  • To be honest, this part makes me upset that we're so niche that people could even believe that. When people criticize wrestlers they don't say they have weak punch combinations. When people criticize teachers they don't say they waste too much time in the gym. When people criticize football players, they don't call them unathletic (usually). But somehow when it comes to communists, we get flak for the Clintons?! The CEOs?! Chuck Schumer?!?! Russia?!?!?!?!

    I hear this shit and I can't even have a conversation about it. It's so doomed to fail because you're not defending the thing itself. You're not even defending a straw man. You're defending a wheat field. It's so far removed from even beginning a conversation about it.

    You can short circuit the conversation "what do you think about market socialism? No, not really like China, I was thinking of Vietnam" and then they don't know Vietnam so it clarifies there's no real headway to be made so you can change subject/tune out their rant.

    The alternative would be to dig into how they've been personally victimized by the system. You'll never change someone's mind. So you'd, at best, open their eyes to the suffering they've endured and tell them that someone cares about it (it's not a capitalist). Alienated at work? The meeting Luigi's CEO was going to started on time. Health insurance? Rent? Mental health? Raising kids? Buying a house? No community? You as an evangelist, I believe, are capable of 1) sympathizing and 2) explaining how capitalism caused it. Even if they're grotesque, being grotesque doesn't stop them from suffering or open them to change upon being called grotesque. So if your goal is any kind of rehabilitation, a win, no matter how unlikely, starts with seeing their point of view and recognizing why it would suck.

  • Okay, how about this: I've never heard someone make a cogent argument about how communism actually leads to more poverty. It's just something about being less efficient than the market. But I've seen markets over and over fuck people over our of home, health, and community. More empty homes than homeless people. Meanwhile "I put the homeless person in a home now they're not homeless" has worked wonders.

    I've never seen a better litmus a tolerant society than not tolerating intolerant views. Separating inheritance from actions seems perfectly good and I've never seen someone say something convincing otherwise.

    I've seen the dumbest fucking arguments about science, vaccines, and nutrition and now that shit is getting enforced at the end of a barrel. In fact a fuck load of that shit (philosophy, bad data gathering, fallacious rhetoric, just being fucking WRONG) gets to just hang around for no good reason besides having a bigger stick. By definition that's not been persuasive to me.

  • I see your point there, absolutely. My point is that the abandonment of the women who did survive to continue what they do today because of the perception of them is a very sad thing. The hostile environments are another sad thing. What's more, who better to enlighten us about the horrible circumstances than the women victimized by it? In that sense I wouldn't have called it a natural, structural tension - you'd have to be wielding their identity cynically to conflate their existence with the circumstances being good enough as they were.

  • But when it comes to representation, I think the most heartbreaking thing that comes to mind is this Twitter post bemoaning a programmer who was feminine with colored hair working at Bethesda if memory serves. She was revealed to be integral to much of the "golden age" work in Oblivion+Skyrim. I'm paraphrasing because I forget, but essentially she was THERE WHEN IT WHAT "JUST WHITE MEN". For me the frustration is coming from the erasure and making light of people who always liked games.

    The obsession with race/sex is exhausting. Shit is like Garchomp in OU - you need to have it or you need something to address it. I want to know if you're indie, if you've branched off of a big company, or if you're taking responsibility in a big company. I want to know if you come from gaming or if you come from capitalist entertainment money siphoning land. Maybe that makes me blind to prejudice, but when the product is a game I just want the game to be good and tell a story and I think an avant garde perspective is an advantage when it comes to that.
