Ask Lemmygrad@lemmygrad.ml•what happens if capitalism collapses without revolution? (or, what is barbarism?)
21·6 hours agoWell, I assume you mean global capitalism in its current form? Because it has already happened in some regions. Libya for example. Total state collapse. Open air slave markets. etc. Now this was not caused by the mechanisms you are talking about, it was caused by imperialist aggression, but the result is largely the same. A breakdown of order, and a region that is ruled by whoever has the most ability to inflict violence on others. It is the proto-state.
The difference is that when collapse happens globally it is much worse. Libya can still import food from an existing global economy for example. If global capitalism collapses it will not be even or all at once. But the most impactful result will be the collapse of the global food system. AES countries will need to embrace many Juche principles to survive this period. But they can survive. They’d just need to be self sufficient.
Non-socialist countries would very quickly collapse into warlordism as a famine sweeps the globe. Most food is grown far from where it is consumed, and without the supply chain to move food to where it is needed most major cities would be graveyards within weeks. The population would collapse to pre-industrial levels outside of the socialist nations that have prepared for such an event (China, DPRK, etc).
Luckily, nuclear weapons aren’t as big a concern as you might think in this scenario. While nukes would no longer be controlled by stable nations it is actually very hard to make a nuke go off without the codes. So some random warlord can’t just launch ICBMs on a whim. You’d need a lot of technical expertise to pull it off, and that implies a level of organization on par with a nation state anyway.
What needs to be understood is that the state is simply a more evolved version of a warlord, or a cartel. The organization that controls the monopoly on violence in a region. These proto-states have authority, but it is loosely enforced, and used largely for personal gain. As states evolve they move through stages of development. A band of raiders becomes a warlord state that becomes a kingdom and so on. As states get more complex their class dynamics shift and their institutions need to be more complex to match.
Barbarism is the reset back to the base state. If the system that underpins the state does not evolve, it does not stop the increase in complexity. You reach a point where the complexity of governance, and the class dynamics are such that the state becomes untenable. It cannot sustain itself.
At this point is when revolution by the newly resurgent class, be it the merchant class overthrowing a nobility, or the workers overthrowing those same merchants, can take root. If this revolution, the thing that would have enacted new institutions, and allowed for the state to become stable once more in its current conditions, fails to do this then the state remains stagnant. It does not evolve to meet the needs of its changing conditions, and instead reacts with violence and oppression (fascism) to try and hold on to its power. To prevent collapse. This does not work.
Fascism is an inherently unsustainable system, and so it runs its course. Then is either destroyed by external forces (WW2) or implodes in on itself. If there is no external stabilizing force like the Comintern, and Allies after WW2 then the state ceases to exist with nothing filling the void. You have a period of chaos and then natural proto-states begin to emerge as the cycle repeats itself.
This will always, without fail, result in a mass dying of humans. Because our technology is not what allows us to keep our population so high. Our systems are. Without human organization there is no way to sustain our population, and so we’d rapidly see a correction down to a much lower level through famine. The only places exempt from this as I said are nations that know this and have prepared for it. There is a reason China has the largest food reserves in the world, and is investing heavily in agriculture for example.
This would not be the end of humanity, but it would be a very dark chapter, and we would have to hope that the AES nations that already exist could lead the rest of the world’s survivors out of it into a long overdue socialist future.
Okay, then you just go see what China has to say and oh look at that Dinosaurs are real.
There’s nothing unhealthy about eating a donut. It would only be unhealthy if you ate a lot of them, and consistently.

17·8 hours agoI think USians talking about the great firewall is so funny because did the US not just do this whole song and dance where it had a hissy fit because China kinda sorta had a financial stake in Tiktok (not really using it for influence tho) and then forced it to sell to them? The only reason the US doesn’t have a great firewall is that American social media companies are dominant globally.
They put guys holding little mirrors on the moons surface so they could get a good picture that looks sparkly.

1·8 hours agoWell I didn’t do it because I thought it would be a popular decision. So I’m not surprised you and many others don’t like that I did. Gosh, maybe if I’d voted for Kid Killer Kamala instead she’d have won and we’d have a girl boss president right now! Too bad I’m never gonna do that. You just need to realize that I do not have the same goals as you. Maybe theres some minor overlap on social issues, but those are hardly the thing I care about most.

1·8 hours agobut this garbage that they violently cut loose is insane.
I’m starting to think you non-americans are just unaware of what America is like. Nothing I said is abnormal for an American. Going Skeetshooting, going to the range, etc are all normal activities that millions of Americans do regularly. If you own a gun and don’t practice with it then that’s just irresponsible. Not a single thing I said is illegal to do, or violent. That is just your own fantasy. And the idea that your going to do a “national peaceful shutdown” and that’s not going to be met with mass violence, at which point you will need the people who weren’t so naive to come protect you, is hilarious btw.

31·18 hours agoI once physically removed a still living bird from my cats clutches and set it free. I saw him get it. Birds are just fucking oblivious. Standing around pecking at the ground and not checking their surroundings.

11·19 hours agoI’m butthurt? You seem a lot more upset about this than I am. I literally told you to do whatever you want, but you can’t handle the fact I’m not gonna vote for your democrats lol. I wish I was a foreign asset. Then I wouldn’t have to live in this shit hole of a country. But yes, everyone who disagrees with you is a bot. Good job. You figured it out. Bee-boop. Em-Dash. etc.

22·22 hours agoSo basically you can’t handle the idea that there are people who don’t think voting is going to make a difference? Even when i say to do it if you want to? I’m not telling people not to vote. I’m just saying my opinion on it. And then on the guns thing you say basically exactly what I said verbatim but then act like your version is the more reasonable and mine is somehow “violent” in a way yours isn’t. Like what do you think “protecting yourself” in a worst case scenario would look like? It would look like a civil war. Do you have some fantasy that you’d somehow just be going it alone like rambo and wouldn’t need to pick a side? What exactly do you take issue with in regards to guns that I was saying?

31·23 hours agoAnd I don’t really see your let’s all hold hands and sing kumbayah until everything is fixed schtick as all that lovely either. The idea that we’re just going to have the entire working class united against capitalists is an ahistorical fantasy. There will be brownshirts, and whites, and counter revolutionaries.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Whats your opinion on touchscreen on laptop?
1·24 hours agoSo… it depends. If it’s a normal laptop I’m not SUPER interested in it but don’t hate it. I do use the track pad a lot so if that was messing up I could use the touch screen. But normally I won’t use it in laptop mode. The depends is a 2 in 1. If I can flip it over and use it as a tablet I will do that. How nice it is depends on software tho in that case. A nice gesture based experience like Gnome would be great. But I doubt I’d enjoy doing that on windows. I haven’t used windows in years but I imagine a touchscreen on it would be not very intuitive.
So the Framework Pro 13 annoys me since it can’t flip all the way around. I actually am considering making a cyberdeck with an existing framework 13 mainboard I have and a framework pro screen and making it into a tablet form factor but nice and thick with plenty of ports and maybe a CD player. I’d love something like that.

31·24 hours agoI wouldn’t categorize neo nazis as regular people personally, but to each their own. My point though was that if the state’s monopoly on violence ever truly falters then the racist down the street who has an AR can suddenly go fufill has fantasies. And the only thing that would stop him/her (probably him) is a Black Panther like organization that is also armed.

Ah okay. I was just taking issue with the idea that a few MB don’t matter. Thanks for expanding on your point. I’m very much pro-optimization got no real opinions on systemd tho.

Do you think they’d count that as vehicle deaths? It seems like emissions and pollution would be grouped together in their own environmental category. As it’s hard to say “This death was due to emissions from this specific thing’s emissions” rather than pollution in general.
