children engaged in sexual conduct or nude. I don't think this model would likely be some great and amazing leap on that (it would likely at times generate results with flaws and oddities and detect generated images with similar flaws and oddities as well same as all models currently suffer) and the only people with access would be heavily monitored and face prison time and ruining of their life if they tried to take the whole model with them. Frankly there's no reason for this, pedophiles already have models they use and can adapt open models and feed them their own collections as well as just tune existing models trained entirely on adults and pictures of clothed children.
The actual training data (dataset) if actual CSAM is used would almost certainly come from and be done entirely in-house by the FBI, NCMEC, similar British agencies, etc who hold vast collections of CSAM. Certain top tech people who currently work on CSAM in collaboration with these agencies might be involved as well but a "leak" as you seem to suggest seems improbable.
I'm not axiomatically opposed to this technology. In a socialist state under a trustworthy party that cares for the well-being of the people and intends to use this tool for this and only this it wouldn't be a problem. The issue stems from how this is just a stepping stone to using the same cracked open door that this creates to implement detection of communist content, of anti-imperialist content, of trans content, etc and is used to create enemies lists in the west for the coming crackdown and violence they'll inflict and to exercise total control over electronic communications and a chilling effect on any questioning of the official narratives. The issue also exists of over-detection and no real care for appeal or justice. In a decent state hypothetically a false detection wouldn't ruin your life. Meanwhile in the west Google seeing you sharing a naked photo of your child with their doctor will NEVER reverse their decision to terminate your account and ban you for life over it and does not care a bit about giving you appeal, fairness, etc. So there will be innocent casualties of things that aren't even nudity or children and those people risk being digitally un-personed as a result to say nothing of being raided by the police and put through the ringer of their house being searched, electronics seized and not returned for weeks/months, etc. And that doesn't matter to these companies or the government and that's the problem.
Pro-Palestinian content seems obvious. Anything against NATO, anything against Britain, anything communist. Strangely (not really) fascist iconography will be left untouched and they'll be free to share as many fash memes as they like while the most mundane, weak left-lib anti-imperialist stuff gets blocked and gets you a message about being reported for extremism to your government.
Always the problem with this stuff in the west. The problem we must have with automated scanning of all images against CSAM hash database is this. I don't of course have any objection to stopping pedophiles or distribution of that stuff but there is no way, just no way that having created such a system that operates against phones, laptops, tablets, everything that the WEST (5/14/21 eyes, global snooping and spying, decades of illegal surveillance, entrapment, etc) don't begin slipping in hashes on political stuff. Oh it'll be the most extreme stuff first, ISIS propaganda images then support for the IRA, then general communist iconography and memes. And upon learning of this the copyright industry will demand inclusion, will demand a similar system be implemented for identifying copies of movies, TV shows, etc and alerting them of violations or blocking or deleting such content when found.

RIP. This will be used to further stigmatize the homeless and mentally ill (a favorite past-time of California liberals eager to out-fash the reactionaries around here on that front).
I believe it's because geopolitical concerns come first and foremost. What good is socialism if it is suffocated in the cradle by external forces?
If I'm being charitable and to China and the CPC I am, this would be in my mind a big concern. The moment the west is economically decoupled from you is the moment they can afford to do ANYTHING. From yes sanctions and blockades and conflicts to prevent you from selling to other markets like Europe, MENA, Africa, Latin/South America, Asian vassals, etc that strangle you and isolate you from the world like the USSR to truly violent and desperate acts like using nuclear weapons because there are no economic concerns. I think there may be those in the CPC who view the US with incredible concern as a deranged, violent maniac that only isn't attacking them viciously on multiple fronts because of their intertwined dependency. So the thinking goes you can't transition to socialism YET because doing that will scare off the capitalists, result in de-coupling, re-shoring (not necessarily to US but India for example) and result in a conflict. Better to bide your strength as long as you can and when the moment comes be as strong as you can be with people, industry, tech as advanced and built as you can reasonably make it so you hit the ground on the new cold war conflict running.
The problem with this type of thinking and planning of course is you risk having types who constantly make excuses for why now is not the right time even when it is, who resist change because they're risk averse or genuinely liberal thinking and enjoy all this private enterprise and capitalist market economy mode. So you have a risk of not striking at the ideal time and of rot setting in as well as of course the cost born by the Chinese people in situations of economic decline where rather than going the state planning route harder to alleviate that you believe they just have to endure it for the sake of "the plan". I am hopeful that China is just waiting until 2030 as their plans state and at that point having accumulated as much as they can in the interim and remaining as entangled with the west as they can economically they'll begin to change things around. But it's a real danger. It's playing with fire because it gives liberal-roaders, revisionists and opportunists opportunities to put a socialist sounding logical spin on their desires to keep things free market. And as others note deeper in this thread there's a real risk they can push for delays if economic stagnation occurs and they can say "we need more time to build up, just another 10 years, just let us clear this stagnation, we need to open up more" and that can lead to even worse things like the kind of decay and rot that claimed the USSR. They need very steady hands at the very top for the next 5 years at least.
There's a real risk of hesitancy because of how the US has set up dominoes to strangle the B&R for example so I hope 2030 is set in stone as far as possible because by then China's military will be reasonably modernized, enough to likely stand up to the US very effectively, a lot of tech will have caught up, independence on semi-conductors could be a reality, etc.
The best question was, do they even have some goal in mind with all those investments
I'd say several broadly speaking about the bourgeoisie, corporations, the US state:
- AI controlled robot armies that never disobey the bourgeoisie and imperialist state and can be called upon to put down any insurrection guaranteeing perpetual rule and ability to inflict anything they want on the population
- Removing the power of the proletariat's labor. If humans aren't working they can't strike, robots won't strike. They envision that they can just fire most of the population, get rid of them somehow and just use this to continue to profit and live at the top backed by their robot armies and police. They don't have a Marxist understanding of profit and are the generation who swallowed the lies their grandfathers made up for the common people and believe in them themselves. Problem for us is by the time their rate of profit collapses and they all start eating each other good chance at least half of us are dead via social or not so social murder.
- Even if they don't believe that fever dream it is at the very least a labor discipline tool. They can use the threat of automation to discipline labor into lower wages, less benefits, no unions, etc. They very much want to discipline labor right now with the state of the world as their little capitalist world hegemony is showing cracks. They want to nip a new rise of socialism in the bud and are very attuned to polls showing the popularity of populist leftist policies and openness to the word socialism.
- Deranged greed that sees it as an infinite profit generation engine that can genuinely out-think and out-perform human labor and will send their quarterly lines up up up up!
- A belief it will lead to AGI or something big (some sort of automated unstoppable hacking tool for instance that they salivate deploying on the rest of the world) and that if they let China beat them on this it's game over forever for capitalism and the western bourgeoisie so it's a cost to bear in that war against China
- An odd-ball plot to stockpile tons of chips and computer parts ahead of a war with China that causes supply from China and province of China Taiwan to be cut off to the west. The bubble pops, the war goes off, and oh look warehouses full of supplies to fill our needs while we desperately spin up production in the US, India, etc. Enough anyways for business needs as John and Sarah who want new laptops can go ahead and pay $3500 for something that was $600 before the war as far as they care so long as business can be kept running. One could say this is an interesting idea. Because if they do go ahead and build all the power plants they're talking about there is your power right there for some war-time re-industrialization to fight China as well.
For these things the bourgeoisie are willing to sacrifice much. I still think it's probably a bubble because they won't get near their goals anytime soon and someone big is going to call it and the confidence of the whole thing will be shaken and collapse (AI won't collapse and will continue to be developed and invested in as a promising thing for those aforementioned but many of the big companies will go belly up and it won't be this whole frenzy that distorts every power market and RAM and memory and so on).
Of course this person is the last person anyone should listen to on this as they're the late-comer shovel-seller at a gold rush so of course they're going to say it's still on no matter what and don't particularly care about lofty larger goals or necessarily understand them as they'll tell you their product is magic if it'll make it sell more.
Section 230 repeal is game over.
No more VPNs because they're liable for CSAM, terrorism, death threats, copyright abuse, etc. Even if they're off-shore and dare to thumb their noses at the US their domestic hosting partners will drop them out of liability concerns themselves. This is a terrifying unraveling of the internet as we knew it. Far more drastic than the death of blogs and forums and the rise of centralized social media. Far more drastic than even AI spam washing over everything and making real content hard to find.
There really are no alternatives waiting in the wings. You're not going to be able to torrent blurays over L2P or Tor. You're not going to be able to watch streaming videos with friends. For a while you'll be able to use Canadian servers, maybe Mexico (don't know what their laws are like) until they pass similar laws and tier one ISPs start throttling that type of traffic into/out of the US.
The boot is finally here, the death of the open internet will occur if that passes. Total narrative control. Social media companies seized by the throat by the US government, either cooperate in censoring what they want or they actually hold you accountable for everything your users do. Have good users? Here are some fed infiltrators and zionist intelligence companies who are going to spam you with illegal stuff and report it to us so you'll be done anyways.
They don't do that there? I mean not open and inspect but inspect outside. In the US all pieces of mail are photographed for tracking people down after the fact.
Anyways as mail sorting is done automatically with computers blocking mailed payments to their address would be beyond trivial. Just have machines sort it straight to MI6 or the London Police or a special naughty bin. True I suppose people could use re-mailer services though those are kind of hard to find, kind of expensive, and most of them are for package forwarding for people buying from abroad so not the types of companies who would resist pressure on a front like this as this group of people would be more trouble than they're worth making up a fraction of their business.
Gun nuts are largely reactionary cowards. They see a group of well armed people with automatic weapons, armor, they assume they're cops or at the very least that they can't take them and will be killed so would never engage. There are occasionally exceptions that are nihilistic mass shooter types who would be willing to kill the feds but they usually tend to hunker down so unless they burst into the home fortress of one of those types it's not likely to happen.
Thing is ICE can't go into homes without warrants as I understand it. Which is why most of their stuff happens in driveways, at schools, outside in various places, workplace raids, etc. So their chances of running into and disturbing a burrowed in like a tick extremist with a siege mentality and heavy weapons and a willingness to use them to kill feds is very, very low compared to even normal cops responding to domestic violence calls. Sure over years of time they'll probably eventually try and traffic stop a Sov-Cit type who opens fire and kills one ICE agent but then gets themselves and their family in the car riddles with hundreds of semi-auto rounds in the response from their teammates.
Very few Americans ever dare to kill cops unless their backs are literally against a wall and they're convinced there is no way out. A normal reactionary gun nut would put their guns down because they are a citizen and respect ICE and expect that they'll be processed and released and thus have a way out. That is they expect that they'll be treated fairly.
US: I am the law
(Or at least the "rules based order" which the US keeps promoting over international law. Their rules that is.)
"It's just an Indian summer"Let me guess, it also had a checked off box next to "kill CEO" and one beneath the pluck eye brows one saying "destroy evidence" which was unchecked. Strangely beneath that one but checked was one labeled "get food at McDonalds, linger around and look at cameras and the manager giving them a clear look of my face to taunt authorities". It also unsurprisingly I'd bet had "do communism" with two checks next to it! What a fiend!
I'm not an expert here but I'm pretty sure whoever owns that tower (or the station broadcasting on it anyways) has a responsibility to send a radio engineer if you complain about this kind of interference and try and offer you some sort of solution like ferrite chokes on your headphone cable or more drastic measures. They might at the end shrug and say there's nothing they can do but I believe they're required to investigate and attempt to remediate it.
Not like capitalists don't just straight up murder people who don't fit in under their "system". 1 million dead in Indonesia alone, millions more in Korea, Vietnam, Europe, Africa, Latin America, etc. So we're the bad guys for instead of straight up murdering problem people trying to restore or create a barbarous system giving them treatment and attempting to change them but they're just fine for just murdering or if you're LUCKY institutionalizing you, drugging you without consent, saying your problems which stem from an abusive, alienating, atomizing capitalist society are on YOU (gas-lighting), and at the worst end lobotomizing you if you're truly too inconvenient.
I was worried Paramount/Skydance would buy it up as I saw that as worse given how they're most interested in making nakedly fascist slop compared to even the rest of the American competition and anything that punts Zaslav out of power is a good thing for media overall I think. This does give Netflix a much needed DEEP IP catalog of both existing shows/movies they can stream as well as IP universes they can make content for. One of their bigger problems competing with HBO, Disney, and the networks was they all had vaults of content they could slop out to nostalgic consumers (I'm guilty of that too) at very little cost and they could do reboots and sequels and so on while Netflix was stuck building from the ground up.
But who knows maybe they'll mismanage it and go down in flames. Should be interesting at least and maybe they'll give us a few quality pieces of content before they get bored trying to prove they're alright to the audience and industry and go back to turning the screws on everything to squeeze max profit out of it.
I have to wonder what the play here is. Jack mentions what the US did under Nixon drawing down to gather its strength before springing back onto the world stage to overwhelm and destroy its opposition and reclaim its crown as hegemon and that definitely seems a possibility. I have to wonder about time-scale.
Is the US doing this specifically with the knowledge of climate change and how it plans to continue to accelerate the climate collapse which will hit China much harder than the US, will take India out of the picture, and will leave climate fortress US which has already drawn its cards/strength close to it in a great position to strike out and force bending of the knee from ailing other parts of the world? Russia is also going to be in a relatively strong position in terms of their situation under climate change compared to say western/southern/eastern Europe and nothing to say compared to west Asia/Middle East and India. Which might track with Trump's attempted rapprochement with them. Because I will never believe the US is going to just cede power peacefully to a new order. But retreating temporarily, gathering as much strength as they can, fortifying their own position, biding their time then planning to strike out some time in say the latter half of this century as climate change is really hitting home seems very much US style. Of course subversion would continue during that, attempts to undermine the CPC, attempts to fragment China, sew separatism, and yes even more exotic means like biological warfare attacks on crops and people that are just careful enough that they can't be definitively linked to the US. One can only hope this plan goes awry but under this idea of using climate change as a weapon there would be a necessity to still secure certain resources, minerals and such critical for high technology, to subjugate or ensnare African nations, some LatAm nations within their web of control to deny them to China.
Of course this could all be a big feint just to consolidate a few more key pieces of control and then in the 2030s (much sooner than waiting for climate change to really hit) they turn the screws on China economically using their control of waterways, key transit points, land trade, etc to force them to deal with the US gatekeeper to trade with the rest of the world.
Sadly west is already two moves ahead on the chess-board and continuing to make plays and set up pieces for their advantage. Even many of the planners of keeping China down use phrases like "10 years behind" because they don't think they can stop Chinese development, they just desire to keep it behind them enough to allow them freedom of movement and supremacy.
By controlling global oil (Venezuela being next), commanding control of global maritime shipping passageways, having successfully defused the belt and road by gaining key control along it at several points to block China's use of it in the event of sanctions/blockade/war, and by doing what Trump is doing with tariffs to reshape debt, consumption, geopolitical alliances and loyalties, monetary supplies, they are still placing China in a precarious position which chip independence on its own cannot break. That and their moving ahead with getting their euro-vassals to tariff and decouple from China being not far in the future in my opinion and they can exert a lot of pressure on China that isn't simply denying them the latest chips for AI slop and such.
