  • But that's the strength of society to begin with, no one person knows how any given complex system works because its impossible for one person to know, we come together in specialised groups to create these systems over time with the collective knoweldge of many people.

  • 'Nuclear takes too long to build' has been an argument against nuclear for several times longer than it takes to build even the most stringently safe nuclear power plant... its depressing.

  • Except I can percieve a curve to the horizon, then walk to the point that was previously horizon and percieve that curve continues, thus drawing the conclusion that the curve must continue all the way round.

  • I can see it, not through being overthrown but by immense incompitence as its run by people who are so detatched that they don't even really understand where food comes from and so up their own asses that they genuinely believe chat GPT can perform complex real world tasks.

  • Wasn't it recently proven that the metals introduced into the upper atmosphere by satellites burning up depletes ozone? Its not a problem yet but maintaining constellations on the scale of cumulative several gigawatts of data centre would leave several tons of satellite burning up every single day. CFC Ozone hole is gonna look like a cloudy day in comparison.

  • In a sane world centre would be 'status quo making decisions based on objective reality' yet somehow even the idea that we should base our decisions on verifiable data is like super extreme gay communism left by current standards.

  • Don't forget they will keep prices high so this is essentialy a double win for them.

  • The positive is that lasers are undodgable by any means other than random jinking at distances where the light travel delay is significant which can force your enemy to waste all their fuel or die.

  • Dependso n the area, in remote areas amazon can be WAY cheaper so long as you pass the free shipping threshold even if the items themselves are more expensive.

  • Hell no, that setup describes nazi germany too depending on the ideology. You'd live in permament fear of accidentally breaking some rule you didn't even know about or that the regime came up with yesterday.

  • To be fair on those:

    • Most people can't afford to move so if you live in the desert then you're stuck in the desert even if the living cost would be lower somewhere else post initial moving cost, doubly so if its the only place near your job.
    • No the car lobby and US city design did.
    • No yeh fuck these people
    • Doubly fuck these people.
  • The shadowrun 5e rulebook actually allows someone to live in a small one bedroom appartment on a part time job, we are so far past what used to be considered dystopia.

  • Honestly kind of huge? 3D printing can allow for really complex geometries that just can't be practically produced via other methods which could result in more efficient motors or designs with new and desireable torque curves.

  • The idea is there is no difference, if its a copy they are both validly you. Or to put it another way there is nothing to transfer beyond the data.

  • I'd argue that the Trumps implication that the US can disable many of these weapons remotely is already a perfectly valid free market reason to not buy them, I mean who wants a back door built into your self defence apparatus?

  • The idea is that your conciousness isn't magical or special or something that needs to jump anywhere, I save a game, I turn off my pc for a few million years, move the save file to a different computer, start it up and the game continues.

  • Well if you're just data all someone would need to do is re-create that data within some unknown (but presumably within the range of what gets inflicted by head trauma) error margin. Depending on how the universe works that could inevitably happen someday if it goes on forever (along with shakespear), alternatively some future civilization might run an ancestor simulation or maybe they just have an immense quantity of resources and decide to try and simulate every possible human conciousness.

All of these are highly unlikely or far future but you don't have to experience the intervening time.

  • From the reviews I saw it didn't help that starfield looked and played like a skyrim sci-fi mod that leaned into the Bethesda loading screen meme on purpose.

  • "We are 20 years away from Fusion if we get X amount of money"– Scientists right before recieving less than 1% of X amount of money.
