  • I don’t really have close family, and he’s the one friend to reach out to me during my depressive phases and actually care about how I’m feeling. His whole family really, they’ll ask for updates on how I’m doing and I’m sure they’d help with anything if I asked. He’s such a good guy, I’ll put up with a lot from him.

Every once in a while we’ll stumble into a really good conversation and have a blast, but yeah, most of the time it feels like forcing a conversation with my Dad or something.

  • I doubt the argument would work in reverse. Especially with someone heavily vilified, like Stalin.

  • People talk about what they know, rich people are just living in a different bubble so the disconnect to regular folks is bigly. I’m sure this lady thinks she’s endlessly charming and entertaining.

I have a friend like this, he’s pretty well off and his only real hobby is traveling and his leisure time is spent going to bars and restaurants. So our conversations basically revolve around talking about him and his spouse’s last vacation. I can’t afford vacations or eating out so I can’t contribute at all, nor would I really want to, and when I turn the topic to my hobbies and interests the conversation peters out because unlike me he can’t even fain the interest in a conversation to keep it going.

So our weekly conversations are boring af for me because it’s just listening to him talk about some new Peruvian restaurant he went to, we talk about his last trip to Peru, I yap for a bit about potatoes, bring up a knitting project I’m working on, and then the conversation is over. I definitely commiserate with your spouse, lol.

I wonder if posh people are so used to talking to service workers and underlings who are required by their job to please them, that they have no idea how fucking boring they are.

I definitely think so. Charitably, they’re trying to make connections with others in their social circle through common shared interests, but they live in a such a different world, oblivious to how most live, that it comes across as very disconnected. Even commiserating about problems ends up being two folks talking over each other. I have no reference frame to care about some small mishap getting your fancy car detailed, and he has no frame of reference for my frustration with having to air up my slowly leaking tire every day before driving to work because the leak can’t be patched and I can’t afford a new tire.

  • Ahm … let me get this right for you: It USED TO BE illegal. Became perfectly legal and normal on Jan 20, 2025. This completely out-of-control Project 25 ppl won‘t stop until they have everybody under control like ppl in North Korea are kept hostages by THEIR own deadly regime. Good luck, America.

Don’t worry, Americas best minds are on it

  • Those are both good points! I didn’t spend much at REI last year, some new hiking shoes and I think a jacket, but my REI return thingy was enough for another pair of socks!

  • It’s something we joke about on hexbear, and here they are earnestly saying it.

  • And no mention ever of how horrid trans rights are in the UK especially and the west writ large. Whataboutism and all that

  • I’ll throw out the volcano too. They’re pricy new, especially the newer digital one, but I got mine used and it’s gotta be almost 10 years old now still going strong

  • A few years ago we got some quotes for our roof from a few different outfits, the average was something like 6-10k for shingles and then it jumped to like 20k minimum for any kind of metal roof. I was all about getting a metal roof before I saw how much more the quotes were. I’m still hoping we can swing it when the time comes though, I really want to listen to rain on a metal roof again.

  • Darn Tough socks, but I can’t spend almost 20 for a pair of socks anymore.

I’ve had the same Honda Accord for 10 years, just regular oil changes and it’s going strong, should be just about to roll over 100,000 miles this year.

Redback Boots out of Australia make some really durable steel toe slip ons, I’ve had this pair for 6 years no issues.

For coffee I’ve been using the same Aeropress with the Fellow Prismo attachment (to use it as a french press) and a basic Harrio burr grinder. My wife likes drip coffee and it’s outlasted 2 of her drip machines.

  • I’ve played 600+ hours of Baldurs Gate 3 across multiple characters, never finished it. Played well over a thousand hours of BG2 and BG1 combined, only finished them each once. I agree completion isn’t the best metric, but also even for narrative games. Not everyone plays them the same and even the completion rating for games like that is really small.

  • Absolutely, way more birds than when we first moved in. Luckily there’s established trees in our yard too, and I’ve noticed a bigger variety of birds lately after we started planting wildflower patches in our vegetable beds too. I think they like the insects we get in our yard as well thanks to all the different plants

As a bonus, the neighbors have given up complaining at us about it, lol

  • Pretty much any sport is going to run the gamut from reactionary to prole, no? Soccer is very prole, any group of folks can kick an improvised object around. On the other end you have fucking FIFA, the definition of reactionary.

  • Same, and also butterflies for us! We decided to let dandelions run wild, and before this I had no idea that they could grow like 6+ feet tall, or that butterflies absolutely love them.

  • Guy has never heard of the labor theory of value, that’s embarrassing.

  • I guess I’ve never been on a vacation. Most I’ve ever had off work in a row is ~1 week and that was both tough to arrange and wiped out my PTO days.

  • Instant is never on these, that must make me a lib

  • Lmao, I’m sure the Bush School did a very serious and thorough investigation

Research into North Korea will always lack the exact data that would allow for complete certainty.

    Very serious

  • Could be rage bait for Karma farming or something like that

Edit: Idk, snooped their account cause I’m bored at work, allegedly they quit teaching just to complain and argue with people about being an uber driver on reddit. Probably just an asshole who fell for the rage bait and posted it to the teaching sub. Looks like a local ranting spot for them; I, the sophisticate, use the general mega for that
