  • 37 was one of my better years. I had disposable income to go do whatever stupid hijinks I could think of. I did start seeing less of my friends who had started families. But I also switched jobs to do new interesting things. We did lots of concerts, community events, I took photography classes. It was great. I enjoyed my thirties.

My forties have been very rough though. And that could just be from coincidence of life events happening. I'm actually looking forward to 50. I am hoping my 50s are like my 30s, just a tad slower. And my friends are coming back on the radar as their kids are leaving for college.

I used to get somewhat concerned about the remaining time I have left, but I must have somehow come to terms with it. I look back on the last 25 years and think of all that has happened. It feels like both just yesterday and "damn, that was forever ago". The next 25 may feel just as long and be just as full. I'm ok with that. I'm just trying to enjoy the ride.

  • Small technical correction:

To DEcrease withholdings (the dollars shown on the Fed line of your paystub)

One must INcrease exemptions claimed on Form W-4

But the rest is correct. If you underwithhold/underpay you risk penalties come April.

However, if you try to claim so many exemptions as to get to zero federal withholdings, employers are required to second-guess you and make you document the exemptions you are claiming (not all will do this but they're required to nonetheless). But if you go to very little federal withholding, just not zero, employers generally don't give a shit and will just make the payroll adjustments accordingly.

  • I just boarded a flight and had a moment where I hoped you were also not at my gate!!

  • Oh lawd Jesus, this probably is the future.

  • It doesn't. The naming and shaming is claimed to be a deterrent. But the juicy gossip is too loved by the law-abiding folk for the elected Sheriff to consider not doing it.

  • 🎶 We'll. Make. Great pets!We'll make great pets! 🎶

  • They were always going to be permanent additions. We have enough room that H.S. could live on another floor. I wouldn't have put her in that situation if we were in a condo. She wasn't restricted; she had free rein of the whole house; the kittens were cloistered to the upstairs via baby gate. And while they were kittens and rambunctious, they were getting put to bed in their own bedroom, not allowed to sleep with us. I.e. the calico would take advantage of that and get her snuggles in at night (as well as on & off throughout the day as we both WFH).

We did become their fosters when they got unfortunately early weaned, as we had put in adoption applications on them when they were 2 weeks. We got them at 5 weeks. I fed them a wet food/formula slurry and monitored their weights, got them that stuffed cat surrogate that has a heartbeat, etc. And basically I hedged and adopted 2 instead of only 1 in case the calico didnt like them, they would have each other.

  • Wait are you coming from PA or DE? Because the Maryland roads near Virginia are god awful. And I mean the little roads as well as the Maryland half of the beltway that seems to always be under construction.

  • Yes indeedy! And to turn on your lights if your wipers are on, and to buckle up, and your speed may be monitored by aircraft. But pay no mind to the aircraft signs. The program ended up being way too expensive and they just never took the signs down. But do watch out for those cut throughs between the trees along the interstates because staties absolutely are hiding in there hoping for easy pickins.

And some have radar detector detectors. Turn your device off if you don't want an extra $100 added to your speeding ticket.

  • I got 2 kittens a few years ago for my calico who liked watching kitten videos on YT. She did NOT like the kittens in person. We addressed her as Hissy Sissy to the kittens. The kittens had been weaned too early (due to their foster mama cat getting kitty flu pretty bad and the rescue had to quarantine her). So the kittens were all about trying to get to know Hissy Sissy. She had had a hard street life before we found her, and didn't trust other animals. I was swerved by her YT habits, but her kitten curiosity didn't extend to in-person kittens. Sadly her kidneys quit on her so I'll never know if she would have eventually warmed up to them.

  • The road surface materials and condition of the road changes.

Some states/towns limit billboards and tall sign poles. And some are very maximalist about it.

  • There is an imbalance here. What would y'all do if you were on your own? Forget appointments and family birthdays? That you were allergic to penicillin and have a screw in your wrist that you need to tell the MRI tech about?

I'd like to make room for dumb movie quotes too, but the only ones that stick are the ones the hubby quotes like his language is based on Darmok at Tenagra.

  • Tree frogs like to hang out on my windows at night (aka the bug buffet). And the cats absolutely love to watch them. If one gets within arm's reach, they will try to swat it, not realizing of course the frog is on the outside.

One time a frog did sneak inside and found out that the air conditioning wasn't worth the death wish.

  • If I'm lucky, something will come along to distract me long enough so that I forget I'm uncomfortable.

  • Truth. They clearly needed a decoy cake. And the real one gets secured in a cabinet or fridge. Preferably behind high security locks.

  • We do love cake in accounting

  • I stopped here last year while road tripping. I was honestly surprised at how many people were there on a weekday in April. It was still hot as balls then too. I ended up mostly sifting at the water troughs because they are under roofs. I think someone did find a diamond that day, but I only came away with about a quart of interesting rocks for my rock tumbler.

If you go, go with someone who would be really into it as well. I dragged my hubby there and he was miserable but tolerated it for a while for my sake.
