  • It's true, and not really a mystery. Having spent a few decades living through frozen winters in the upper midwest, it's like this: Sometimes you'll unexpectedly really, really need a neighbor. And the same is true for your neighbors, so folks tend to become neighborly.

  • That's a well-written explanation, thank you, and it's the Trump administration's game plan on everything.

    Pick a policy, any policy, from DOGE to tariffs to blocking funding on a whim, whatever — it's illegal, unconstitutional, or both, but that doesn't matter. If a court blocks them, it'll take months and they'll appeal.

    Meanwhile the daily damage is done, and it's permanent. If/when Democrats are again in charge, being Democrats, they'll tinker with the mechanisms a little and pose for smiling pictures, but we'll never see US AID again, and ICE's ginormous budgets will be the norm, etc.

  • Dems lost in 2024 because Kamala Harris reached out to Republicans and ignored the left, and because the primary theme of her campaign was "Things are pretty good," when things were not. Sexism was a very minor part of the end result.

  • I always appreciate a valid worry, thanks, especially one that hadn't occurred to me. Here's hoping the list is well-hidden and encrypted.

    On a vaguely related worry, there are near-daily anti-Trump protests in any American city, and I frequently attend, but the organizers always ask for on-line RSVPs — putting everyone who replies into an easily-subpoenaed database. I never reply, and recommend simply showing up (preferably without a cell phone in your pocket).
