  • I meant we could occupy them like we occupied Iraq. We would win the military confrontation. The occupation would break us.

We could do it once, maybe twice or three times if the countries are small and weak, but it would break us. The rest of the world would adjust. We would all be poorer but the US would be fucked. Trump doesn't understand that we built a military too expensive to actually use. It made sense if we wanted to avoid conflict, and casualties, while still being top dog and getting our way, but actually going in and occupying territory is medieval thinking.

  • He backed off Greenland. Taiwan would be an order of magnitude worse. The US could occupy any country on earth (maybe not China, without some Roman level war crimes) But it would be the end of us.

  • "Jesus was probably cool, but nobody gives a fuck about him."

Around here, if I meet someone that talks about God, then maybe they are cool. Maybe not, but they are probably the normal amount of religious. If they talk about Jesus, they are hundred percent batshit. They think trans people and gay people are the same thing, and both are a threat to children, unlike their pastor, who is not allowed to let children sit on his lap anymore because he fell to temptation that one (4!) time(s!).

  • Forty white horses on a red hill, first they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.

    J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit.

    Tolkien thought it was champ.

  • I think the antichrist looks like Peter Theil, and shares a name with him. He's hiding in plain sight.

  • Exactly. A lot of getting good at something is practicing. No one wants to spend time doing something they suck at, especially in public, but rather than practice in private, we can try to trick ourselves into believing we are actually already talented, faking it to get the practice that is needed to build the skill.

This might also help with mild imposter syndrome.

  • That's the thing, they might retreat for an election cycle, but the propaganda network will have people voting for trumpists in the one after that.

People will get tired of guilt and they will band together re elect trump apologists. The next generation raised on stories of how great trump was will likely be even more dangerous. Trump is a fool and a megalomaniac, a slightly more competent trumpist with most of the charisma could show up any day after he is gone.

  • Perhaps we are operating on different definitions.

I would not disagree that America is a de facto oligarchy. It remains a de jure democracy.

  • Because the writers of the first law did not care about whether it made any difference.

  • Do you think the votes are rigged?

Do you think laws can't be passed? Did the deep state create Obamacare and pretend it was Obama and the Democrats?

What about the chips act? The inflation reduction act? Are they pretending to pass laws?

  • Your optimism far exceeds mine.

  • The law says there needs to be an election so an election was held.

  • It's not that all laws have to be constitutional amendments, but our constitution is so long and detailed and a lot of things were written into it to make them hard to change later, so way more laws have to be constitutional amendments than would be in other states.

  • Texas likes small government so much our state legislature is a part time job.

  • He was outspent 10 to 1 so if aipac is funding him they are doing a shit job of it.

  • Do you think we live in a democracy or a dictatorship?

Can the tories stop labor in great Britain?

Can the conservatives in Canada stop the liberals right now?

What do you expect from the party we DIDN'T VOTE FOR?

  • Is that Jaheira? I mean, she would say that.

  • Hard disagree. Their base will believe anything.

If we set up gas chambers in Florida some people would be insisting they were harmless showers while they were being forced into them.

  • Yep, there is no organization capable of staging armed opposition to the government. A series of mass shootings and maybe some explosives is all we are going to get.

Given the number of incidents, I wouldn't be shocked if historians decide later we are already living through it. Political assasinations in Minnesota, the attempted murder of pelosi's husband, attempted trump shooter, charkie Kirk, the car bomb in Memphis that didn't go off a few years ago. The United Healthcare CEO hit. Attempted kidnapping of Gretchen Whitmer.

There is plenty of violence to go around, but nothing that would rise to civil war.

I have imagined a scenario where a debt crisis degrades the capacity of the federal government and polarization leaves citizens and national guard more loyal to their state than the federal government, but we are a long way away from that.
