  • Filling up an 18 wheeler can cost $1000. I don’t think the truck stops are using our piddly $150 car-side gas pump limits for the diesel pumps on the truck side.

Filling up my gas motor home at regular car gas station pumps all over, I find that Truck stops, big chain gas stations, little podunk gas stains in the middle of nowhere all use limits from $100-$200, which is not enough for me to fill up. My guess is that number used to be “safely big enough to fill up anything” and they haven’t adjusted it as the gas prices went up.

  • $150 sounds about normal. I put gas into a motor home with an 85 gallon tank. Generally the pumps will cut off once or even twice before the tank is full — sometimes at $100, sometimes at $125, sometimes at $150

They don’t actually charge the extra, so once get over the initial shock of thinking you got stolen from, this is not a real problem (unless you’re running your card right up to the ragged edge of your credit limit.)

  • Naomi Kritzer has written a few really good short stories on this topic that are kind useful reflections on how life could look if AI exists and isn’t controlled by narcissistic billionaires:

    Better Living Through Algorithms

“Prophet of the Roads,” Infinity’s End — no link to read the story online but 100% worth looking up

    Cat Pictures Please

  • I liked it and I’m sad it’s gone. So there.

    I also liked the books.

  • Edit: removed long comment as not very helpful for OP

  • Insert Sartre joke serious philosophical statement here

“I’m sorry, we’re out of cream. Would you like your coffee with no milk, instead?”

  • Nobody’s fucking raw pasta, mate

  • Mark Twain talks about tipping over outhouse and other pranks as the main activity on Halloween. So I guess if we assume he’s an honest narrator of his time (definitely in doubt..) then trick or treating is a mass extortion

  • I'm probably the only Fediverse user who sees your thorns and thinks, "No actually do that more,"

No, ðere are two of us.

  • If they were hoarding cats, or rusty cars, or old refrigerators, or piles of scrap metal, etc., the authorities would intervene, and get them help for their mental illness.

    This is a common misconception.

“The authorities” (USA viewpoint) are really extremely unlikely to intervene in any way at all with hoarding, and even more extremely unlikely to provide any kind of useful mental health intervention.

If the hoarding is causing a public safety hazard then the authorities may eventually start fining the hoarder until they do whatever is minimally required to clear the hazard.

Much much more likely, if the hoarder is renting, the landlord may evict them which is one of the many paths to homelessness.

But by far the most common outcome is that the authorities do nothing whatsoever to stop or help with harmful hoarding behavior.

In this way, crazy aunt Florence and Elon Musk are similar.

  • From the article:

we do not claim it is true

That’s some hard-hitting journalism right there

  • The output would be a string containing the proof, which a deterministic, non-LLM proof-checker could decide whether it’s correct or not.

This part seems like an optimistic statement. Do we have LLMs outputting proofs in a consistently correct format that prof checkers can accept?

  • They make those, that’s totally a thing. Even, when my grandmother moved into a retirement condo the stove there didn’t even have a setting for “stay on” — you had to set a timer to turn it in at all.

All it takes is great gobs of money to buy a new one.

  • No. Very pleased to have all my bits.

  • They are taking the piss, this is not a real word people would say in German.

  • Somebody ID this car for me? Make, model, and approximate year? I really want to know.

    I’m thinking maybe 1982 Lincoln??

  • Power of attorney really does not help at all.

Power of attorney is granted to allow you to do stuff they want for them as if you were them. It does not allow you to override their clearly-expressed will.

To override their will you would need a guardianship which (at least in the US) you are not going to get until they are quite far gone with dementia.

TL;DR at least in the USA your parents have a legally-protected right to be as stupid as they want and you can’t use the legal system to stop them
