  • This hope is what keeps me going

  • I absolutely hate this boring dystopia, but emerging dialects due to a need for humans to sound distinct from bots is probably the coolest idea to come out of it so far. It has great parallels with the American vs. British accent situation too.

  • Yes, a pleb that clicked a link that brought the org to an expensive screeching halt for weeks, would have been fired

  • She did? I thought she was just an off-grid hippie. I didn't find Picard particularly memorable though

  • I've always considered the lack of space drugs to be a network TV concession. Pike uses deadly parsley to cook, I'm sure there are some wild substances you can get on just about any station, and they've probably made it into an art form on Earth

  • According to Data, synthehol's "intoxicating effects can be easily dismissed." (TNG: "Relics")

This is what I always took to be the important part, and why they use it on Starfleet ships, even though normal alcohol is obviously common and enjoyed on Earth. It's a safety concern. Rather than having all your crew rushing to take Sober-Up™ every time there's a red alert, they drink synthehol, because they can shake it off themselves

  • Oh my god, they were roommates

  • So rather than asking them to make it useful, they're asking the companies to make it clearer that it isn't useful

  • Where are you that you could face such a steep punishment? Setting up safe, automatic tormenting is really easy

  • Now that's an unpopular opinion

  • This sounds a lot like problems my fiance and I have had. She's diagnosed, I'm still working on that. She also has OCD. She gets stressed very easily when preparing for a trip, and used to get worse and worse approaching her strict departure time, which has caused some conflict between us, as I am habitually late to things.

We've been able to work it out, by just having a conversation about how we get ready. Now I try harder to hit her target time, and she allows a little wiggle room. It's taken a lot of stress off of us both, making the whole process easier. It's still a chaotic mess, but at least we're not fighting about it anymore lol

  • Oh the irony

  • That's cool. There are some communities like that, like dull men's club. I've not engaged with them much, but they seem like cool places to chat

  • Oh, you're right! I missed it because I thought that paragraph was just talking about Threads more, and skimmed past. Still, a sentence and a half about how they're too clique-y isn't much of a look

  • I prefer sweetening separately, because it allows you to control the sweetness more

  • Here's an article from the IEEE about the issues with AI energy consumption. This article specifies that they're discussing the requirements of LLMs and new generative AI. The article we're commenting under wasn't that cut and dry about it, but a basic understanding of the context of the world should be all a reasonable person needs to figure that out

  • If you want to talk about machine learning in general, that's a different conversation. Like it or not, colloquially, AI is LLMs and chatbots

  • If the next new industry is an energy hungry propaganda machine, yes I will
