  • On the mac, there was Toast (it burns), and Nero had an ad that said that they "Eat Toast for Breakfast."

What a great era for software branding.

  • Back in college, we had "Random Standard Time" where midnight was midnight, but it wasn't "tomorrow" until 5am.

  • They’d never agree to share the jet.

  • Also to not fall for pitifully obvious scams.

  • Yeah. That used to be the case in the US, but it’s illegal now.

  • Got a Minimal Phone for a similar reason.

  • IDK what OP is even going on about. This just seemed relevant.

  • I read "Poorly Made in China by Paul Midler. In it, he recounts many of his stories working with manufacturers in China. In one part, he talks about a time he just drove off the highway to a random factory to see what they made. They were very accommodating and welcomed him in. They happily showed him their wares and even gave him some samples hoping to maybe get another American buyer.

They made little figurines of Santa that said Feliz Navidad. They didn't even know what it said and assumed it was English when presenting it to the author who is American. They probably got the molds from somewhere, found a supplier of raw materials, got some buyers, and went to town. At no point did they know or even care what it was they were making.

With that context, it's easy to see how this kind of thing can happen.

  • I mean, I buy stuff off eBay a lot, and it's often from small mom-and-pop shops. I needed new ribbon for my typewriter recently and ended up getting it from a store that just sells ink ribbons. They have an off-eBay presence too.

  • Used OKCupid from ~2008 to 2016. Maybe 10 or so 1-2 month relationships in that time. Plenty of first dates. Then met my wife. Married in '23.

I've heard it's a fucking nightmare now though. OKCupid used to be all about the profiles and questions, but soon after we stopped using it, it turned into a Tinder clone with just photos. Add in a healthy dose of AI, and I'm sure it's a very unpleasant time.

  • Is that the real smile? I know he was smiling, but I've seen other versions where it's not nearly this pronounced. Did someone tweak it?
