Super interesting. Didn’t know that. Thanks.

Sure but calling them Americans is likely, mostly, sorta true but also ignores an important fact… They were Europeans (or near descendants of) calling the places that. Often a place was named that place because it reminded them of home / to honor their parents home.
Some other notable examples: New Zealand
São Carlos, Brazil
Munich, Saskatchewan
Liverpool, New South Wales
Nueva York, Colombia
Country dependant. Some places it’s highly common some with up to 50/50 split, where I am 2% pay out to the kitchen is typical / required, other places it is illegal as management to even ask the server to split tips.
I’ve worked as a chef many places.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Plant-Based Mince Now 29% Cheaper Than Beef at Tesco as Meat Prices Climb41·2 months agoI can chime in here (I work in plant based meat). It should be but it’s not. Why… Lots of reasons. But basicly it’s split between animal based meat is artificially cheap and plant based meat costs a lot to make. A lot of the costs (for the good brands) are in the flavorings.

They are eating donkeys now in Argentina and marketing it as beef is getting expensive
Chubut producer Julio Cittadini’s “Burros Patagones” project began commercial sales of donkey meat in April at 7,500 pesos per kilogram, compared to approximately 18,564 pesos per kilogram for beef — roughly 40% of the bovine price.
With beef prices hitting 25,000 pesos, the legalization of donkey slaughter reveals the rawest side of the Casa Rosada’s fiscal adjustment.

1·2 months agoChillll… Its just donkey meat and the internet. The government does in fact talk about it. They publish reports about animal meat production and consumption like every nation. It’s part of their annual reports that prove a point that I really don’t care about at all. If you want to say they only eat cow in Argentina because you know best and no one can use internet sources to prove you wrong… Fine. Great. I don’t know what to say. You won this internet battle! Yay!

11·2 months agoUhhhh… I have been to Argentina. I was there a long time. Can’t say I saw donkey meat. Also doesn’t mean it is not there, or eaten. All I can do it tell you what the Argentinien government has to say about it.
Unfortunately as I apparently can’t research it online… And I live in Germany… I can’t fulfill your request as it would require me to go to Argentina to satisfy some dude on reddit. Sorry dude? Don’t know what you want.

51·2 months agoThis is usually the case. There seems to be a nugget of truth in it, but articles always make it seem larger than life. Horse mule and donkey meat consumption is in fact up. Is it significant - no. Is it common, also no. Is it a THING? Na, no it’s not a thing. It’s simply slightly higher than it was before but still very rare.
It doesn’t make sense for it to be a common thing as there simply is not enough donkeys in the country, even if you were to slaughter them all for it is be common. Apparently there is 59k donkeys and 50,920,790 cows in Argentina. There seems to be a 7-16% increase in the slaughter of donkeys for meat although this number seems to be in question. It apparently is a third the cost of cow meat.

3·2 months agoI’m not in the UK but in Germany. That seems low and Germans are cheap AF. I usually expect things to be more expensive there. I don’t know about Googles overview, but this is what Google has to say.
The average price of beef in the UK varies significantly by cut, with current retail prices for primary cuts typically ranging between £9.00 and £19.00 per kg. As of April 2026, retail beef prices have seen a sharp increase of approximately 16.4% year-on-year due to supply shortages
The average price of ground beef (mince) in the UK has risen significantly, with retail prices typically ranging from £6.18 to £11.00 per kg as of April 2026

9·3 months agoYes. Thank you. When I was a bee keeper I learned some about the things. Do honey bees have various issues and struggles … Sure. Are the large varieties of native wild bees soooo much more fucked - yep. Yes they are.
Tuna was not always popular and when people didn’t know what it was it helped people know what they are buying. The US also having a large portion of bilingual people with a Spanish base, this helps it not get confused with cactus fruit (apparently tuna in Spanish)

You’re speaking purely political voting when you say there is no mechanism to change this. That is intentional. As is the hope it will change sometime soon politically. Hope like winning the lotto is important. It keeps the peasants from rising up.
People have been in simular or worse situations all throughout history with no mechanisms to change it and they changed it. They are very few and we are many. They don’t stand a chance. I’ve been waiting my whole life with the same hope of political change just around the corner that never comes. In my 40 years here it has only gotten worse.
Every one of these people have cooks and gardeners and house staff. This change isn’t difficult but it does take a spine to do it and to care more about the common good than your life and freedom.
