  • When a State actually takes care of it's citizens, it becomes a better place to live and start businesses. That attracts and creates better educated and more affluent people, which makes it a better place to live and do business. People flee the poorer states for a better chance at success in the liberal state. Repeat this for a century or so and that's how conservative states become shitholes and liberal states (and countries) are much better off.

  • I've definitely seen "median trees" and "sidewalk trees" here in Atlanta get removed or replaced after a car hits them. But for sure, large trees can easily shrug off a car crash. Those are just not usually in heavily urban areas like these tanks are meant for.

    Not that it is super relevant to this discussion, but last month someone with a chainsaw cut down multiple (I wanna say a dozen or so) trees along a street in Atlanta in the middle of the night. Who TF would do that?!?! Sad and pointless....

  • Dumb take. If someone crashes their car into one of these, it can be replaced in a few days. Trees take decades to grow in ideal conditions. Between tall buildings in a city is far from ideal conditions.

    Also algae is way more efficient at converting CO2 into O2; I think it's maybe multiple times more efficient using the same amount of light.

    But even just one billion is more than a whole family could spend in multiple lifetimes!

    The difference between a million and a billion dollars is basically a billion dollars, while at the same time a million dollars is more wealth than a VERY large majority of Americans will ever see.

  • I've found the opposite to be the case unfortunately. Plex "just works" while my jellyfin server had almost constant issues with subtitles (two of my frequent users need these because of hearing problems) and would frequently crash requiring docker restarts.

    I adopted jellyfin very early, used it for many (maybe 6?) years and these problems only got worse over time.

    I always prefer open source (often to a fault) but I am glad I switched to Plex a few months ago. I got the lifetime pass for cheap for black Friday. I still leave jellyfin running for a few users, but everyone else has already switched over.

  • All my gear is stuff I've saved from the dumpster at work except my hard drives and my UPS. I'm using the IKEA end tables instead of racks (I think they are called lakka?). My jbod chassis is huge and very loud, but it was free. I dropped cables into my basement and I only hear it when I'm down there.

    I started off with just a desktop tower full of spare parts, but over time it's slowly become a pretty impressive stack.
