  • Freetube is great too. Its like newpipe for desktop. Lets you subscribe, have view history, and save playlists locally. Has sponsorblock and dearrow and is accountless.

Sometimes breaks so have to go back to using firefox + ublock while waiting for update tp fix wharever youtube does.

  • Yeah, but having a Google account, tying payment to it, and having viewing history all tied to it is even worse. There's a reason Microsoft wants people to use an account on their OS is tying stuff like extended support to it because a dedicated profile is still more reliable and accurate than trying to rely solely on finger printing.

One is so good you don't even need to try to finger print because you already did all the work for them logging in.

  • I've never tried it but I can see myself being happy with it if beat saber another other games like pistol whip end up being something I use it often for. And I also want to try Half Life Alyx.

  • Another thing is youtube's value isn't even career creators. Its random people uploading stuff because they thought it'd help someone despite no expectations of any career or monetary compensation.

Im sure lot of us have searched some fix on youtube then been helped by the video posted by a channel where that's the only video there. So not everyone is looking for a netflix alternative from youtube, but its the encyclopedia of knowledge it offers. I've had professor who uploaded their lessons on youtube so people could refer to it.

  • Most youtubers I ended up still following have been ones who aren't even trying to make a living off of it and just sharing stuff because it seems cool. Sometimes posting something maybe once a year or going silent for years then popping in with a video.

So kind of like how there isn't really money to be made on lemmy and filled with people shilling stuff or going viral to start gets money off interactions.

There's just a very desperate car sales person vibe to the career youtubers.

  • It also monetarily feed into the youtube network effect of there being no other viable options. Maybe youtube becoming completely unprofitable for creators is a necessary evil so there becomes less and less incentive to put content there.

  • Might be simplest to get the smallest phone you can find for those kind of apps, and then do everything else on grapheneos. Might be hassle carrying two devices but at least one of the phones can be the cheapest thing you can find.

  • But then you end up giving Google even more information compared to using it logged out.

  • One of the reasons stated for disliking AI has been data harvesting and privacy infringement.

Which lot of people are not realizing they are providing on their own and doing a bulk of the invasive AI's job for them from the get go.

I guess look at how you use lemmy. Would you feel comfortable if your username was your name and profile pic your face? Did past you do that on your interactions with the web so people can type in your name and find archives of your contributions as opposed to it being dumb things from a random username? Not that there weren't people who did, but the sentiment of be careful what you share and a more cautious view did appear to be more common compared to now.

So its not so much social media is bad, but the way people choose to use it now days that people don't look deeper into. Kind of like how some people will upload videos of crimes they are doing on social media because of how comfortable they've gotten to treating it like a personal diary.

When I bring up the old internet it's about general approach of what information is provided and given freely by the user as opposed to technical assessment of how secure the old internet was.

  • Ltsc is the better route for those staying on Windows with no Microsoft login being required.

Windows 10 ltsc will get security updates until 2032.

  • Go with Windows 11 ltsc if you won't move to Linux. That way you'll get security fixes but no new AI for a while. Doesn't even come with the Microsoft Store or onedrive, so pretty barebones. It's already stripped down compared to regular Windows people try to debloat then can run into issues with after new updates bring new "features".

If you just want security updates and no new AI stuff go to ltsc.

  • But then again they did also fall into using stuff like tiktok and oversharing on it with their names and faces and installing the app on their phone. Not just tiktok but meta stuff like Instagram or Twitter.

I think best balance was during the phase where usernames were used on message boards and people were wary of sharing more beyond that on the Internet, and mantras like be careful what you share on the Internet was more common.

Now days, people are sharing lot of information that marketers and companies had to work really hard to try to get. Now companies get names, voices, and faces given to them without effort.

It's nice to see the pushback against AI over privacy concerns but I hope it eventually leads to also beginning to see that general usage of social media that has become more common place to freely share everything has the same issues.

  • I'd be interested. I've been reading consistently again.

  • I have two 1440p 27" monitors and I really like the size. They are on monitor arms which do help a lot, since it keeps the monitor floating above the desk so you can have stuff underneat it and easier to keep your desk neat and dust free.

I also pick up a generic used 1440p/120hz 16" monitor for around the cost of a triple a game that I ended up being impressed by. So you could go that route too of having one big 27" monitor and smaller monitor.

  • I like used thinkpad. Was sold after I picked up a t480s for real cheap and impressed by the keyboard on it. Then put Linux on it. So route I'll take going forward is ThinkPads for cheap once warranty ends and businesses start offloading them.

  • There's posts this month, so might be the case if on beehaw.

  • Yeah, our memory prices have been affected too by the stupid AI shit.

  • I thought it was better than passable. It just kind of wandered around for the first few episodes, which they would have been better off not doing to make the most of the few episodes left. But, I loved how theh wrapped it up and then I went and found a fan edit of Andor that edited Rogue One in the style of Andor splitting it into episodes and changing the ost to one less campy sounding to finish it out.

  • I'm so happy I dropped gmail.
