  • I did make up my mind on this before Reddit was invented, so a swing and a miss there.

It's reductive because nobody wants to read a 600-page treatise in a comments section, which is why I forgive your equally reductive hand-waving about unspecified other faiths. The word "indoctrination" is key here. Teaching your child philosophy is not indoctrination. The abuse is choosing for them before they are sufficiently complex consciousnesses to choose for themselves. This occurs most commonly, and is most socially acceptable when it comes to gender and religion.

  • Religious indoctrination is child abuse.Sending your kids to places of worship or a religious school, or telling them "this is our religion", is child abuse. This includes christofascists and oppressed minorities.

I'm on the fence as to whether telling your child they are a girl or a boy is similarly harmful.

  • You know what's even more of an... interesting choice?

Using precision-guided munitions to destroy a school full of little girls when there was a military target right next door.

  • I'm sorry to hear that. Some parents are worse than useless, which means you get to make your own connections with people you choose. Is the money in the will enough to buy your obedience to someone who actively makes you depressed?

  • It's good too always bear this in mind when asking this question: Sophie's choice is a thought experiment. Meaning that the perfect conditions where a parent has to choose one child to live based on their personal preference, don't exist. If both kids are in danger of being hit by a bus, the parent will grab both of them. Or if the parent has only one arm, they will grab the one who's more in danger, or even get themselves in the way to save both kids.In less dramatic circumstances, the parent might choose to give more money to kid 1 because they think they need it more, or because they think they will manage it better. It doesn't mean they love kid 1 more than kid 2.I'm a parent. I have infinite love for both of my kids. Love doesn't play favourites or get into mind games. I love them differently because they are two different people. Treating them exactly the same would lead to unfairness, because their needs are not exactly the same. That applies to the 'who do I save?' scenario too, because invariably, one of them will be in more danger/be more possible to save than the other one in that moment.

  • Nobody would, you're right. And yet a whole lot of people do hate ICE. It's a thinker, that one, for sure.

  • They're all the same person for sure. I'm not sure if that person is you though.

  • Of course he has. The law is made to protect him.

  • I'm in complete agreement

  • I read some analysis on this in the guardian, it predicted this would happen, because the police have limited resources and can only follow up one of the two charges. This charge is chosen because there is far more likely to be incontrovertible evidence, probably in the form of paper trails etc. Whereas proving he raped children decades ago relies on witness testimony, which is far easier for his very expensive (taxpayer-funded, mind) lawyers to talk down in court. If this cunt sees a single day in prison I call that a win.

  • I think people attacking you as "pro-genocide" is exactly as reasonable as the German standard disallowing comparison of Nazism, which is funny.

The existence of a field of study which purports to compare genocide doesn't validate your assertion that Israel is less evil than the third Reich. I still don't think you can make this point.

The German law around speech comparing anything to Nazism sounds complex and subtle. I would argue that it's a matter for the courts to decide, rather than for unqualified moderators to overcomply in advance.

  • what [Netenyahu's Israel is] doing is still not on the same level of evil as Nazi Germany.

Very difficult to say this for sure. Some of the acts we've seen are on the same level, frankly. And how could you possibly measure this, objectively?

I don't think this can be argued meaningfully, and so should be removed from your argument.

    As to the German law:

    • Is that applicable here on Lemmy?
    • Is it up to the mods to interpret German law and apply it?

  • Thank you for the assurance, but I hope you'll understand if I remain sceptical that seeing a member of your group attacked could somehow embolden anyone.

  • Here's why I tolerate violence towards fascists (and nobody else, including child molesters, serial rapists, etc.)

Fascists condone violence against groups they fear. That includes you and I, as people who are not fascists.

Fascist rhetoric is insidious and makes sense to a lot of people, because a lot of people like their thinking done for them.

Fascists, left unchallenged, will gradually take over large enough sections of society to gain power. We've seen this happen many many times in history, not just in Nazi Germany. We're seeing it in real time now.

Words are not enough to dissuade the fascists, nor are prison sentences. Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in prison. Fascists have stock answers to terminate thought on every issue. They ignore nuance and play to their supporters' prejudices.

Fascists need to be afraid to be fascists, that is the only way to suppress them. Tolerating them leads to them taking power. Unlike sex offenders/serial killers/fraudsters etc who do what they do for individual reasons, the fascist's goal is to twist the social narrative and seize power through othering of groups who will eventually be exterminated. Criminal sanctions are too difficult to bring to bear on fascism, as they (fascists) aren't hindered by prison sentences, in fact they often play the victim and use their "persecution" as evidence that their chosen outgroup (Jews/immigrants/Tutsi/whatever) is controlling the legal system.

The answer? They need to be afraid to be fascists, shunned by society and in fear of their personal safety if they attempt to spread their message. It's critical for us all to perpetuate this fear. By punching Nazis, or tolerating those that do, at the very least.
