  • What portion of that 21% considered illiterate are actually literate, but just not in English. I'm sure there are many who grew up in other countries and moved here but never bothered properly learning English. Like that would be like saying 1 in 5 people cannot use a phone, because surely they have to be able to read to know how to sign in to websites and search things, and I find it hard to believe that many Americans can't use a cell phone

  • Life is truly so unfair when it comes to kids. Like you seem to have thought all this out, and even have blood tests to monitor shit. Then there are people like me who was crossing my fingers praying that I wasn't the tiny percentage that would end up with a pregnancy after even using a condom and/or using other birth control measures. I applaud your efforts, I hope you find everything you wish for when it comes to having children. 17-25 I just remember being worried all the time.

  • it might be in the best interest of the United States (as a citizen myself) to vote that the U.S. become a part of Denmark with a 5-7 year hold on voting rights to any changes to current tax law or healthcare laws. 5-7 years from now hearing you will pay $600/month for healthcare to vote in U.S. conservatives with no actual benefits may teach some people something.

Right now we have sh.itjust.works falling just behind lemmy.org as being the largest supporters of dictatorship. With 0% of lemmy.org so far believing the president of the United States legally cannot convict someone of crimes.

  • When I moved to Tennessee a few years back I looked all over trying to figure out where our gas bill was. Water/electric/sewage/internet, I actually got through one company now which is kinda neat, but our heater is natural gas, and I haven't been billed for it yet, which never makes sense to me. I keep wondering if the management company just covers it or something, but I should see a usage bill I would figure somewhere...

    Small towns don't manage much though. They came by to do an inspection a couple months ago and I was like oh shit, they had not stopped by since I moved in back in 2021. (Guess a new management company absorbed them). I've got a chicken coop and put chicken wire up around about 1,000+ square foot and I was wondering what they were going to say about it. They never ended up even going out back. Next year's problem I guess.

    Should the U.S. say that, no. But by no means has the U.S. stopped trading with China, Spain etc.

  • Alcohol is the same. Something like 6% of cancer deaths are attributed to alcohol. Its easy to make it look bad (and don't get me wrong it is bad). Worldwide something like 80% of liver cancers come from Hepatitis.

    Recent surveys in the U.S. have showed that 5% of parents have skipped hep b vaccines and another 4% have delayed the vaccination for hepatitis B.

    Those aren't directly comparable, but a person could drink every day of their life, and be 13 times less likely to die from liver cancer because a choice their guardian made.
