  • Yep, they were so traumatized by losing to Reagan that they abandoned everything they ever stood for and started racing right trying to find the "center" and to this day think it's the only way to win.

  • Not only is it real, I saw a video that his team cut together of the moment like it was a damn Play of the Game highlight of him "owning" the Republicans. Words cannot express the depths of my hatred for Democratic leadership at this moment. This bill is going to be one of if not the most catastrophic pieces of legislation ever passed and THIS is all their so-called "resistance" amounts to?

I hate them and their strategy of "Do nothing, give the Republicans enough rope to hang themselves, then make it the responsibility of the voters to get rid of them so they don't have to promise anything or stand for anything." They gave 'em though rope alright, except they're not hanging themselves, they're diving off a cliff and the rope is tied around our waists too.

  • 1992 when he was an MP according to this article. He's been saying they're only X years/months/weeks away almost as long as I've been alive.

  • B-but, if we stop rewarding seniority and nothing else even if we run terrible losing campaigns... Multiple times in a row... Th-then it'll never be MY turn...

  • Didn't Pelosi say she wasn't going to run for reelection this time around? Or am I mistaking her for one of the other Do-Nothing Democrat Fossils?

  • At a minimum this guy won't have the same level of intuitional clout Pelosi used many many times to hinder progressive policies and engage in political horse trading. So even if this guy is literally a 1-for-1 Pelosi clone he'll be a much weaker hurdle to overcome than she was.

  • Wonder if it's the same Fae I accidentally gave away my attention to.

  • Yes, but keep in mind you have to balance this against not tolerating bad actors who will prey upon your understanding. I've met plenty of "slow and dumb" people who really just have no intention of ever getting it right and make no effort to do so while claiming that they're trying their best. It takes wisdom to recognize the difference.

Some people take baby steps to come to your side, others need to be dragged kicking and screaming to the correct side.

  • I'm right there with ya kid. This adulting shit is not all it's cracked up to be.

  • They might have an induction stove. The community housing project that owns the apartment I rent recently joined this pilot program to switch appliances from gas to electric to see how much it helped air quality and energy use in the home. It used to take me like 3 minutes to boil 2 cups of water on the stove, now that they replaced it with an induction stove it's like 30 seconds. It's amazing.

  • Is it still courage if the reason you're a bottom is because your brain turns to mush and you melt into a puddle of goo when your partner does stuff? Asking for a friend >. >

  • I didn't even notice that when I was writing it I was so mad, lol.

I'm so mad at how feckless these people are. I can empathize with Rep. McBride not wanting her entire existence as a lawmaker to be spent on trans rights. It's exhausting having to constantly justify your existence as a trans person and I imagine doubly so as a lawmaker. But the fact of the matter is that we don't have that option. But the Democrats see the right swaying public opinion with lies and are saying "Welp, guess trans people aren't popular anymore. Time to drop trans people."

  • "Got too far ahead of public opinion" my ass. The right was allowed to lie pervasively about trans people for years with barely any pushback. They were allowed to drag public opinion away from us. What little pushback there was often capitulated to right-wing framing on the subject.

  • To be fair, that's a very hard connection to break because it is just everywhere and still gets repeated as gospel. But it does make a lot of sense when you think about it. There are many more opportunities to identify an internal feeling like one's gender identity than there are for something external like who they may be attracted to.

I myself knew that being a boy felt wrong as early as 10. I'd had some run-ins with that feeling before then because of the way my father treated me. Things like getting berated for being too emotional, and him getting rid of a baby doll that I carried around and took care of when my Mom was doing things for my baby brother that I couldn't help with. With the stated reason that he didn't want me to grow up to be some kind of queer (though the word he used was much worse). But 10 is where I first remember recognizing the feeling of my body being wrong.

Of course I didn't have the words for it at the time so I didn't know what I was experiencing was dysphoria. Nor did i know that nonbinary was even a thing you could be. I understood that trans women existed, but no matter how hard I thought about it over the next few years I didn't feel like a girl either. It took until I was 26 before I finally realized with the benefit of hindsight that I'm nonbinary. So I'd already been forced into a male puberty which hit me like a train. I'm 6'2" (~188cm) and built like a balding fridge in a fursuit. I'm almost 35 now and because of other medical issues I haven't been able to transition so it is very hard to not feel like it's too late for me even though I know it's not. Especially in the current political climate.

  • The big things to remember with this discourse is that one, the regret rates for going through transition are exceedingly low. Like so low it's virtually unheard of for almost any other medical intervention. This heavily implies that not only is the current standard of care very good at weeding out people for whom transition is not the correct treatment, but that it might even be too good and there's a significant cohort of people for whom transition would be the best treatment but they get filtered out because they don't present as being trans enough. Furthermore when you dig deeper into those regret and detransition rates you find that most of the time the reason for detransition was external. Meaning things like can't afford the medication, discrimination, getting kicked out of housing, etc.

The second big thing was already mentioned and it's that there isn't a neutral option. Imagine telling a 13 year old girl "how do you know you're not a boy unless you go on testosterone for a few years?" Just because we're talking about the puberty that they'd naturally go through without intervention doesn't mean that it's good.

But realistically the most any kid younger than ~16 is gonna get when they show up to the gender clinic saying they're trans is therapy, social transition so things like trying out a new name, pronouns, and/or clothes, and at most puberty blockers. Puberty blockers by the way have been proven safe for trans kids since the 90s. Then if they still want to transition they might start HRT after months if not years of this therapy.

  • The overriding principle with TERFs is that they hate men with every fiber of their being. Seriously, that's the gist of it. They see trans women as men who are trying to invade women's spaces for nefarious purposes, and they see trans men as poor brainwashed women that internalized so much misogyny that they deluded themselves into believing they aren't actually women. Nonbinary people just get lumped into whatever box corresponds to their gender assigned at birth.

The irony is that all this trans hate always inevitably blows back on cis women. Cis women like my wife who I cannot tell you how many times she's been harassed in the restroom because she's got broad shoulders, an undercut, and a very Butch Lesbian aesthetic. Or my daughter who when she was around 2 a lady tried to steal a baby doll that we were going to buy her while loudly proclaiming that she should be the one to buy it because her daughter (emphasis hers) really wanted a baby doll and there were none left. This lady straight up thought we had twin boys but we just let one of them wear a dress because my daughter wanted her hair cut like her Mommy and had a really short undercut.

  • Can't wait to see what kind of "evidence" they've put together. Cuz it really felt like from that indictment they were charging him with "human trafficking" for being the one driving himself and some undocumented coworkers to a job site.

  • It makes perfect sense. They prey on poor people to fill out that "voluntary" recruitment. When you've been poor all your life and suddenly you get that signing bonus no matter how responsible you are there's no way you're not going to buy something at least a little fun for yourself. You've likely had a shitty car all your life if you had one at all. You put all that together and it's really easy to see why so many of them do it.
