Yeah this is BS. They had one the best Linux contributers in their corner developing his LXC for Canonical but even he eventually was tired if their shenanigans and re-invented LXD in the new and improved incus.
I've tried Ubuntu a couple times in the past 5 years and it's the sone of same type of frustrations I had with Windows.

Vim, neoVim and emacs. Lean to use in combination with other tools like tmux and you have an excellent working environment. These are tools that are contributed to by the best of the best OGs out there.
You're doing fine. I built a couple social media type sites in raw PHP over 15 years ago. They never went anywhere but they did help get my foot in the door at a couple dev shops back in the day.
Years later I rewrote them in codeigniter. So that's about all the advice I can give because I'm certain that my sites had security holes in them too.
