  • She's also incredibly funny (and sometimes savage) which also gets lost in many adaptations, since it's in her commentary and not necessarily in the dialog.

    She was not a woman of many words; for, unlike people in general, she proportioned them to the number of her ideas.

    I don't see how that contradicts what I said? I talked about the pressure many people feel, not just women.

    But most of the hatred I see online comes up when it's a woman. Do you have any examples of men receiving the kind of attention and hatred that Kate Beckinsale or Ariana Grande recently received for their changed looks? Maybe I'm just in my bubble and missed them.

  • I know this is not what people want to hear, but at least one aspect of it is misogyny.

    There was this recent clip of Kate Beckinsale going around and people went batshit over how she had ruined her beautiful looks. The thing is, she definitely had things done before, just go look up pictures of her when she started her career. She was beautiful even then but in a more "normal" way. And no one was outraged or concerned for her then. But now she dares to not be as beautiful as she was before. People have a right to see her be hot!

    Don't get me wrong, I wish there wasn't such a pressure for people to look perfect and have work done. But I think a huge part of the outrage is actually men feeling that they have a right to decide how a woman should look.

  • So... The name Doppelbock comes from Bockbier which is derived from the town Einbeck where it originated. The town's name likely comes from a dialect version of "ein Bach" (a brook).

    The best feminine name would therefore be Doppel-

    <feminine noun meaning something like brook>

    . But alas there are very few feminine German words relating to bodies of water. Best I can come up with is Doppelquelle (Quelle means spring), but that sounds like sparkling water.

    Der Hauptgrund für ein Drittel zu Hälfte wird aber wahrscheinlich eher sein, dass es einfach mehr Autos pro Person gibt oder? Ich weiß, dass es bei uns 2008 noch Lücken zwischen den parkenden Autos gab, jetzt muss man durch den ganzen Ort auf der Gegenspur.

  • Ideas for computer challenges for a 7yo

  • I'm not exactly young anymore and things have sure changed a lot since I learned my way around a computer. But here are the things I remember being fun for me back then:

    • Drawing around in paint (you already have that covered)
    • Creating presentations. Maybe like: Make a presentation about your favourite topic. This might involve collecting pictures either from the internet or getting them from a camera / phone on the laptop.
    • Playing some games (in my case pinball, but that's definitely not very up to date). You can learn quite a bit about clicking through menus etc from playing games.

    Something else that would be important to learn early is created folders and keeping some sort of system with your files. I struggle to come up with a fun way to teach that though. Maybe someone else has a good idea?

  • Ich als Frau liebe Nachtspaziergänge und es macht mich so unendlich traurig, dass ich nicht einfach spontan alleine loslaufen kann, ohne die ganze Zeit innerlich angespannt zu sein. Zur Zeit ist es wieder schlimmer, weil mir vor ein paar Wochen ein Auto hinterher gefahren ist (wollten mich nur aus dem Auto raus anbellen, super witzige Aktion, war es absolut wert mit Todesangst einzujagen).

    Ich frage mich immer, wie frei sich das wohl anfühlt.

  • I know that I grew up in a very privileged bubble and I get that not everyone is in a position to financially support their children through university (the inadequate support through Bafög, mentioned in other comments here, in Germany is a whole other topic).

    My point is more that almost every family I know, even the less privileged ones, did what they could to help their children. Even if there is not much you can give that's the complete opposite of cutting them off as soon as they finish school.

  • Ich bin in den 90ern geboren und musste mit der Zeit erkennen, dass die Mehrheit meiner Altersgenossen mindestens einmal in ihrem Leben von ihren Eltern geschlagen wurden, einige regelmäßig. Diese Erkenntnis schockiert mich bis heute, weil sowas in meiner Familie unvorstellbar war und ich mit der absoluten Gewissheit aufgewachsen bin, dass das normal ist.

  • Agreed, I don't know what the other commenter is talking about. Apparently we live in completely different bubbles. In my experience, it's the norm to receive at least some support by the parents through university or young adulthood. Not only that, parents are legally required to support their children until they have finished their education, which includes university or vocational training (it's a bit more complicated than that, age plays a role and whether you drop out and start again, but the point still stands).

    Many people I know lived with their parents, temporarily or completely, well after 20. Some got cars from their family, some got furniture or appliances.

  • Enjoy my late teenage years and early twenties without crippling self-doubts and lack of confidence. God, those years could have been so damn great if I hadn't stood in my own way so much. To have thirties' confidence with teenage and twenties' opportunities and freedoms...

  • Not faking reactions or emotions. That doesn't necessarily mean showing every emotion you have in it's full force. Just to not pretend to have different emotions than you actually have.

    And yes, that means people can be genuine assholes.

  • I was going to say I have picked up wasp-swarmed fruit (pears, apples, plums) for 25 years and have only been stung by a wasp once – when I stepped on it barefoot. But I realised wasps are probably not the same wasps everywhere and I live on another continent than OP and maybe you.
