The usual propagandists who've downplayed the seriousness of climate change will be deployed to downplay the seriousness of any "side effects" and the same frothing reactionaries who've denied climate change so far will line up to be first in line to say we have to deploy this to save ourselves and to call those against it hypocrites for being against climate change and against their "fix".

    I fear they going to use NSPM-7 to go after PSL and use the signs PSL often provides for protests and everything else as proof positive they are in fact antifa HQ and try and do a RICO type thing where they hold them responsible for all violence at every protest. Seems stuff like this is a prelude to that, building a kind of case. The most insulting thing may be they'll call PSL "anarchists".

    Fact is they're the only thing close to an organization even tangentially related to real protests (not DNC astro-turf) to really go after. Though perhaps that would be at ends with their real purpose here which is declaring antifa a real but nebulous group so they can charge anyone as part of it. PSL's problem I suppose for that role is that they have clear membership structure and duties so it would be a bit more difficult. Hopefully they flail around and do nothing but intimidate some folks.

  • Yeah it seemed obvious they were never actually going to wage a full war. At most capture the capital, turn it into a green-zone, prop up a puppet (thank you nobel committee for glazing suspect number one for them and prepping them for international recognition as legitimate leader), arm that puppet, and either stay around in very minimal form or withdraw entirely and turn into a support force for local fascist compradors. It accomplishes the task of plunging Venezuela into trouble for years potentially, allows the US to declare oil that's not produced by the puppet regime as funding "narco-terrorists" and either prevent its sale or direct all profits of it to their puppet.

  • I fully expect them to be even more brutal and sadistic than the IOF. Maybe not in terms of torturing captives but more in the way of shamelessly bombing and machine gunning areas with civilians and declaring them terrorists after the fact and because they're armed forces from Muslim majority countries they'll get away with it even better than the IOF and because none of them are held to the idea of "only democracy in the middle east, most moral army" like the propaganda tries to do for the IOF the media will just lean into it months after the offensive starts and say "see how barbarous these brown people are to each other? this is why we have to support isra-hell (because they're white and virtuous and good)".

    It really is a best case scenario for the empire and pissrael because it takes the heat off them and also means no more dead zionists which is unpopular at home, instead they get Muslim pawns to carry out the genocide and when the courts and history get around to looking at it they'll all be hopping up and down pointing at the crimes of these Muslim armies and say it proves there was no racial-religious animus and the whole thing is "complicated"[tm].

  • The final version of Windows 10 is 22H2. There is no 24H2. That's a Windows 11 feature build. Windows 10 has been feature locked since late 2022 basically. It's just been security updates which now end without ESU. (Specifically with the final security update installed your version should read 10.0.19045.6456 though major version will still say 22H2)

    That said if something is badly broken you should be able to do an in-place upgrade install of Windows 10 from the last released version iso which you can find linked on the mas site. You just make sure it is one of the home edition ISOs then run it from within Windows, should be an option for upgrade or repair or something and you do that rather than clean install (which would wipe your drive).

    I have seen some cases where OEM's install broken versions of Windows 10 Home that need this kind of in-place upgrade install to use MAS.

    Be careful and read what the prompts say during the process to avoid any mistakes. Your data should be safe as long as you do an upgrade or repair install.

    If you already use a Microsoft account and are fine with signing into that on your local computer then for this year it doesn't really matter I suppose but this way you can just take care of it and not think of it again in a year.

  • The thing is we've crossed a real river here in terms of retribution against political opponents. The Democrats went after Trump using the law and actually arrested him and went after people around him. The thing is they missed, they weren't serious about it and didn't land more than a scratch but it's angered and freaked out the Republicans who are doing a little bit of the inverse against their opponents and are convinced that if they lose power they'll be subject to more of the same from Democrats so have an extra strong incentive to rig things and do everything to stay in power so that power can't be used against them.

    However, elections are an almost certainty, the military would likely get involved and arrest or shoot anyone trying seriously to prevent elections taking place because they're that important as a relief valve.

    But those elections are likely to be even more crooked than usual. Voter roll purges, ballot invalidation, gerrymandering, etc, etc. Taken to new levels IF NECESSARY. But it's important to understand this too isn't new. Bush 2000 only won because Florida rigged the vote by invalidating/questioning ballots and the Supreme Court stopped the count. So we're 25 years beyond election rigging being normal and USians getting mildly upset but basically going back to brunch because eh what can they do.

    Liberals and chuds will both be in hysterics about election interference and whoever loses will have a large chunk of their base not accept it.

  • If you mean porn sites or reddit or whatever demanding an ID because of porn content those companies have no way of verifying who you are or your real IP, all they know is where your connection request is coming from, what that IP is and maybe things like your timezone. That's all. They aren't in a position to really verify off anything but IP address.

    Google and Apple on their phones especially (not so much Macs and Chromebooks or Ipads) have multiple good ways of strongly determining with high reliability exactly where you are because of cellular networks, because of GPS and aGPS, because they have your billing info, etc.

  • china has clearly stated that they intend to continue supplying rare earths to non-military sectors. that means that any western RE industry would still be competing with china's products for consumer goods (i.e. they will not be able to compete and will thus derive no profit from this end of the sector, unlike the situation during china's RE rise).

    We both know the US would sanction Chinese exports, prevent western companies (US+EU plus assorted Pacific vassals) from buying Chinese ones and force them to buy the western ones or at least slap a tariff on the Chines ones to make the western ones competitive. Heck they'd probably threaten the biggest private western consumers to throw their money and weight behind getting this running ASAP regardless of how dirty and dangerous it is. So while the rest stands, this isn't a real objection. Western government and military will be a captive customer and as their capacity will likely take a while to get large enough to even service western weapons makers plus tech companies I don't think they need to worry about competing on the open market with China.

    More realistically I think the west will set up an elaborate scheme of shell companies and buyers to route rare earths to their war industry. They'll have their tech companies and tech companies in pliable countries like India, Europe, and whoever else wants to suck up to the US invent production capacity, purchase the rare earths for purported civilian uses then divert them from the manufacturer. For example say Nvidia (more realistically it would be some private company in India, Europe, Africa that they cut a deal with). They just ship them to the plant, then ship out only 10% of the wafers they claim they're making, shipping the rest onwards mixed in with their actual product through a series of intermediaries. The US is very good at this. It will raise costs quite a bit but China has very limited visibility into US/western supply chains due to among other things not being an empire of hackers like the US, not controlling SWIFT and monetary flows, and so on. The west will use this to build up a stock-pile. It will impede their abilities if China is willing to stop supplies to the west entirely to carry on a sustained 10 year war against China for example but give them enough ability to stockpile a reserve to launch an initial attack and sustain some fighting for a while at a moderate cadence and moderate to low intensity.

    It definitely is enough to make the west wary of starting a war against China next year or the year after but they're schemers and they'll go to incredible lengths to get around this.

  • I have bad news: Apple and Google both know where you really are.

    Unless you're using a VPN provided by a wifi gateway you're connected to because they provision the VPN on your phone they know your actual IP and can use that.

    Worse because phones universally have GPS and aGPS provided by cell phone tower pings they know for a fact where you are geographically located down to 20 yards. Maybe they'll half-ass it but maybe the law includes provisions or maybe they simply don't want to risk fines.

    On top of that they probably have your billing address and your credit card company is happy to confirm your zip code.
