  • Good, it should be under democratic control, like it was in the New Deal era. The problem isn’t the loss of Wall Street’s power over the Fed, it’s that Trump is in power.

  • Zuck promised flat out that there wouldn’t be any spying or surveillance, ever. That turned out to be a massive lie, of course (just as when Page & Brin told us in 1998 that they believed advertising was incompatible with search), but it was a big part of the draw of the early Facebook that you (seemingly) didn't have to choose between your friends and getting spied on by Rupert Murdoch & Co over at Myspace.

  • Revisionist bullshit. Despite what came later, Facebook was the privacy-respecting alternative to MySpace at the time.

  • Their audiobooks are also DRM-free!

  • That’s not what being a Luddite means

  • Any rumors/thoughts on what the settlement involved?

  • Decolonization and prison abolition aren’t mutually exclusive. Carceral instincts for large populations are especially unhelpful here, as they’re the root of the problem.

  • Why are you dismissing the scapegoat explanation as “cultural”? The capitalist project is essentially to convince the turkeys (the public, or voters in a democracy) to support Thanksgiving dinner (their own exploitation). To do so, they have to convince the public that someone else, and not the capitalist class, is to blame. Immigrants are a favorite target to play this role, with cost of living, low wages, high housing prices, taxes to fund social services, and more being attributed in whole or in part to foreigners or “invaders” whom the capitalist promises to remove in order to supposedly benefit the public economically.

  • What kind of a fucked up world are we living in where IOF snipers are so psychopathic that journalists have to contextualize their statements by explaining how “The need for a dignified funeral for loved ones is a core human instinct, protected in law and explored in art for millennia.”

  • Benn Jordan did exactly this in his recent video on AI police cameras (at the 31:00 mark)

  • Another word for paywalls is chokepoints

  • This is basically all previously released and public domain stuff. They dumped these so that they can point to this and claim they’ve already released them whenever anyone demands they do so in the future.

  • Matt Stoller had a nice writeup recently in his monopoly newsletter BIG about how we got into the current mess. TL;DR: basically financialization (prioritizing stock price over innovation, like at Boeing) and a lack of antitrust enforcement as a previously competitive market got monopolized (see chart below)

  • Never root for a monopoly over at least some semblance of competition

  • Removal of fencing for tribal access was part of the ruling, true, but Friends of the Everglades was the lead plaintiff, and as the linked article makes clear this was an environmental law ruling. Why can’t we just count this a win all around without distorting the facts?

  • What are you talking about? The ruling was based on environmental damage to the Everglades, which is why the other groups were involved.
