  • To be fair - the ruins are prime real estate for some wild animals. The goose was there first and if I'm not mistaken had already started laying eggs when Tristan and Isolde came back for this season.

    And it's true that the owls seem to have seen "chicks" first and therefore not identified them as dangerous or potential prey. Tristan actually taking food to their nest is kind of cute. In this case I prefer and kind of admire his fatherly ambitions. They are definitely prepared to take care of their own chicks. I have seen at least three eggs.

  • An Update to the family situation. I don't think I'll make an extra post for it. It's not a 100% happy ending but it's not as bad as one might have expected with predators involved. And the owls displayed some unexpected behaviour.

    Over time Isolde started attacking the goose, sometimes making her leave the nest. At first the guys at EGE thought it might have lead to an unsuccesful brood. But the chicks were only late. A few days late/later the chicks started hatching. The last chick took its time and mother goose had to stay another night. They have a video on YouTube about this "Night of Decisions".

    Isolde started another attack and the goose left her chicks that followed the old strategy of staying as still as possible. Isolde flew back to her nest, mother goose returned but wasn't happy as Tristan was keeping watch from the other side of the ruins.

    And half an hour later Isolde attacked again - mother goose. During the fight two chicks fell out of the nest, the goose leaves again, two chicks are now in the greens around the nest. Isolde inspects the nest, the goose chicks, nibbles on some eggshells. And Isolde decides to leave again. Meanwhile one of chicks fell down to the ground of the castle ruins. A second chick soon follows.

    Tristan is being a good provider and returns with snacks. Isolde flies to the goose nest again and leaves after a while. Later Tristan is taking a snack rat over to the goose chicks. The chicks aren't a fan and the lack of interest in rat makes Tristan leave - with the rat.

    In the morning the goose returns, warming the chicks in the nest. Then it's time to leave. The cameras don't capture all of it. Mum jumps down, chicks follow (of the chicks in the nest one didn't make it - reasons unknown). The geese try to find a way out of the ruins without interference.

    Das ganze hatte schon einen ernsten Hintergrund. Liebig hat vorher auch gegen Transpersonen und queere Menschen Stimmung gemacht.

    Maßgeblich seien Aussagen aus der nicht allzu fernen Vergangenheit. Noch 2023 warnte Liebich vor "Transfaschismus", zuvor hatte er queere Menschen als "Parasiten der Gesellschaft" beschimpft. Laut MDR stützt auch der Saalekreis seinen Berichtigungsantrag auf solche Aussagen. Dem Bericht zufolge enthält die Antragsbegründung unter anderem Auszüge aus einer Rede Liebichs von 2023 sowie Social-Media-Posts.

    Mit der Provokation wollte er wohl zum einen den Ampel-Gesetzgeber sowie trans Personen lächerlich machen.

    Es hat lange genug gedauert, bis das Selbstbestimmungsgesetz in dieser Form endlich da war und Betroffenen diese deutlich einfachere, mit weniger Übergriffigkeiten versehene Möglichkeit gegeben hat. Wenn das Gesetz nun von Menschen absichtlich für andere Zwecke missbraucht wird, besteht die Gefahr, dass Änderungen kommen, die wieder zu einer Verschlechterung der Lage für Betroffene führt. Liebig kann man zudem eine Agenda unterstellen, die sich die Abschaffung dieses Gesetzes zum Ziel gesetzt hat.

    Zum anderen schien damit der Versuch verbunden zu sein, seine fällige Haftstrafe in einer Justizvollzugsanstalt für Frauen statt in einem Männergefängnis zu verbüßen.

    Warum sollten Frauen Liebich ausgesetzt werden? Es geistert auch gerne der Gedanke herum, dass ein Frauengefängnis "angenehmer" für einen Aufenthalt wäre.

    Deine Frage, ob Liebig jetzt besser im Gefängnis behandelt, weil momentan als Frau eingetragen kann man schon verneinen, aber das gilt aus einem anderen Grund:

    Kurz vor dem Haftantritt im August 2025 tauchte Liebich jedoch unter und ist seitdem flüchtig.

    Same-ish. The exceptions are birthdays of the older generation and the inevitable funerals.

    I scroll through all a few times a day (...)

    I try to do that only twice or thrice per day. Usually I combine it with looking at news/reports and maybe post or comment. But I tend to avoid fights or communities that are more about drama than actual content or analyses.

    I wouldn't say I've disengaged from politics, but I feel as a citizen any vague notion of influence a regular person had in the direction of our leaders has been crushed. There doesn't seem to be much point in interacting with our officials, and other than waiting to vote in the upcoming primary, I don't know much that would impact my feelings on things. There's no Republican I need to pay attention to. It's all lies, and any I'd consider decent left during Trump's first term. I don't like a lot of the Democrats either, as they seem ineffectual, but with our voting system, the primary seems the only spot where I need to focus on making an actual judgement on who would be decent.

    I feel you. News from the US are disheartening and sad most of the time. But I chose to believe that people can still make a difference.

    I'm really unhappy about some developments in Germany and how our politicians are dealing with it. So sharing news or talking to people irl and fighting some of the misinformation or straight up lies is something that I can do.

    No worries! That’s not how I understood your question. I hope I didn't come off as impolite. Guess we're having our first moment where cultural differences play into communication (and me not being a native speaker might add to that). Germany is considered a low context culture. The US is leaning more towards a higher context culture. So Germans tend to take most spoken/written communication at face value, while people from the US tend to also rely on unspoken clues. If you ask someone from Germany how they're doing - expect an honest, potentially detailed answer. 🫣😂

    We have people do some crazy things. Someone dropped off a bat after hours and put it in an Amazon box. They didn't leave it at the front door either, but off to the side of the building near the parking lot, coincidentally where the packages are usually dropped off, so not only did this poor bat sit out overnight in the cold, but no one grabbed it first thing in the morning because everyone thought it was just a routine delivery of supplies.

    Well-meaning and making smart decisions doesn't always go hand in hand. I hope your poor bat did well after its delayed delivery.

    I am glad your little buddy just needed some warmth and you were there to provide it.

    It's funny coming from a family that once spoke a different German dialect that I've never thought much about Germany still having different dialects.

    Guess it is the "missing" contact to relatives in Germany. Iirc the ancestors of Pennsylvania Dutch moved fairly early to the States. If you have no ties there's not much reason to think of it.

    Two people from my mother's side moved to the US in the early 1920s. The family kept in touch for as long as the first generation was still alive. Their children quickly lost interest. That was before the internet made communication easier. It would be almost impossible to keep up with family abroad after another hundred+ years.

    It's been a real embarrassment that ongoing politics around the world (...) Every day makes me more grateful we can just chat about cool birds and their support staff here and crack some jokes,

    The ongoing politics and Media coverage are exhausting and to a certain degree are meant to keep us distracted. Keeping people enganged in (online) fights is a strategy. Thankfully we don't have to play along and instead can focus on the important things, like owls :)

    Your bat friend is very ferocious and cute looking. Do you still have it or did you release it or take it somewhere?

    I did call a bat hotline and found out who would be qualified in my area to check the bat's health if necessary. And I found someone online who is working with bats and in his opinion the bat in the pics looked healthy and alert enough to release itself. I left her a way to escape from the garage and the nesting box I kept her in, in case she felt like leaving. And she was gone after a few hours.

    I wouldn't really be allowed to keep a bat, a wild animal and member of an endangered species. From your work at the rescue you're familiar with how stupid well-meaning people without proper education can act. If it had needed medical attention or other care I would have brought it to a suitable place.

  • I've occasionally looked at the French community weekly thread when pseudo mentions something about superbowl and it seemed similar, just about 4 or 5 people just saying one sentence. I guess a lot of you are used to communicating online only in English?

    My home instance is feddit.org and it depends on the community. Some posts in bigger communities draw a lot of attention, others have barely an upvote. Admins/Mods are volunteers with limited time and had to place some boundaries. One main rule is that only English and German should be used. Most people are from German speaking countries and it's expected that they at least are able to read and understand English. While some of our communities favour English most posts and comments are indeed in German.

    I found a new online multilanguage dictionary that seems great at listing owl names in other languages to help me find new international content that been yielding good results,

    Do you mind sharing? While I have a mild interest in languages, I have a (language teacher) friend who is very much into birding and plants. Including learning the Latin names. She would be thrilled to find such a tool.

    My family is Pennsylvania Dutch, and my grandparents could speak their language and I got to see them do business with the Amish people here, and it felt so alien to see them speaking a whole other language when we can't.

    In Germany it's kind of similar with strong local dialects. Frisian and "Plattdüütsch" seem to have fallen out of favour with time. A lot of younger people simply haven't learned to speak them.

    We do have the difficulty making smalltalk other than grumbling, so we did inherit that!

    I have been surprised over the years to see more of the commentors here are women than I expected. Probably not an equal portion of overall subscribers, but as far as people that actually leave comments, it might be fairly close. I'm always curious what our overall demographics are.

    A lot of women simply don't disclose being female. Women experience a great deal of harrassment on the internet when they are recognizable as women. Compared to men they are attacked with a higher frequency and a level of hatred that most men never experience.

    It's a good sign that women feel save enough to be so open.

  • The slowness is a little better now that I know it isn't me.

    It definitely isn't you! There are so many reasons we don't know or don't think of that might lead to less interaction. For example: I know a few people who observe lent for spiritual reasons. And social media consumption now often is part of things they avoid during lent.

    We just don't have a large enough userbase to even out whatever causes the slump for a lot of people here.

    One reason I'm still on Reddit. It allows me to drop hints about the Fediverse and Lemmy on occasion. I know they will f'up even more in the future. Hopefully this will bring some friendly people to this side of the internet.

    I do wish we had a more passionate commenting culture by now. Or at least some more on fun topics. I know people are still here, because they're all over the grumpy news and politics threads! 😅

    Even the Germans here aren't reliable. They might not be good at smalltalk and fun conversations (speaking of cultural differences) but usually you can count on them to give their opinion - even if you didn't ask for it 😅 Well, the grumpy news and politics threads are their natural habitat in a way. Germans are World Champion Complainers.

    but there's always people saying they want politic and US news free spaces, but I like to think we have something for everyone here and very minimal politics, so where are they at?!

    We need to drop proverbial breadcrumps to lead them here... only half joking. I feel that the focus of people in the fediverse is on IT, data security, and politics (of course).

    There's been a poll in one of the German communities and it's interesting to see who frequents and especially interacts with the community. It's biased of course, I don't expect that many people to answer questions in a poll who only lurk and don't interact.

    Mostly men, IT, often gratuated university, socially "conscious" - meaning more left leaning in their political views, aware of social issues, inclusive.

    I'm still having fun, but I post here to interact with you all.

    And you're creating a very friendly, informative, and welcoming group. You can only lay the foundations and you did a good job. I enjoy it.

    I'm excited to be going back to the animals. Still waiting for my rabies titer so I can handle those animals, so hopefully that comes soon so I can hold raccoons and foxes. Also still need to finalize some ideas for my owl station at open house.

    I do believe that. I'd be looking forward to that too! There's almost no rabies left in Germany. The only wild animals that occasionally can spread it are bats. Like the bat from the rabies copypaste. So of course that's the one animal I found two weeks ago when we still had snow outside. Poor thing was on the ground in broad daylight and I only registered it because it was screaming at the dog and me. I brought in into the garage (yes, wearing protective gloves) to give it some shelter and that led to me learning more about bats and who to contact. The little critter, a common pipistrelle, is fine. Warming up (though not to me 😁) did help.

    I got diagnosed with pretty bad sleep apnea in January. I was falling asleep at work and getting scarily tired while driving, and I just haven't had much energy

    So good to hear you got diagnosed! That's the first step though it must have been scary - especially becoming so tired while driving. Hopefully it will soon work out and you get your energy back!

    Bingo. Die Regierungsmaschine ist auch ein Symbol und daher ein mögliches Ziel. Sie ist zum Schutz vor Raketenangriffen am BER geparkt. Das wurde vorher alles offiziell gemeldet. Und es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass dieser Flieger zum Schutz im entfernteren Ausland geparkt wird.

  • I always get bummed sharing something I think is awesome and it feels like nobody sees it. I get so bored posting all this stuff and nobody comments.

    It seems people are also busy around this time of year. Please, don't feel sad - we appreciate your work! Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of lurkers who avoid posting/commenting. And even up- and downvotes seem to be worse on Lemmy. I guess people tend to shy away from it, when they realise that some other people can find out who voted and how.

    I'm back in action on the 15th to get a head start before the new volunteers come in April.

    That's great! I bet they love having you there. Still owlthusiastic and coming with so much knOWLedge.
