  • There is really no risk here in Germany, the retirement saving contracts here are forced to guarantee their payout. The stock options just simply offer more payout. It's not just a stock portfolio that you pay into yourself and withdraw yourself, like is maybe common in the US or other places.

    But yes of course all of it is learnable by yourself. But if you honestly have the money to save for retirement, then your money is better spent letting a professional (not working on commission) handle it.

  • You've not offended anyone. Your feelings are valid. Humans are capable of terrible things, but on the whole, we live in an extremely peaceful society. There's luckily so much more humans who do amazing things than terrible, unfortunately a few who do terrible is all it takes for the feeling of safety to crumble.

    Even the majority of Germans who let national socialism happen aren't all terrible. The absolute majority of them were just scared and ignorant and had a feeling of helplessness which is why they let it happen, but the actual agreement and horrible things were done by a minority of people. Same in other areas today where terrible things are happening.

  • There were a few attacks by angry people. But who says that in Germany "a whole lot more" hasn't happened? People are losing their jobs, capitalism is massively extracting people's wealth, enshittification everywhere. "A whole lot more" than one incident is currently happening.

    All I'm doing is staying realistic. You saying "one incident is all it takes" is not literally true. It's an exaggeration, not an entirely untrue one, but still.

  • You don't have to save anything. If pensions are not enough to live (which they won't be if you don't save anything yourself) you can get social security for the rest. Obviously you will be poor.

    The public retirement system will send you a letter each year telling you how much it will pay out if you keep paying like you are currently. Then just see if that is enough for you and if not, do something privately.

    When you have more than enough money, and want to do something privately, just do yourself a favor and go pay an investment advisor (not working off commission). Never just "save something" in your bank account or whatever, always invest in the stock market into index funds. IMO, if you currently can't afford an investment advisor, then you also shouldn't save for retirement. Just enjoy the money you have now and live off social security when you're old.

  • Just remember that the talking to this guy is not for the guy, but for the people reading your conversation. When I joined the internet, these kind of exchanges made me understand human behavior, see how to properly reason, and they still provide important information. This exchange was useful to me.

    1. Go to https://moryconvert.com/en/youtube-channel-id (or any other tool like this) and find the channel ID of the channel you want to watch
    2. It should have the form "UC................", replace the C with a U
    3. Put the channel ID with a U instead of the C at the end of this URL: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list\<channel_id>

    Example:

    https://www.youtube.com/@uThermal has the ID UC--TKxqP8xJNymgrLe-thhA so after replacing the C to U that leads to the URL https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UU--TKxqP8xJNymgrLe-thhA

  • That's true, but I definitely use fish as my default shell and when it runs a script without shebang it automatically runs it with bash. Thus I assume that's the fish default to make your scripts work.

  • You don't even need a proper shebang. Scripts without shebang are executed in bash by fish.
