  • Audiobooks have been an amazing hack for me to stay focused on every day household tasks. Listening to an interesting book engages my upper level thoughts (monkey mind) and makes things like folding laundry or dishes much more engaging. I still have a tendency to just fuck off when it's half done but I can keep in motion and stay in the groove and circle around again after doing other necessities.

Simply the act of writing something down, with an actual pen on actual paper, really does help with memory. I know it's a really common thing to suggest, especially in school and classes but I completely skipped it then and only started doing this in the past decade so it's new to me. I've noticed such a dramatic difference in my recall of things that I wrote down vs things that were said to me, even if I never look at the notepad again.

Also, I absolutely hate this, but having less free time. I have less free time now than I ever have before and I've been astonished at how much I've been getting done. Every day I have pressure to do as much as I possibly can within a small window of time and it's been great for my ADHD, but I resent it and grumble about it and wish it didn't work so well.

  • Sure they do, all the time, as long as it's an interesting story.

More than half of the books on this list are by "random" ie, non famous people.

  • This exactly. It's an easily recognizable legal shortcut to a bunch of systems, rules and privileges that apply to the situation of two people wanting to live their lives together. Doesn't have to cost much, if anything, and doesn't have to have anything at all to do with religion or rituals. Can be just two people showing up at the town hall if you want it to be.

  • Considering how famously hard to kill werewolves are, it would probably have to be a chocolate wrapped in silver and then eaten with the foil on to do any real harm.

  • Even cellulose and paper bags were tested and had plastics in the glues and binders in the material. Unfortunately you need to look for manufacturers that explicitly say they're plastic-free or buy loose leaf. I have a bunch of bagged tea I bought before I knew, and I've been ripping open the bags and dumping the tea in my infuser.

  • I'm a lifetime Windows user. I used to have to type run win3.exe on my first computer. I installed Linux mint on my new pc build a couple weeks ago and have been moving in and getting everything set up. Some people absolutely will make the change.

  • I've been making the switch on my own new PC, some programs I was concerned about can be run ok through Lutris. It's been an adjustment but no regrets

  • Whatever you want. Find something that brings you joy and try to do more of that. If it's important to you to leave a legacy, try to connect to others and be in their lives. Try to make good, meaningful changes to the world, even if they're small. Our existences are only so long, and worth enjoying.

  • Don't worry you'll reread it again 😋

Part of the pros of it being so long is by the time you're done you can start over again and it feels fresh hahs.

  • My dad likes to tell a story about a time he was riding on a subway car next to a shaggy looking guy with a laptop. My dad looked over and asked "oh, is that Linux?" and the guy replied "it's GNU /Linux, actually" in a really snarky way. My dad snorted and said "who are you, Richard Stallman?" and he said "yes".

  • I recently took up a volunteer position in local government and it was as easy as showing up and being willing to make meetings twice a month. I now have a say in the future of where I live and it's helping me focus on the things I can change.

  • We have solar panels, battery backup and a plug in hybrid car. It gets us just about anywhere locally we need to go without needing gas. We just got a 3d printer and I'm already thinking of dozens of things around the house I can fabricate now. We have a VR I can use to work out downstairs (beat saber!). Not to mention this cool miniature computer with internet access I can use anywhere I go.

Hoping to add a garden in the next year or so to grow herbs, fruits and veggies.

  • Some are but there are nylon teabags and pyramid teabags made with plastic, and apparently even paper teabags often use glues made of plastic. These days you have to specifically seek out a brand that explicitly says they have no plastic in their bags or just buy loose leaf.

  • This absolutely tracks with my experience after having a kid. Suddenly I have little to no time to waste and so every hour I have to myself I feel that urgency and pressure to get as much done as possible. I've never had less free time or been so consistently productive as this last year. I think the demands are not so intense that I'm going to crash, but I do chafe against the limitations. I'm frustrated that I'm unable to excuse the time for my favorite leisure activities, and I miss video games. However I have gotten so many projects done, some things that have been sitting around for years, that I have to give myself a bit of credit for once.

  • You could take on some community volunteer work, get involved with a local group that's doing work that aligns with your values and fill up your schedule with some hard commitments to do something worthwhile. I just volunteered for a committee in my town and it was way easier than I expected to get involved.

  • Haha, that pre-bed burst of energy where you get more done in an hour than you did most of the day, and then get to go lie in bed with your mind racing about everything you were going to do and will definitely do tomorrow instead of sleeping, and then feel guilty for not being able to stick to the schedule people are asking you to and that your life demands, yeah that shit is the best.

  • It's been a struggle all of my life to live on a diurnal schedule, we are the cave guardians

  • I just bought a bunch of onesies and toddler clothes directly from Carter's and the Children's Place. They do seasonal sales and loyalty points so I actually got a better deal than on Amazon. Got the packages within 5 days each. I bought diapers from Target, they came in two days and I got a $20 giftcard as part of the deal. Next time you need something, try going directly to the brand's website, or literally any other retailer. Amazon spams search results but they aren't the only store on the internet.
