It’s definitely changed. Nerds of old were warning others about “walled gardens” long before the internet had mass appeal. Back then there were actual websites with few intrusive scripts, there were journals that you could customize to feel like your own space, services for you to have a personal page, scientists and engineers publishing stuff for free because they felt like it.
Nowadays I only really stick around the fediverse because it retains that old feel, and neocities!
