Hi, I'm also Terencio on mastodon.social and Sergio on piefed.social. I mostly use this account to make posts that are easier here.

  • Subscribed!

First off all, take a look at !fedigrow@lemmy.zip, it's a place where people who do this kind of thing talk about it.

Second of all, that's a great question and something that we ask ourselves a lot. There are a couple different approaches.

    • just ask people to join in on posting. Sure, make a "meta" post, but also dm people who reply or ask them in comments (so others can see as well)
    • have "events". Like there's one now on !fullmoviesonyoutube@piefed.social related to Halloween movies, where anyone else is welcome to join in. On !sumo@lemmy.world , which will probably always be niche, I just make a post at the beginning of the bimonthly tourneys telling people how to follow the tourney, and I say I'll only be posting 3 more times over 15 days and they're welcome to also post if they want.
    • queue up several posts at once and schedule them to be posted later. You can do this in piefed or there was some other service for lemmy I think, or just write them out in a text file. On !juggalos@lemmy.world I have weekly posts queued up for the next month. Say something like "here's my weekly post! feel free to make your own!"

    Hope that helps!

  • oh yeah I forgor to say that one thing that made this worthwhile was that Lise Myhre's drawings are outstanding, simple yet clearly demonstrating her abundant expertise as an artist. I just checked out this post on a cellphone Lemmy client and the vertical format really emphasizes the excellence of the artwork.

  • That's cool, these posts usually get at least a dozen upvotes. Watch parties are the only thing I use Mastodon for, and they're hella fun. If anyone's not familiar, here's the simple walkthrough:

on Oct 12 9pm Eastern US time, open two web browser windows:

and see people talk about the movie that we're all watching at the same time. I'm "Terencio" there btw.

There are other ways to watch the movie, but the nice thing about miru-miyaku is that after the main movie, it usually streams a related movie that a bunch of die-hards stick around for. This Sunday the second movie is MR. VAMPIRE (1985) which I gather is a

Hong Kong comedy horror film ... The vampire of the film is based on the jiangshi, the hopping corpses of Chinese folklore (similar to both zombies and vampires).

  • Aw geez Luara, you messed up and wore your boot on your hand again. That's what happens when you hook it up to your... er... phone-calculator-object.

An interesting label, looks like it's run by one guy out of Switzerland. A lot of the commenters on his videos seem to be bots (recent accounts with numbers in their names and no other content, making bland brief supportive comments.) I wonder if he's able to pull much of a profit off this.

The music's not bad per se... a little suprised that the voice is kinda vocaloid-like, since natural singing voices can be reliably generated. Ian Bogost had a nice piece in The Atlantic recently about how AI generated songs can be useful just to fill the silence.

"The band’s tracks were not satisfying in any way, but they were apt. I was on the road, but I could be anywhere—awaiting a Pilates class, paying for deli meat, scrolling through internet memes—and the sound would hit the mark. ... As I drove and the music played, I felt nothing—but I felt that nothing with increasing acuteness. I was neither moved nor sad nor pensive, just aware of the fact that my body and mind exist in a tenuous zizz somewhere between life, death, and computers. This is second-order music listening, in which you experience the idea of listening to music. What better band to provide that service than one that doesn’t even exist?"

I kinda like dark ambient to fill that role, but maybe some people need lyrics. Anyway I don't think it's "experienc[ing] the idea of listening to music" like Bogost says, it's more like the other end of the spectrum from ceremonial music: not music that is holy or unholy, but that is completely unimportant, only one level up from the damping signals of noise-cancelling headphones. For example, I was at my aunt's house the other day and she was watching commercials, and there was this car commercial that used a New Order song... and like why use New Order? It's not like anyone's gonna buy a car just bc they heard a New Order song. Why not just generate something instead? You just need SOMETHING.

  • I got kinda interested in that t-shirt logo and did a bunch of searches but came up mostly empty. knowyourmeme thinks this pic might have originally come from an awkwardfamilyphotos web site, and someone's selling clothes with that logo on it on redbubble but dunno if that's the original.

  • I really like Slayer's "God Hates Us All" album, but nothing else I've heard from them has gripped me in the same way. It's good stuff, I just don't like it enough to listen to it more than once. Yes, I've listened to Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss.

  • OOOH! I have a reaction meme for you:

  • That scene is hilarious. "I've sized you up! I've stripped you down! I don't like what I see!" -Charlie, to a bunch of highschool kids.

Unfortunately that episode isn't on a lot of platforms bc one of the other storylines involves blackface.

  • I would totally hang with this person. We could go to Insane Clown Posse and aggrotech shows. They'd fit in at most metal and punk shows too, come to think of it. Dunno if I'd turn my back on em tho.

  • And it will now be three weeks of daily Dracula action.

oh wow I don't have time to read today's entry. But I do have time to make a meme!
