From my understanding as someone on Dutasteride & topical Minoxidil, Dutasteride is used to block DHT - the primary cause for androgenic alopecia ("male patterned baldness"). I've been on the combination for around 6 months, and I haven't experienced any changes in hair volume or growth outside of the areas that I had a receding hairline.
TLDR: Dutasteride will help prevent further loss, but won't help regrowth. For regrowth you'll want topical Minoxidil, but it's best when you use both.
