  • Yeah he's got many such bangers, I feel like I've learned a lot about the situation in Kenya from watching a few hours of Ogada's videos, especially about capitalist environmentalism and the real effects of imperialism on periphery countries.

  • Fair enough, I appreciate it, you're good, I'm a bit defensive from past experience but you're right, it's important to actually examine these things so we can learn from them.

Actually it's probably obvious where my biases land on this split but even so, I don't really enjoy the dancing on Trotsky's grave partly because the assassination method is so violent and somewhat grotesque and I can't really turn off my empathy even with my understanding of what the opposition was up to, but also that we're approaching a hundred years since this happened and I think with some hindsight the tragedy is that things got to that point between former comrades. There were real, legitimate practical and theoretical disagreements between them but a lot of the conflict also stemmed from egos that just could not back down. You've posted some material that I haven't read yet so I'll have to take the time to study the context when I have more capacity to do so, but I promise I will do so.

  • Trotsky has done more for Communism than anybody on this website regardless if you want to want to play word games or not.

Not sure I really have the energy or patience right now for this form of "good faith," sorry.

  • If Trotsky was able to defend the Soviet Union at a time when Stalin was actively collaborating with Hitler, there is absolutely no excuse for any self-described Communist on this site to say, for any reason, that this man was counter-revolutionary or a wrecker.

Then if one rejects this ridiculous premise, as there is reason to, then there will continue to be excuses valid reasons to say those things about Trotsky.

  • One problem I've been having is that the complete picture in the form of primary source documents is just not easily available in English if at all, I mean, most of the writings people refer to, (even the ones authored by Stalin, Trotsky, and their contemporaries) are reliant on references to meeting minutes and that sort of thing, which are not readily available if you don't know Russian and don't have direct access to all the different archives. I've been thinking of making some posts asking if anyone knows where to dredge up those documents, such as the central committee meetings from 1920-1921 on the trade union debates, for example.

  • Love 2 work backwards from conclusions

These experiences have reinforced that yeah, two people can read the exact same primary documents and still come to opposite conclusions. It's why it's always important to perceive and understand one's own biases.

  • I'm not suggesting any action or anything, just for your own safety, are you able to acquire a gun and ammo, or some other form of lethal defense?

Edit: sorry, I just read your other reply, that really sucks. Not that potentially getting in an armed turf war is much better.

  • As I said, there is plenty of evidence, you can keep baselessly dismissing all of it and I could keep bringing more for you to dismiss, it's an endless slog that I think neither of us is interested in.

This has been my experience arguing for months with a Trotskyist

He's decent in other contexts so I'm trying not to hate but man, what disastrous takes lol

  • Ugh.. those orientalist quotes about Georgians and Stalin remind me of this ridiculous argument I got in where a trotskyist I know tried to argue that Trotsky wasn't being racist there actually, because he was arguing against Reclus' idea that Stalin had all those qualities which are common to Georgians. Like, hello???

  • bbbbbbbbbuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmppppp

  • Masking still protects you, it's a matter of risk management, if wearing a mask for one hour in a public indoor space reduces the risk of transmission either way then it shouldn't even be a question. Those arguments that masking doesn't help you / only protects others, etc are just bizarre and contradict evidence and common sense. And yes I wish the people around me would see it that way and start masking again, I've admittedly capitulated on arguing with people over this but I won't capitulate on protecting myself and the most vulnerable people in my community. If you're getting bullied and harassed over masking then I'm truly sorry and that's fucked up, especially in a hospital. No one questioned it when I worked at a transit hub, a hospital should be a no-brainer.

  • Along with a bunch of other leftist books, I read Newton's Revolutionary Suicide in the midst of when libs were rolling back precautions. And the stark difference in mindset between what it takes do the things the Black Panthers were doing and the Back to Normal arguments really highlighted this. The absolute surrender in their "endemic" rhetoric contrasted to reading about the struggles of actual revolutionaries was just

and I should get around to reading that one, from the sounds of it.

  • I don't know but I'm getting fed up with it, especially the insinuation that it's some kind of trauma or anxiety response. No, if someone tries to paint you with that brush just because you put on a mask to go to the supermarket, that's a reflection of them and their unprocessed anxiety and trauma over COVID, which I'm not judging except when they try to make that my problem. I don't even think twice about masking at this point, it's just PPE, like putting a seatbelt when you get in a car, I just put the mask on when I go to the store, class, or work. There's no debate, I just do it. It's not a big deal until someone makes it a big deal, and for some reason I've caught more of than in the past couple months than in the entire preceding five years.

  • I feel you, it's better to not be a sucker. Well, I should probably call it a day, it's been nice chatting with you, take care

  • Though probably none of that will happen

Yeah I guess that's why I'm still posting about it long after my first comment at breakfast time, lmao. I don't expect anything to really change except for we get the emoji and some more people get banned for not enjoying the site properly.

Which, I gotta say, banning people for breaking the "enjoyment of the site" rules is BS. It's so patronizing, who are they to determine who's enjoying themselves the right way or not? Personally I enjoy fighting crackerdom, and it just so happens that the crackerdom is coming from inside the house. My blood pressure has been even keel all day, except for a very brief spike of anxiety whenever I see this guy post. Demod Nakoichi

  • yup, it's that self-assuredness, lack of self-awareness, and the obvious lack of emotional control, plus the two-faced progression:

    In this thread https://hexbear.net/post/5878074/6419306

Why should I engage in any faith good or bad when they accused me of "white pearl clutching" when I told them that Zionism isn't about Jewish supremacy it is about white supremacy

    and:

This is literally anti-Semitic. It isn't "Jewish exceptionalism" it's just white supremacy. ... You are stepping into actually anti-semitic territory with this and proving why we don't have that emoji.

They repeatedly used the phrase "Jewish exceptionalism" and accused me of "white pearl clutching" when I pointed out that it was actually white supremacy that drives Zionism

(Notice the subtle equivocation) Then in the referendum thread https://hexbear.net/comment/6423603:

I DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE EMOJI.

Well which one is it? If he'd actually listened to the arguments in the first thread instead of having a meltdown then he would have skipped the steps where he accidentally parrotted Zionist talking points only to walk it all back later.,

Aside, he owes Aradino a real apology, not this:

And I applaud that as someone that has also contributed what little of my time I can spare to various causes against colonialism including practically all my meager inheritance

—after making this egregious comment and then getting a reality check from Aradino: https://hexbear.net/comment/6420296

He should not be banned imo, but definitely demodded and made to self-crit, I think it would be good for him

  • wellp, our star mod weighed in on the referendum thread and predictably his ultimate word was a variant of "fuck off, fuck you, fuck fuck fuck," denying any wrongdoing, pouting, and then leaving. Personally I don't think anyone who tells a regular user to kill themself should be a mod on this site, regardless of how annoying they might find them.

  • Both more principled, and less hostile

good points, no hard feelings on disagreements here, more power to you

  • The reason I've leapt to Z's defense is that Nakoichi's treatment of them and the other posters agreeing with them was so egregious that it really looks like a biased application of moderating privileges to force an opinion that, it turns out, is actually very unpopular especially in context, plus the clear examples of microaggressions that several other users have noticed and commented on already. But I'll admit I'm not as up on site lore as other people, so I might have a less pointed opinion on Z than other users, so maybe I'm wrong about them as an individual. With respect to the flag emoji, this seems like one of those instances where someone had to rock the boat in order to get it moving again, and in all appearances it seemed that Z was being punished for being that person.
